We looked last week at Haggai. He was a seasoned man of God. His age, maturity, and message from God was used to bring “ENTHUSIASM” back to the people of Israel as they were now starting over back in their land.
Alongside of this man of God was a younger counterpart, filled also with this enthusiasm and one God would use to relay His messages to the people as well. His name is Zechariah.
A common name in Israel meaning “Remembered by God
God would use this man to remind the people that He had not forgotten them!
God has remembered His covenant with His people
God uses this man to relay His message of all He plans to do for His people Israel, but begins by offering a stern warning from the past… Zechariah 1:2-6 gives this warning and reminds them and assures them His Word is true and faithful!
Zechariah 1:2–6 NASB95
“The Lord was very angry with your fathers. “Therefore say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, “Return to Me,” declares the Lord of hosts, “that I may return to you,” says the Lord of hosts. “Do not be like your fathers, to whom the former prophets proclaimed, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, “Return now from your evil ways and from your evil deeds.” ’ But they did not listen or give heed to Me,” declares the Lord. “Your fathers, where are they? And the prophets, do they live forever? “But did not My words and My statutes, which I commanded My servants the prophets, overtake your fathers? Then they repented and said, ‘As the Lord of hosts purposed to do to us in accordance with our ways and our deeds, so He has dealt with us.’ ” ’ ”
God uses this young man to convey his message that:
They are to have a perspective of looking ahead… future mindset.
They are not only PREPARING a temple (A BUILDING)… they are PREPARING something even greater:
PREPARING to Worship God Almighty
There is a PREPARATION for future generations
A PREPARATION for the coming Messiah!
Zechariah is one of those books that can be quickly overlooked yet it is so fascinating...
It is the longest of the “Minor Prophets”
Second only to Isaiah pertaining to Messianic Prophecy
The Gospels quote Zechariah more than any other prophet!!!
Zechariah’s message is an encouraging one for the most part as He conveys God’s message of mercy and hope…he receives them through some interesting communication with the Lord.

Now the town of Bethel had sent Sharezer and Regemmelech and their men to seek the favor of the Lord, speaking to the priests who belong to the house of the Lord of hosts, and to the prophets, saying, “Shall I weep in the fifth month and abstain, as I have done these many years?” Then the word of the Lord of hosts came to me, saying,

Zechariah 8:6–8 NASB95
“Thus says the Lord of hosts, ‘If it is too difficult in the sight of the remnant of this people in those days, will it also be too difficult in My sight?’ declares the Lord of hosts. “Thus says the Lord of hosts, ‘Behold, I am going to save My people from the land of the east and from the land of the west; and I will bring them back and they will live in the midst of Jerusalem; and they shall be My people, and I will be their God in truth and righteousness.’

Peoples hearts will one day from all over seek the Lord! Zechariah 8:19-22
Zechariah 8:19–22 NASB95
“Thus says the Lord of hosts, ‘The fast of the fourth, the fast of the fifth, the fast of the seventh and the fast of the tenth months will become joy, gladness, and cheerful feasts for the house of Judah; so love truth and peace.’ “Thus says the Lord of hosts, ‘It will yet be that peoples will come, even the inhabitants of many cities. ‘The inhabitants of one will go to another, saying, “Let us go at once to entreat the favor of the Lord, and to seek the Lord of hosts; I will also go.” ‘So many peoples and mighty nations will come to seek the Lord of hosts in Jerusalem and to entreat the favor of the Lord.’
The message climaxes in chapters 9-14 as we see God focus the people’s attention to His COMING promise…

2 Comings

The scarlet thread we have been seeing throughout the Old Testament jumps off the pages in Zechariah!!! God is wanting the world… His people… to PREPARE for His Son Coming!!!
The Rejected Messiah… is how His first coming is depicted in chapters 9-11
Humble and meek… riding a donkey (Symbol of Peace)
The Reigning Messiah!!!… it is glorious to see the HOPE, and discover the POWER of the Messiah as King in Chapters 12-14

Christ is ALL OVER in Zechariah! The declaration of the Messiah abound!!!

Christ is portrayed in His two advents as both Servant and King, Man and God.
Here are just a few explicit references to Christ in this book of prophecy:
The angel of the Lord (3:1–2)
the righteous Branch (3:8; 6:12–13)
the stone with seven eyes (3:9)
the King-Priest (6:13)
the humble King (9:9–10)
the cornerstone (10:4)
the good Shepherd who is rejected and sold for thirty shekels of silver, the price of a slave (11:4–13)
the pierced One (12:10)
the cleansing fountain (13:1)
the smitten Shepherd who is abandoned (13:7)
the coming Judge and righteous King (Chapter 14)
Holman states this book of Zechariah “shows what God can accomplish through individuals committed to obedience. These exemplary persons are Zechariah the prophet, Joshua the priest (3:1–10), and Zerubbabel the governor (4:6–10). These men foreshadow the coming of the Messiah, the greatest Prophet, Priest, and King.” B&H Editorial Staff. (2012). Holman Illustrated Bible Handbook (p. 293). Holman Bible Publishers.

How Do We Prepare?

God remembers His Word… do we? Do we know His Word? Do we care about His Word?
God was faithful the first time… He will be faithful again!
We need to PREPARE our hearts...

As we PREPARE the next generation!
We need to get out of our temporal way of thinking… Eternity is long!
As we PREPARE to remember...
Salvation has come and it came to ALL PEOPLE!

Prepare for His Table

As we come to the Lord’s Table
The Bread… His sacrifice remembered
The Cup… His Covering and price paid appreciated
