Jews presentation of Jesus

Jesus arrested brought to Annas and Caiaphas (Jn18:24)
Peter had denied Christ as predicted (Jn18:17, 25, 27)
Jesus stood before Annas (Jn18:19) then sent to Caiaphas (Jn18:24)
From there Jesus was taken and presented to Pilate (Jn18:28-32)
Pilate contemplates the charges and returns to question Jesus directly (Jn18:33-34)
That is where we ended last week when the real exchange is about to start, but may we back up just to keep the flow?

The Text plus some

John 18:33–34 NASB95
33 Therefore Pilate entered again into the Praetorium, and summoned Jesus and said to Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” 34 Jesus answered, “Are you saying this on your own initiative, or did others tell you about Me?”
John 18:35–36 NASB95
35 Pilate answered, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests delivered You to me; what have You done?” 36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not of this realm.”
John 18:37–38 NASB95
37 Therefore Pilate said to Him, “So You are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” 38 Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews and said to them, “I find no guilt in Him.
John 18:39–40 NASB95
39 “But you have a custom that I release someone for you at the Passover; do you wish then that I release for you the King of the Jews?” 40 So they cried out again, saying, “Not this Man, but Barabbas.” Now Barabbas was a robber.
Last week we saw Pilate had interacted with the Jesus, contemplates the charges, and then returns toe the Praetorium and called for the accused (Jesus) to be brought to him (Jn18:33)
He asked the first question, are you the king of the Jews?
Jesus response is what we closed out with, so let’s press on.
Any general observations in (Jn18:35-40)?
What fact does Pilate state to Jesus along with his next question (v.35)?
Jesus gives a very important statement about His kingdom, what is it (v.36)?
Look closely (v.37), what is the purpose of Jesus coming into the world, for having been born?
What was Pilate’s judgment (drawn conclusion) of Jesus (v.38)?
Pilate offers the release of Jesus (v.39) but the people want release of who (v.40)?

What have you done?

John 18:35 GNB
35 Pilate replied, “Do you think I am a Jew? It was your own people and the chief priests who handed you over to me. What have you done?”
Pilate responding to Jesus question shows the disdain the Roman’s had for the Jews, can you feel the sarcasm?
Pilate is saying he is not there because he arrested Him, His own people did it, so that leads to the next question.
What have you done? Stop for a minute, think about how Jesus could have answered the question but did not. What things had Jesus done?
I was born of a virgin (miracle)
I have lived without sin (against God or man)
I have healed the faithless and faithful, calmed the storm, gave sight to the blind, walked on water, fed the masses, defeated demons, and if that were not enough, raised the dead.
What have I done? I came to save the world!
He came to serve not be served, to give his life as a ransom, One sacrifice for the many.
McClaren: “Strange to ask a prisoner what he had done! It had been well for Pilate if he had held fast by that question, and based his judgment resolutely on its answer?

So, are You a king?

John 18:36–37 NLT
36 Jesus answered, “My Kingdom is not an earthly kingdom. If it were, my followers would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish leaders. But my Kingdom is not of this world.” 37 Pilate said, “So you are a king?” Jesus responded, “You say I am a king. Actually, I was born and came into the world to testify to the truth. All who love the truth recognize that what I say is true.”
Jesus explains the nature of His kingdom - Not of this world (realm)
Jesus presents proof - My servants would have been fighting
Jesus gives His purpose - testify to truth
Courson in short says “Yep Pilate, you are right, I am!”
Jesus in his answer assures Pilate he is not a political threat to him, for His kingdom is not of this world, not of this realm
Tenney in his commentary says this:
Augustine observed from this verse that earthly kingdoms are based on force, pride, the love of human praise, the desire for domination, and self interest — all displayed by Pilate and the Roman Empire. The heavenly kingdom, exemplified by Jesus and the cross is based on love, sacrifice, humility, and righteousness — and is to the Jews a stumbling block, and to the Gentiles foolishness (1Cor1:23).
I have been born - displays Jesus humanity
I have come - shows Jesus divinity
Came, for He was from the beginning and created all things (Jn1:9-10)
Came that the world maybe saved through Him (Jn3:16-19)
Came as light so not to walk in darkness (Jn12:46)
I have come to testify truth!
Jesus told Pilate the origin of His kingdom and to explain His ministry, to testify truth

So, what is truth?

John 18:38 GNB
38 “And what is truth?” Pilate asked. Then Pilate went back outside to the people and said to them, “I cannot find any reason to condemn him.
The Jews wanted Jesus condemned, put to death (Jn18:31)
John 18:31 NASB95
31 So Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves, and judge Him according to your law.” The Jews said to him, “We are not permitted to put anyone to death,”
Pilate asks the question about truth; whether in truth or in jest he asks the question.
Roman and Greek philosophers had discussed and debated this very question and come to no settled conclusion according to Wiersbe who quoted some other source.
Pilate’s conclusion, judgment was “I find no guilt in Him.”
Morris said this: “It was a way of dismissing the subject. Pilate has learned what he wants to know. Jesus is no revolutionary. He represents no danger to the state. He may be safely released, and indeed He ought in common justice to be released.”
Pilate not saying just not guilty of something to bring death but not guilty of anything, no guilt at all.

Pilates solution, Jews rejection

John 18:39–40 NLT
39 But you have a custom of asking me to release one prisoner each year at Passover. Would you like me to release this ‘King of the Jews’?” 40 But they shouted back, “No! Not this man. We want Barabbas!” (Barabbas was a revolutionary.)
Need to give something here, the origin of the release is only mentioned one time in historical writings by Josephus, and this is highly debated by historians and commentators. Nonetheless, it is scripture and we must look at it as it is.
Pilate offers the release of Jesus to the Jews
The Jews reject that offer and request Barabbas the insurrectionist, robber as some versions say.
Turn with me for more details to
Matthew 27:12–13 NASB95
12 And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He did not answer. 13 Then Pilate said to Him, “Do You not hear how many things they testify against You?”
Matthew 27:14 NASB95
14 And He did not answer him with regard to even a single charge, so the governor was quite amazed.
The Jews state the claim, the charge in Luke’s account (Lk23:5)
Luke 23:5 NASB95
5 But they kept on insisting, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching all over Judea, starting from Galilee even as far as this place.”
While they try to paint the picture of Jesus as an insurrectionist, a revolutionist. He says nothing and they demand Barabbas.
Side note, for more details on the sending to Herod that happens between (Jn18:38-39) please look at Lk23:6-12).
Back to Barabbas, he was a murderer, he was an insurrectionist, some places call him a zealot, he was a threat to Rome, but the Jews wanted him released.
Please turn with me to what Matthew says
Matthew 27:20–21 NASB95
20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to put Jesus to death. 21 But the governor said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas.”
Matthew 27:22–23 NASB95
22 Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said, “Crucify Him!” 23 And he said, “Why, what evil has He done?” But they kept shouting all the more, saying, “Crucify Him!”
Barabbas, we want Barabbas picture inserted here.
Courson in his commentary says this about these verses
“Barabbas means son of the father. History tells us that his first name was Jesus. So here we have Jesus, son of the father, or do you want Jesus Christ? Barabbas would be set free because Jesus would go to the cross in his place. And, we are set free because Jesus went to the cross in our place as well.”
