Introduction
Introduction
We continue today in chapter 10 of Hebrews. If you would like to turn there we will be reading starting in verse 19. I would encourage you to bring a physical copy bible every week so that you can follow along and to develop that habit for turning to it. Chapter 10 is a transition section. Since chapter 4 the author has been clearly explaining the effect of the work of Jesus on the cross. The death, burial and resurrection of the savior.
The single event that saves men from the deserved wrath of God and reconciling men back to himself through the justifier and the sanctifier Jesus. He has shown how the Old Testament shadowed the events that would take place in the New. That the reality of what was only partially revealed has been fully revealed in Christ.
In the first half of chapter 10 it is made clear that Jesus is the one and only sacrifice that can take away sins. The old testament sacrifices could not achieve this.
4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
But Christ accomplished this
10 By this will, we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all time.
12 But this man, after offering one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God.
14 For by one offering he has perfected forever those who are sanctified.
18 Now where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.
With the work of Christ established the author turns to call to exhort the readers the christian community to live in light of this revelation. That the old has been replaced with the new and he calls them to align their lives with the revelation of these truths.
He calls them to live in a new way. Last week Josh walked us through the author’s call to have confidence. Confidence to enter into the presence of God. Not because of what we have accomplished but what He has accomplished.

We can have this confidence because God is faithful.
23 Let us hold on to the confession of our hope without wavering, since he who promised is faithful.
But this confidence is not just something that is internal. There is a response to this.
24 And let us consider one another in order to provoke love and good works, 25 not neglecting to gather together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging each other, and all the more as you see the day approaching.
He said let us, who is us? The people of the church. We are to be active in giving careful thought in order to provoke or stimulate one another in love and good works. Which includes gathering together and encouraging each other.
He commands them to be a living community that is effected by the gospel. The saving work of the one true sacrifice that can save a person and remove their sins. There is not other way for this to be accomplished.
After the encouragement in the positive he give a dire warning. This is the fourth warning section of Hebrews. One that has great consequences if ignored. Let us open the Word of God and read his truth.
26 For if we deliberately go on sinning after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a terrifying expectation of judgment and the fury of a fire about to consume the adversaries. 28 Anyone who disregarded the law of Moses died without mercy, based on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 How much worse punishment do you think one will deserve who has trampled on the Son of God, who has regarded as profane the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know the one who has said, Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, and again, The Lord will judge his people. 31 It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God. 32 Remember the earlier days when, after you had been enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings. 33 Sometimes you were publicly exposed to taunts and afflictions, and at other times you were companions of those who were treated that way. 34 For you sympathized with the prisoners and accepted with joy the confiscation of your possessions, because you know that you yourselves have a better and enduring possession. 35 So don’t throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. 36 For you need endurance, so that after you have done God’s will, you may receive what was promised. 37 For yet in a very little while, the Coming One will come and not delay. 38 But my righteous one will live by faith; and if he draws back, I have no pleasure in him. 39 But we are not those who draw back and are destroyed, but those who have faith and are saved.
The “For” at the beginning of this paragraph ties it back to the previous verses if not the previous section as a whole.
24 And let us consider one another in order to provoke love and good works, 25 not neglecting to gather together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging each other, and all the more as you see the day approaching.
He encourages them to live in a new way. A way that is a result of the new covenant as the word of God is written on their hearts and the Holy Spirit works in their minds and lives. God’s people are to be together and spurring one another on to love and good works and encouraging each other for he brings forth a warning that should turn the head of any person in the church who hears these words.

