B. Formal Elements
Introduction
1.We are all disciples of something. We all follow a person a thing or something.
2. Jose Fernandez lived in Cuba and he wanted to be a part of the USA Kingdom. His dad had left and he and his mom tried to get in 3 times and got stopped by the US Coast Guard. Finally they tried another attempt; at one point the boat hit a huge wave and it lost a person. Fernandez jumped out because he was a swimmer. It was his mom. Fifteen minutes later he made it back to the boat with his mom in his arms. Jose Fernandez ended being a great baseball player his first contract was 2 million dollars. He wanted to be a part of our great country and was willing to do whatever it took to get here.
3. Today we are going to look at a kingdom that is different than any other kingdom ever to come and greater than any other kingdom. It is the messianic Kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ. He wants us to be disciples in his kingdom. Tonight my prayer is we don’t settle pursuing other kingdoms.
Body
Transition-So what do you need to know if you want to experience Kingdom life to the full, you must know that-.
I. Because Jesus is here you must respond to the gospel message (1:14-15)
In the first 13 verses we have that the gospel is here and before Jesus steps onto the scene John the Baptist is here telling us that he is coming to make the way straight for Jesus. John who had a very successful ministry was telling everyone it is not about me Jesus is here. He then proceeds to baptist Jesus and the father says this is my son in whom I am well pleased and then Jesus gets tempted for 40 forty days and now he is ready to go public with his ministry.
1:14 Now after John had been taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee, bpreaching the gospel of God,
15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”

All Great movements have a message:
Nike:just do it
Bill Clinton: its the economy stupid
Donald trump: make America great again
It’s impossible to avoid the legacy of Steve Jobs.
Apple is the most valuable company in the world. The four industries he touched – music, movies, computers and phones – he changed forever. He’s been the subject of countless articles, dozens of documentaries and now two feature films.
So what was secret? What was the thing he did that made all his success possible?
“I consider the most important job of someone like myself recruiting,” Jobs said in the documentary Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine. In the documentary, it detailed how Jobs would target people he was particularly inspired by, and then relentlessly pursue them.
How would be ultimately close those great people? He sold a vision. He sold Apple as a place of few rules and ultimate possibilities, to which any other company paled in comparison.
“Most places in life are continuing telling you that your dreams aren’t possible or practical,” Jobs said in the documentary, reflecting on his recruiting pitch. “You don’t want to hear that when you’re under 30. What you want to do is race after it.”
A look at some of Jobs direct recruiting pitches
In 1982, Jobs wanted to recruit John Sculley – then, the CEO of PepsiCo – to Apple. His pitch was blunt.
“Do you want to sell sugared water for the rest of your life?” Jobs reportedly asked Sculley. “Or do you want to change the world?”
Jesus was here to change the world and if you did not get his message you will never get Christianity.
Explanation:
What is involved in the gospel message?
1.Repent (15)-
The time of decision had come; thus the required response to which Jesus summoned His hearers was a double command: Repent and believe the good news! Repentance and faith (belief) are bound together in one piece (not temporally successive acts). To “repent” (metanoeō; cf. Mark 1:4) is to turn away from an existing object of trust (e.g., oneself).[1]
Why do we need to repent? The short answer is that all of us like to trust in our own track record to earn our way to heaven. We have to turn from trusting in ourselves and trusting in Jesus Christ.
What keeps us from repentance?
We have a lot of excuses:
We do not think we are in that bad of shape. We don’t really think we need to be forgiven. I mean we sin but we are not as bad as the guy next to us.
So instead of repenting we make excuses:
Blame shift
Think about Adam in the Garden-Adam-The woman you put me with: she is the real problem.
Aaron-One time Moses went away to be with God for awhile and while he was gone the people they made a gold calf and started worshiping idols. So Moses comes back and says what in the world is going on? Here is Aaron’s response: “They brought me their gold, and all i did was toss it into the fire and, would you believe, out came the calf.”
He tried to pass the responsibility
“The problem is that when we lose any sense of sin and responsibility, we also lose any burning desire for pardon[2].”
