What words would you say should describe our public worship gathering?
In doing some self-evaluation lately, I’ve noticed that my pastoral prayer at the beginning of our service seems to often be repetitive. There’s one common theme: honor and glory. This evening I want to talk about some words that our public worship should be described by.
Romans 12:1-2 Involves the whole being, laid down before the Lord. Engaging the mind, testing and discerning. Valuing what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Romans 12:1–2 ESV
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Hebrews 12:28-29 Reverence (modesty) and awe, so amazing that we are even cautious.
Hebrews 12:28–29 ESV
Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire.
Psalm 100: Joy, gladness, singing Know! He made us, we are His. Thanksgiving, praise. Bless, to adore.
Psalm 100 ESV
A Psalm for giving thanks. Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth! Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing! Know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name! For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.
Revelation 4:11 Worthy. Does our public worship line up with what God is deserving of? Glory- to reflect His splendor Honor- respect, to point out the specialness Power- dunamis, supernatural ability.
Revelation 4:11 ESV
“Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.”