Receiving the knowledge of the truth
He speaks to the community as a whole as he includes himself in the text. We are to live in the way of love but if we have recieved the knowledge of the truth. The word for knowledge isn’t just ordinary knowledge but full knowledge and understanding and discernment.
In the Words of Pilate What is truth?
38 “What is truth?” said Pilate. After he had said this, he went out to the Jews again and told them, “I find no grounds for charging him.
The truth. What is the truth that he speaks of? It is the one and only Jesus. The entire book of Hebrews has been centralized on Jesus. Who he is, what he has done, How he was foretold and what has been accomplished through him. Here is no different Jesus is the truth.
The truth was in him
14 The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We observed his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
20 But that is not how you came to know Christ, 21 assuming you heard about him and were taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus, 22 to take off your former way of life, the old self that is corrupted by deceitful desires, 23 to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, the one created according to God’s likeness in righteousness and purity of the truth.

33 You sent messengers to John, and he testified to the truth.

6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
The Truth sets men free
31 Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you continue in my word, you really are my disciples. 32 You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
The Truth Sanctifies
17 Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. 19 I sanctify myself for them, so that they also may be sanctified by the truth.
The Unrighteous Profane the Truth
18 For God’s wrath is revealed from heaven against all godlessness and unrighteousness of people who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth,
25 They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served what has been created instead of the Creator, who is praised forever. Amen.
8 but wrath and anger to those who are self-seeking and disobey the truth while obeying unrighteousness.
9 The coming of the lawless one is based on Satan’s working, with every kind of miracle, both signs and wonders serving the lie, 10 and with every wicked deception among those who are perishing. They perish because they did not accept the love of the truth and so be saved. 11 For this reason God sends them a strong delusion so that they will believe the lie, 12 so that all will be condemned—those who did not believe the truth but delighted in unrighteousness. 13 But we ought to thank God always for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because from the beginning God has chosen you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and through belief in the truth.
Leads to Salvation
13 In him you also were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and when you believed. 14 The Holy Spirit is the down payment of our inheritance, until the redemption of the possession, to the praise of his glory.
3 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, 4 for we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all the saints 5 because of the hope reserved for you in heaven. You have already heard about this hope in the word of truth, the gospel 6 that has come to you. It is bearing fruit and growing all over the world, just as it has among you since the day you heard it and came to truly appreciate God’s grace.
3 This is good, and it pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
Deliberately Sinning

There is only on truth...
To this group the knowledge of truth. The knowledge of who and what Christ is has been taught and they have recieved this truth. But inside this community there must be people that have recieved this truth but have turned away from it. There are those in the group that must be living in what is called willful or deliberate sin.
They know what the truth says but they do not obey it. They fall into their own ways and their own motives. As we read before they turn from this truth, they shy away from it, they turn from it and instead of repenting of sin and turning toward the good that is God. They do the opposite they see the truth and they turn away from it t deliberately sin.
Why would anyone turn from the grace, mercy, and love filled truth? Why would anyone who has come to understands the truth fail to walk in the truth?
Persecution - The truth is contrary to the world. A person who lives their life in obedience and submission to the Truth. To Jesus but living in obedience to his words will find themselves at odds with the people around them.
Words - The bible says what comes from the mouth comes from the heart. When your words honor God you will find that people will not understand why you do not curse or tell crude Jokes. Why you don’t joint in husband bashing or demeaning your wife in front of your buddies. When you are unwilling to lie to get out of a mistake or speak up even though there are consequences.
Ideals - When you come to the word of God to determine your world view. You will find that you will be opposed to the world. When you align your marriage and the biblical roles as outlined in scripture you will be called many things. When you see life as created by God and that every life is precious you will stand against the world. If you believe that the men and women are created in God’s image and that is how you define gender you will stand against the world. When you do not pursue the almighty dollar at the expense of those you love you will be opposed.
15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
If you do not love the things of this world you will find that the world does not Love you.
Belief in God - God and his gospel is offensive to any that the holy spirit has not drawn to the truth. We are speak the truth and when we do people will be appalled. They will believe it to be foolish. We will be religious fanatics and crazy people.
This will not only be in the world but in the church as well. There will not only be false teachers that will draw people away with charismatic speech and promises that do not have the truth in them but there will be those in the church that when the truth becomes the guiding factor for people it will be rejected at all cost. The Pharisees could not accept the truth as he performed miracles before them. All they saw was a threat to their world.
False Teachers - There are many and they are good. They are full of partial truths. There is a book that I have read over the years that there is a group that cannot lie. However through out the book you find that by only revealing part of a truth or withholding truth in certain ways that they are capable of very deceitful lies. We see this today in so many ways that we cannot discuss them all today but they all rest in minimizing the holiness of God and minimizing the sinfulness of man. Both of these are very comforting lies but are completely contrary to the author’s writing in this chapter.
The Lust of the Flesh - Sometimes we just like our sin to much. We live in a would that pedals to every lust in the heart of man. What we put in our bodies and in our minds is engineered to excite the lusts and passions of the sinful heart. Instant pleasure at all sorts of costs. The truth is set before us and we look at it we recognize it we agree with is and the we say oh well. There is a deliberate willingness to continue in sinning.
Neglect - When a person gets complacent in reading the truth, praying, fasting, or any other spiritual discipline, the result will be a turning from the truth to the sins of the flesh.
Fellowship - And as the author has specifically stated in the previous passage. To remove oneself from the community of believers will make it very difficult to stay living in the truth.
There is a constant pull against the truth in a believer’s life and it takes the work of the Holy Spirit and a willing person to diligently live in ways that resist these causes of people willingly and deliberately sinning against God.

