The Attempts to Restore

Before attempting to restore we must have the right mindset/heart about discipline.
Hebrews 12:1–14 KJV 1900
Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds. Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin. And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. Discipline in the bible is a positive thing.
God Himself disciplines you in order to restore you. During our time of history this is a difficult concept. We are allowed to pick and choose what sin/world atrocities we riot over. But God’s desire is that each of us deal with the sin within first.
Matthew 7:5 KJV 1900
Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.
Among weak believers there is an overemphasizing of supposed sins. It is ironic that those that would try and control what people do, eat, or celebrate do so by telling others they are weak.
Make sure what you are offended in is actually an offence to God. Otherwise you are the one in the wrong.

Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations. For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs. Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him.

Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances, (Touch not; taste not; handle not; Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men? Go privately to the individual with the right heart. Do not let emotions dictate the truth. Let the truth dictate the emotions.
Galatians 6:1–3 KJV 1900
Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.
Go to a few individuals that are known for thinking/praying before acting. People who will investigate and hold all parties accountable to Biblical standards, not man made doctrines.
Then the church gets involved and when a group of people that have a heart for God and a love for people start praying and influencing, lives change.

But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession, And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles’ feet. But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God. I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not. Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church.
The abuse of discipline is reprehensible and destructive, but not more than the abandonment of discipline. Two generations ago the churches were applying discipline in a vindictive and arbitrary fashion that justly brought it into disrepute; today the pendulum has swung to the other extreme—discipline is almost wholly neglected. It is time for a new generation of pastors to restore this important function of the church to its rightful significance and place in church life.- H. E. Church discipline is considered “anti-evangelical” today, but history shows that the churches that consistently perform church discipline rapidly grow in numerical size.

The Poor Results of Not Seeking Restoration

What happened to church discipline? There is no clear answer to that question. But there is evidence to suggest that the church stopped focusing on the healthy spiritual growth of church members and started to focus more on social order. This lead to large tent meetings that would see people profess Christ but not followup with their spiritual growth. Billy Sunday, Billy Graham, and others focused on the Gospel message but not the life after the Gospel.
Large door to door campaigns became the norm but slowly became a way to add numbers to a score card rather than adding numbers to heaven or participating in the even harder work of biblical counseling to see the Gospel radically transform broken lives after salvation.
We have examples of this in the Scripture with Philip the evangelist and the Ethiopian eunuch. But this is not the norm, rather it is an exception to the rule. Philip like Paul and the other disciples would often spend years teaching the individuals that came to Christ. This is the Biblical pattern.

A false compassion for the person in sin
A false sense of glorifying God as a congregation
The church becomes nothing more than a positive leadership concert
The corporate witness of the church is compromised
