No fanfare

We get to another significant event in the New Testament, in the life and times of Jesus today.
There was no fanfare publically before the birth of Jesus - only after it
There was no fanfare of Jesus childhood - just a mention at 12-years old of knowledge, favor and obedience
There is no fanfare given by Luke of the baptism of Jesus in our passage before us this morning.
We will draw in some from other gospels some today, but our focus will stay here in Luke.

The Baptism

Luke 3:21–22 NASB95
21 Now when all the people were baptized, Jesus was also baptized, and while He was praying, heaven was opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came out of heaven, “You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased.”
Do you notice anything significant in these verses?
No fanfare, when others were baptized, Jesus came and was baptized.
You see the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily form
You see a voice that came out of heaven speak.
Can you see the “triune” God in these verses?
God’s hand was on John the Baptizer, he had a great response to a message of baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins (3:3) fulfilling the prophesy (3:4-6)
Jesus was also baptized, but for a different purpose, not for repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
Jesus was baptized to
Fulfill all righteousness and to display full obedience to the Father
See Matthew 3:15 “15 But Jesus answering said to him, “Permit it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he permitted Him.”
To be a representation of His death, burial and resurrection that was to come
His baptism identified with the sinners He came to save.
An example of the type of baptism (immersion; death, burial, resurrection) that was to be for believers.
His baptism was the start of His ministry (Act1:21-22, 10:37-38)
Acts 1:21–22 NASB95
21 “Therefore it is necessary that of the men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us— 22 beginning with the baptism of John until the day that He was taken up from us—one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection.”
and furthered by
Acts 10:37–38 NASB95
37 you yourselves know the thing which took place throughout all Judea, starting from Galilee, after the baptism which John proclaimed. 38 You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.
His baptism is part of the work of redemption for men that was to come (Mt20:22; Lk12:50)
Matthew 20:22 NASB95
22 But Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?” They said to Him, “We are able.”
Let me put this verse back before you again
Luke 3:21–22 NASB95
21 Now when all the people were baptized, Jesus was also baptized, and while He was praying, heaven was opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came out of heaven, “You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased.”
Notice, when did heaven open up (v.21)?
When Jesus was praying!
What was the proof (v.22)?
The Holy Spirit descended, was visible
The Father in heaven spoke!
The Father identified Jesus as His Son
The Spirit came upon Jesus as visible proof, fulfilling the prophesy given to John (Jn1:33) (Other scripture ref: Act2:2-4)
John 1:33 NASB95
33 “I did not recognize Him, but He who sent me to baptize in water said to me, ‘He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, this is the One who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.’
Interesting fact, only Luke mentions that this all happened when Jesus was praying. Prayer in Luke is scene many times over, but to us we should see Jesus total reliance on the Father through prayer and the Fathers response!
Let me go back to the Holy Spirit if I may; He was visible, tangible, sure evidence that He, the Holy Spirit had come upon Jesus. On Pentecost we see this happen with the disciples in the upper room, tangible evidence (Act2:2-4)
Meyer says: “What this scene was in the life of the Lord, Pentecost was for the church. Then she was anointed for her divine mission among men; the unction of the Holy One rested upon her, to be continued and renewed as the centuries slowly passed.”
From sinners being baptized for repentance and the remission of sins, to the sinless One being baptized in whom the Father is well pleased and the Holy Spirit descended upon!
The Fathers words “I am well pleased” fulfills (Ps2:7; and an echo of Isa42:1); Jesus is the Son, and is the Suffering Servant.
Jesus begins His earthly, bodily ministry with the blessings of the Father and the power of the Holy Spirit at about 30-years old (v.23).
According to the (Num4:2-3) the age of 30 is when a man would be considered mature and could begin their service.
Numbers 4:2–3 NASB95
2 “Take a census of the descendants of Kohath from among the sons of Levi, by their families, by their fathers’ households, 3 from thirty years and upward, even to fifty years old, all who enter the service to do the work in the tent of meeting.

Genealogy of Jesus

Let me read the scripture, then give some information about the genealogy
Luke 3:23–24 NASB95
23 When He began His ministry, Jesus Himself was about thirty years of age, being, as was supposed, the son of Joseph, the son of Eli, 24 the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph,
Luke 3:25–26 NASB95
25 the son of Mattathias, the son of Amos, the son of Nahum, the son of Hesli, the son of Naggai, 26 the son of Maath, the son of Mattathias, the son of Semein, the son of Josech, the son of Joda,
Luke 3:27–28 NASB95
27 the son of Joanan, the son of Rhesa, the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, the son of Neri, 28 the son of Melchi, the son of Addi, the son of Cosam, the son of Elmadam, the son of Er,
Luke 3:29–30 NASB95
29 the son of Joshua, the son of Eliezer, the son of Jorim, the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, 30 the son of Simeon, the son of Judah, the son of Joseph, the son of Jonam, the son of Eliakim,
Luke 3:31–32 NASB95
31 the son of Melea, the son of Menna, the son of Mattatha, the son of Nathan, the son of David, 32 the son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz, the son of Salmon, the son of Nahshon,
Luke 3:33–34 NASB95
33 the son of Amminadab, the son of Admin, the son of Ram, the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah, 34 the son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham, the son of Terah, the son of Nahor,
Luke 3:35–36 NASB95
35 the son of Serug, the son of Reu, the son of Peleg, the son of Heber, the son of Shelah, 36 the son of Cainan, the son of Arphaxad, the son of Shem, the son of Noah, the son of Lamech,
Luke 3:37–38 NASB95
37 the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Mahalaleel, the son of Cainan, 38 the son of Enosh, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.
Luke having marked the beginning of Jesus ministry, stops to give the genealogy of Jesus before getting to the ministry works of Jesus.
Luke starts the genealogy with Jesus going back to Adam. Whereas Matthew (Mt1:1-17) begins with Abraham and comes forward to Jesus.
Luke gives us the genealogy of His mother Mary; whereas Matthew gives the genealogy of Joseph
Note in (3:23)
Luke 3:23 NASB95
23 When He began His ministry, Jesus Himself was about thirty years of age, being, as was supposed, the son of Joseph, the son of Eli,
Note it says “supposed,” maybe your version could say, “So was thought,” “Known as, thought of as, regarded as, commonly held as.” that is why they trace to Mary in the Luke account.
Luke by putting the genealogy there shows that this is the child, human child, that was born. Born of the line of David and has a right to the throne of David.
Luke starts, traces to Adam to show that the Son of man, Jesus, belongs to all mankind, not just the Jewish people.
Interesting fact, Mark in his gospel shows Jesus the Servant, no need for genealogy for no one cares about the genealogy of a servant, but do a king.
Interesting fact, John presents Jesus as the Son of God, so there can be no genealogy there for that is not his focus, it is belief whom He is.
The recorded genealogy is important for the Jesus for here is what Courson says and will stop there.
“Within forty years after Jesus’ crucifixion, when the temple was burned in AD70, all records of Jewish genealogies were destroyed— rendering all Jews unable to trace their genealogies. Thus, no one —including the Antichrist — can claim with integrity to have a genealogical right to the kingdom. Jesus is Lord uniquely, exclusively, absolutely — of this we can be sure completely.”