Why is this important. Because the cost is great.
26 For if we deliberately go on sinning after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,
There no longer remains a sacrifice for sins. There was not sacrifice for intentional sin in the old testament.
30 “But the person who acts defiantly, whether native or resident alien, blasphemes the Lord. That person is to be cut off from his people. 31 He will certainly be cut off, because he has despised the Lord’s word and broken his command; his guilt remains on him.”
To come to know the truth. To completely understand it and then who willingly turns from it, leaves a person without hope. There is no new sacrifices. Only the sacrifice of Jesus can remove sins. It that truth does not turn a person from darkness to light then maybe the dire consequence will.
27 but a terrifying expectation of judgment and the fury of a fire about to consume the adversaries.
There is a terrifying expectation for those who are dismissive of God’s truth. A person who willingly lives in sin after the truth has been understood must be expectant of the judgement of God. The judgment comes with a fire about to consume the adversaries.
This is a quote from
11 Lord, your hand is lifted up to take action, but they do not see it. Let them see your zeal for your people and be put to shame. Let fire consume your adversaries.
He is warning them. God is just you are not beyond his punishment. For the consequences are harsh.
20 For if, having escaped the world’s impurity through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in these things and defeated, the last state is worse for them than the first. 21 For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness than, after knowing it, to turn back from the holy command delivered to them. 22 It has happened to them according to the true proverb: A dog returns to its own vomit, and, “A washed sow returns to wallowing in the mud.”
We spoke a couple of weeks ago about how flippant Christians live today with regard to sin. The author reminds them of this by drawing them back to Moses.

28 Anyone who disregarded the law of Moses died without mercy, based on the testimony of two or three witnesses.
There was a very distinct difference between willful sin and unintentional sin in the old testament.
32 While the Israelites were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering wood on the Sabbath day. 33 Those who found him gathering wood brought him to Moses, Aaron, and the entire community. 34 They placed him in custody because it had not been decided what should be done to him. 35 Then the Lord told Moses, “The man is to be put to death. The entire community is to stone him outside the camp.” 36 So the entire community brought him outside the camp and stoned him to death, as the Lord had commanded Moses.
A man for what ever reason is found gathering wood on the Sabbath. It is a violation of the covenant with Isreal and it is the Lord himself who gives the sentence. The punishment. Death. Wait a minute all he did was pick up some sticks. How bad is that? He did not deserve death. He willingly went out on the Sabbath and did what he knew was wrong. He deliberately sinned against God for his own reasons.
2 For six days work is to be done, but on the seventh day you are to have a holy day, a Sabbath of complete rest to the Lord. Anyone who does work on it must be executed. 3 Do not light a fire in any of your homes on the Sabbath day.”
God does not take willful sin lightly. Brother and sister if we can take home one thing today is that the just and righteous loving God does not close his eyes toward our sins. This type of will full disobedience is further described as:

