Daniel’s Determination

Luke 9 51
before we look at Luke this morning we are going to Daniel
Daniel 1:8 LSB
But Daniel set in his heart that he would not defile himself with the king’s choice food or with the wine which he drank; so he sought permission from the commander of the officials that he might not defile himself.
Daniel coming into Babylon in captivity
Daniel coming fro Israel where there was Godlessness from the king on down
but Daniel had a Godly teacher
and when he came into the Satanic worship empire. he set his mind to be Godly
no matter the outcome- that He did not know
Daniel 1:9 LSB
Now God granted Daniel lovingkindness and compassion before the commander of the officials,
Daniel 1:10 LSB
and the commander of the officials said to Daniel, “I am afraid of my lord the king, who has appointed your food and your drink; for why should he see your faces looking more haggard than the youths who are your own age? Then you would make me forfeit my head to the king.”
instead of just refusing to eat he gave an alternative
Daniel determined to do right
God gave him wisdom and friendship of the official
in Daniel 3 Nebuchadnezzar set up the statue
every one was to bow down to it
Daniel 3:16–18 LSB
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego answered and said to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to respond to you with an answer concerning this matter. “If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to save us from the furnace of blazing fire; and He will save us out of your hand, O king. “But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we are not going to serve your gods, and we will not worship the golden image that you have set up.”
These 3 were determined not to bow no matter what
Luke 9 51.

The Approaching Days

V 51
Taken up / ascended
Jesus’ days were short
he had a mission to accomplish
This verse is a transition from showing the world who He was
the work in Galilee is over
the destiny of the cross and the fulfilment of His mission
the mission would no be accomplished till He ascended to Heaven
the mission is to instruct the disciples
die for the sins of His people
to be lifted up
John 3:14–15 LSB
“And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life.
rise again as the first fruits of those who will follow
go to thew Fathers house and prepare a place for us
it was approximately 6 months away
his focus has changed
the Father is directing Him to Jerusalem
where the execution will take place
Jesus knows the physical pain He will endure
Jesus knows the separation from the Father that will take place on the cross
Jesus knows the desertion of His disciples
the rejection of Peter
the betrayal of Judas

He set His Face

V 51
Jesus was determined
Isaiah 50:4–7 (LSB)
Lord Yahweh has given Me the tongue of disciples, That I may know how to sustain the weary one with a word. He awakens Me morning by morning; He awakens My ear to listen as a disciple. Lord Yahweh has opened My ear; And I did not rebel Nor did I turn back.
I gave My back to those who strike Me, And My cheeks to those who pluck out the beard; I did not hide My face from dishonor and spitting. Even now Lord Yahweh helps Me, Therefore, I am not dishonored; Therefore, I have set My face like flint, And I know that I will not be ashamed.
set his face like flint
trusting in The Father
we saw the determination of Daniel and his friends
We see here the complete submission to the Father
there was nothing that would stop him
Jesus is determined to glorify the Father with the accomplishment of His mission
The Love for the Father
the trust He has in the father
Our trust and love for the Father
our trust and love for Jesus
should compel us to be determined to set our face to accomplish the mission that the Father has set before us
our determination should be like the Daniel and his friends
we have come into a world that being a Christian is more difficult
to compromise our integrity
to compromise our standards
we are called to be a light in a dark world
a city on a hill
But when we do we will receive opposition
V 52-53
rejection
the 3 would never had reached Nebuchadnezzar if they would have blended in with the crowd
Daniel 3:28–30 (LSB)
Nebuchadnezzar answered and said, “Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, who has sent His angel and saved His servants who put their trust in Him, violating the king’s word, and gave up their bodies so as not to serve and not to worship any god except their own God.
“Therefore I make a decree that any people, nation, or tongue that says anything offensive against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego shall be torn limb from limb and their houses reduced to a rubbish heap, inasmuch as there is no other god who is able to deliver in this way.” Then the king caused Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego to succeed in the province of Babylon.
