Notes & Transcripts

Workers at the Champaign County Library were just a little surprised when a book entitled, “The Real Book About Snakes” was returned anonymously. According to library officials the book was due back on July 17, 1972, but had been missing for the last 41 years. Along with the book, the library received an anonymous note along with a full payment of the overdue fines due. The note apologized for keeping the book for so long, stating that the person was a slow reader. They enclosed a fine of $299.30, which amounted to 2 cents a day for the 41 years. The library says the fine was paid in cash, and a spokesman used the occasion to remind others with books they need to return, “It’s never too late to return those overdue items.”