29 How much worse punishment do you think one will deserve who has trampled on the Son of God, who has regarded as profane the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?
A worse punishment is deserved for those who willfully sin after knowing the truth. Why? This is how the bible, how God describes willful sin.
He has:

Regarded Profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified
Insulted the Spirit of Grace.
God says that a person who willingly sins against the truth Tramples on Jesus. Regards him with disdain. Regards the purifying blood of Jesus as common or ordinary, anything but holy and insults the spirit of Grace the holy spirit.
This is a dire warning. I have told this story before but one summer our expedition was out in the driveway. I call Tricia out because someone has keyed the entire length of our car multiple times. There are deep scratches all the way down to the under coat. As I am looking at it. Little Tanna comes up behind be and says Daddy I did that. Ok Please explain. Well when I try to get my bike out of the garage by handle bar rubs on it as I try to get it out. Is she in trouble. Nope what can I do. This is much different then sitting down with a child and setting the rules and then having a child willfully disobey them.
God describes this and trampling on his Son, disregarding the blood of his covenant, and insulting His Spirit.
And Who id God? He reminds them of his character.
30 For we know the one who has said, Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, and again, The Lord will judge his people.
In Deuteronomy 32 Isreal has turned from God. They have acted corruptly and are described as a crooked an perverse generation. They are called foolish and senseless and it describes how far they turn from God. The author quotes Verse 35 and 36.
35 Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay. In time their foot will slip, for their day of disaster is near, and their doom is coming quickly.” 36 The Lord will indeed vindicate his people and have compassion on his servants when he sees that their strength is gone and no one is left—slave or free.
All vengeance belongs to the Lord and to sin willfully is to stir up God’s vengeance.
19 Friends, do not avenge yourselves; instead, leave room for God’s wrath, because it is written, Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord.
and He will judge his people.
1 The Mighty One, God, the Lord, speaks; he summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting. 2 From Zion, the perfection of beauty, God appears in radiance. 3 Our God is coming; he will not be silent! Devouring fire precedes him, and a storm rages around him. 4 On high, he summons heaven and earth in order to judge his people: 5 “Gather my faithful ones to me, those who made a covenant with me by sacrifice.” 6 The heavens proclaim his righteousness, for God is the Judge. Selah
He simplifies it to this final statement of the paragraph.
31 It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
14 The sinners in Zion are afraid; trembling seizes the ungodly: “Who among us can dwell with a consuming fire? Who among us can dwell with ever-burning flames?”
5 But I will show you the one to fear: Fear him who has authority to throw people into hell after death. Yes, I say to you, this is the one to fear!
There is an appropriate fear to the judgement of God. The Israelites could not even bear the words of the Lord when he gave the Law. The wanted Moses to speak for them. This was just his words. What does it look like to invoke his anger?
This is a terrifying thought. It is the image of a person who knew the law and then breaks it and gets caught. They steal a vehicle, cheat on taxes, or what ever. It is irrelevant of the crime but the person stands before a judge with full knowledge of the law, the crime, and the punishment. There is nothing left but fear and throwing themselves on the mercy of the court. They knew the truth and rejected it in their lives.

