INVITE TO READING PLAN (show pic)
COMMISSIONED TIMOTHY AND DENISE DAVIS AS INTERIM PASTORS TODAY (show pic)
We just came out of Christmas. Shopping for family and friends, the exchange of gifts, cooking and gathering.
It’s a season of celebration and giving.
2 Corinthians 9:7 (NLT)
7 You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.”
There are restaurants adopting that principle. They ask you to give to children hospitals or other non-profits and if you do they ring a bell and everyone cheers.
Paul reminded us of the Lord’s words: “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
Acts 20:35 (NLT)
35 And I have been a constant example of how you can help those in need by working hard. You should remember the words of the Lord Jesus: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”
To kids, it’s more blessed to receive than to give…
Little kids are bred with selfish “Mine-isms” Mine, mine. They don’t want it until another kid wants it.
Christmas, I didn’t many gifts, my sister did. Then they said go downstairs…motorcycle.
Our dogs don’t want their food until the other dogs begins to eat theirs
We have a tendency to hold on, to want, to never be satisfied.
We need understand that the things we have are not ours anyways. We are only stewards of our possessions
As we get older you begin to experience the joy of giving. I HOPE ANYWAY.
Christians should take joy in giving.
Giving to help a family in need
Giving to orphans or widows
Giving to advance the kingdom of God
We should give because HE GAVE…He gave to bring eternal life! The best gift anyone could receive
Here at NLF one of our core values is finances…
We teach…
Biblical Tithing (10%)
Offerings, Kingdom Builders (planned giving, locally, globally and for the future)
Godly Stewardship Of What We Have Been Given (the remaining and the majority left over)
1 out of 10 verses in the Bible deal with money
December 10 we were on this topic of stewardship……

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT TITHING?

Genesis 14:18–20 NLT
18 And Melchizedek, the king of Salem and a priest of God Most High, brought Abram some bread and wine. 19 Melchizedek blessed Abram with this blessing: “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. 20 And blessed be God Most High, who has defeated your enemies for you.” Then Abram gave Melchizedek a tenth of all the goods he had recovered.

The Tithe existed 500 years before it became a Law

It was a biblical principle that came through Abraham, our spiritual father.
Melchizedek was probably Jesus himself (Hebrews 5:8-10) he had no parents etc.)
Genesis 28:21–22 NLT
21 and if I return safely to my father’s home, then the Lord will certainly be my God. 22 And this memorial pillar I have set up will become a place for worshiping God, and I will present to God a tenth of everything he gives me.”

Jacob also gave a tithe before the Law was established.

Genesis 31:15–16 NLT
15 He has reduced our rights to those of foreign women. And after he sold us, he wasted the money you paid him for us. 16 All the wealth God has given you from our father legally belongs to us and our children. So go ahead and do whatever God has told you.”

Laban mismanaged money and as a result God blessed Jacob, a tither and good steward

‭Rachael and Leah seen the mismanagement
Leviticus 27:30–34 NLT
30 “One tenth of the produce of the land, whether grain from the fields or fruit from the trees, belongs to the Lord and must be set apart to him as holy. 31 If you want to buy back the Lord’s tenth of the grain or fruit, you must pay its value, plus 20 percent. 32 Count off every tenth animal from your herds and flocks and set them apart for the Lord as holy. 33 You may not pick and choose between good and bad animals, and you may not substitute one for another. But if you do exchange one animal for another, then both the original animal and its substitute will be considered holy and cannot be bought back.” 34 These are the commands that the Lord gave through Moses on Mount Sinai for the Israelites.

The Tithe is 10% of your income.

Tithing means a tenth
Numbers 18:26 NLT
26 “Give these instructions to the Levites: When you receive from the people of Israel the tithes I have assigned as your allotment, give a tenth of the tithes you receive—a tithe of the tithe—to the Lord as a sacred offering.
Nehemiah 10:35–37 NLT
35 “We promise to bring the first part of every harvest to the Lord’s Temple year after year—whether it be a crop from the soil or from our fruit trees. 36 We agree to give God our oldest sons and the firstborn of all our herds and flocks, as prescribed in the Law. We will present them to the priests who minister in the Temple of our God. 37 We will store the produce in the storerooms of the Temple of our God. We will bring the best of our flour and other grain offerings, the best of our fruit, and the best of our new wine and olive oil. And we promise to bring to the Levites a tenth of everything our land produces, for it is the Levites who collect the tithes in all our rural towns.
Proverbs 3:9 NLT
9 Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce.
Malachi 3:8–12 NLT
8 “Should people cheat God? Yet you have cheated me! “But you ask, ‘What do you mean? When did we ever cheat you?’ “You have cheated me of the tithes and offerings due to me. 9 You are under a curse, for your whole nation has been cheating me. 10 Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, “I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put me to the test! 11 Your crops will be abundant, for I will guard them from insects and disease. Your grapes will not fall from the vine before they are ripe,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. 12 “Then all nations will call you blessed, for your land will be such a delight,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

The Tithe is Holy unto the Lord.

Let’s look at the NT
Matthew 5:17–19 NLT
17 “Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose. 18 I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not even the smallest detail of God’s law will disappear until its purpose is achieved. 19 So if you ignore the least commandment and teach others to do the same, you will be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. But anyone who obeys God’s laws and teaches them will be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Under the new covenant, Jesus did not come to eradicate the law, but to fulfill it .

Matthew 6:20–21 (NLT)
20 Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal.
21 Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.

Tithing teaches us to Treasure God.

It becomes a matter of priority
Matthew 23:23 (NLT)
23 “What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your herb gardens, but you ignore the more important aspects of the law—justice, mercy, and faith. You should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more important things.

Tithing is a matter of the heart.

Mark 12:41–44 NLT
41 Jesus sat down near the collection box in the Temple and watched as the crowds dropped in their money. Many rich people put in large amounts. 42 Then a poor widow came and dropped in two small coins. 43 Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has given more than all the others who are making contributions. 44 For they gave a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she had to live on.”

TITHING IS A TEST

Test of surrender
Test of obedience
Test of priority
Tithing means a tenth &
The number ten in the Bible represents testing

TITHING:
1. Positions us to receive financial and material blessings both on earth and in heaven. Luke 5:1-8
2. Guards our hearts and lives from greed.
3. Advances the gospel like nothing else.