We are to be provoking love and good works, gathering together, and encouraging one another. These are all things that from living in the truth. Aligning our lives with the truth. Obviously this list is not exhaustive as the author will continue to speak on faith, godly discipline, and christian behavior in this book. The author is drawing the readers toward this actions but provides a warning to the church for disregarding the truth.
There maybe a question floating in the back of your mind. Is he talking to believers who are backsliding or unbelievers in the community of God. Well that is a good question. I purposely did not start with claiming one or another because. It is not completely clear.
I looked at many great theologians from different time periods and different views on thing but there one thing that is for sure. They do not agree. The author uses language that makes it clear. Each side has much supporting scripture and evidence and both views can be defended based on the language and words used. But I will summarize it this way.
To Unbelievers
In every congregation and community of believers there will be those that have come to the full knowledge of Christ of the truth. They will understand the Gospel and the truth but will not believe. They will not be saved by faith. The author does not speak of those who’s lives align with the truth, he speaks of those who know the truth and sin willfully. John speaks very directly about those that continue to abide and live in sin.
19 They went out from us, but they did not belong to us; for if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us. However, they went out so that it might be made clear that none of them belongs to us.
6 Everyone who remains in him does not sin; everyone who sins has not seen him or known him. 7 Little children, let no one deceive you. The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. 8 The one who commits sin is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God was revealed for this purpose: to destroy the devil’s works. 9 Everyone who has been born of God does not sin, because his seed remains in him; he is not able to sin, because he has been born of God.
John is very clear that a person who has tasted the truth and turned from it has no hope. The is no other way to redemption but faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and savior. In time many will reveal that they were never believers as they fall away from the truth. That a person who lives in a pattern of willful sin does not know Jesus.
But in the community of believers there will also be those that have saving faith but are drawn away into sin. God does not just turn a blind eye to the sin in a believer. We see in scripture that he corrects and disciplines even the saved.
30 And don’t grieve God’s Holy Spirit. You were sealed by him for the day of redemption.
Much like the church today. There may be someone here who has come to the knowledge of the truth of the Gospel but has not surrendered their life to Jesus as Lord and savior to have faith that they are saved.
9 If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 One believes with the heart, resulting in righteousness, and one confesses with the mouth, resulting in salvation.
If you have not come to this place and you find yourself in living in willful sin even though you know it is wrong, there is no hope for you to change unless you give you life to Jesus. The practice of sin defines your life. Without the work of the Holy Spirit in your life you are bound by sin and will stand before the ultimate judge in you sin. Do not let today slip away. To Believers
The author of Hebrews continues to the end of the chapter with language reminding them of when they were enlightened and defines them as:
39 But we are not those who draw back and are destroyed, but those who have faith and are saved.
The man who was put to death for picking gather wood on the Sabbath. This act did not cut him off from salvation because a person is not saved by what they do or do not do but by faith. But there are consequences for sin.
I believe he is talking to believers. He is using the old testament to call them out of willful disobedience. Specifically going back to the old sacrificial system.
The church today is also full of those that know the truth and are drawn away into willful sins. Though they are not bound by them like the lost they are still drawn away.
Do not be drawn away by persecution or false teaching. They are everywhere. Partial truth. Wonderful promises. But all will be burnt away in the end.
Do not be drawn away by temptation and Lusts of the Flesh. If you know it is wrong, then you must stop. If you can’t on your own which may be likely then seek help. We all struggle in sins each and every day. We always will but there is a difference in struggling with sin and just willingly partaking in it.
Do not be drawn away by neglecting the spiritual disciplines of a believer. Reading the word, prayer, fasting, serving, worship, fellowship.
Do not be drawn away by forsaking the Community of believers. We need each other.
As the world turns further away from the truth there is starting to be a tension that is building in the christian community. Inside the walls of any church that preaches the word and hold the word in the highest honor in every part of the church. Corporate, small group, family, and personal. There will be those that fight against the word.
The author provided this warning but remember the call that we are given.
Our Faith full response to the truth is living in the truth, walking in the truth, worshiping in the truth, obeying the truth, spreading the truth, learning the truth, resting in the truth, and abiding in the truth. The truth that is Jesus Christ.
18 Little children, let us not love in word or speech, but in action and in truth. 19 This is how we will know that we belong to the truth and will reassure our hearts before him 20 whenever our hearts condemn us; for God is greater than our hearts, and he knows all things.
1 The elder: To the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth—and not only I, but also all who know the truth—2 because of the truth that remains in us and will be with us forever. 3 Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love. 4 I was very glad to find some of your children walking in truth, in keeping with a command we have received from the Father.