In order for us to believe the gospel message we have to believe that are sin is serious enough and that we are wicked enough that we deserve to pay for our sins. The other day I was talking to a man and I said have you ever sinned? What does that make you? A sinner? Then I asked a follow up question-Is your sin so serious that you deserve Hell? He was not so sure about that. You see if we want to understand the gospel we have to realize the weight and seriousness of our sin means we deserve and are headed to eternity apart from God without his intervention. We have to turn from ourselves and turn to Jesus.
But you see we don’t just turn away from something we turn to something. We turn and a believe in a person.
2.Believe (15)
Repentance and belief working together. Story of the parachute from Ray Comfort and Kirk Cameron. Parachute not knowing the plane is going to go down is going to be a lot different than if you know the plane is going down. If you know the plan is going down you are going to grab onto the parachute and hold on for dear life. Many are not holding onto Christ for dear life.
To “believe” (pisteuō, here pisteuete en, the only NT appearance of this combination) is to commit oneself wholeheartedly to an object of faith.
We don’t just turn away from something we turn to someone. We turn to Jesus, because only Jesus was perfect in all his ways, only Jesus could relate to man kind and ultimately only Jesus is the one who died on the cross and defeated death. Have you turned aways from trusting in yourself and put your faith in him.
What exactly do you have to believe in to enter the kingdom?
1. We have to believe that we are sinners and that Christ died for sins.
2. We have to believe that Jesus was buried and was raised on the third day.
3. We have to believer that he is still alive today.
Application:
Do you clearly understand the gospel of Grace?
Illustration-Charles Blondin. Everyone cheered for Houdini to cross Niagra Falls but only Blondin would get on his shoulders.
Do you need to repent and believe in the gospel today?
[Transition] We have seen that to experience kingdom life to the full we must know that the kingdom message is to repent and believe. But you also have to know that—
II. Because Jesus is king you must know he is the only worthy King (17-18 & 20)
Transition-Tonight we have seen that since Jesus has arrived the kingdom is available like never before. God wants us to experience it: we have seen that it is essential to know the king’s message, to respond to the kings Call, and to never forget how great King Jesus really.
Transition {we have seen that to experience kingdom life to the full we have know the kingdom message and that Jesus is the only worthy king. Lastly]
III. Because Jesus is here you must respond to his call (1:16-20)
Background of this time:
“Unlike the rabbis, Jesus is the one who initiates the invitation to follow him, not the disciples; and unlike rabbinic disciples, Jesus’ followers are not called to follow the study of the law but to follow “him”.[3]”
Illustration-Picking for pee wee sports you want the best kids. I went from playing upward basketball to coaching pee wee soccer. When I got there one of the coaches told me: “this is not upward. Don’t listen to a word these guys say”.
Most kings chose guys based upon how good they were. Jesus choses us based off of his love for us.
Religion says you have to act a certain way in order to be accepted. Jesus says because I love you I accept you.
Coaches want the best players. Jesus wants our hearts.
This is a new kingdom a new way with a group of people.
We have seen what the gospel is and now Jesus is going to make it personal. we are going to see what some of the results are of someone who has repented and believed in Jesus.
Just as Jesus’ followers will have to learn a value scale different from that of ‘those who are reckoned as rulers of the nations’ (10:42–45), so the Messiah himself refuses to assert his authority by an impressive show of divine (still less of worldly) pomp and pageantry. The kingdom of God comes not with fanfare but through the gradual gathering of a group of socially insignificant people in an unnoticed corner of provincial Galilee.[4]
16 As He was going along by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew, the brother of Simon, casting a net in the sea; for they were fishermen.
17 And Jesus said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.”
18 Immediately they left their nets and followed Him.
19 Going on a little farther, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who were also in the boat mending the nets.
20 Immediately He called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and went away to follow Him.
Explanation:
What are some evidenced someone has repented and believed the gospel?
1. Follow Jesus (17)
If a disciple has a teacher they are supposed to do everything that the teacher does because there goal is to become like there teacher. My friend went on a trip and they were supposed to do everything the rabbi did. Even to the point if the Rabbi walked in the water they were supposed to walk in the water. What we like to do is follow him in what we want to follow him in. He wants all of us.
2. Go after Jesus (20)
Christianity is not a religion it is a relationship. These men turned to Jesus. It was all about getting to know him more. Before we went to summer camp we did a devotional and it was all about what is the greatest thing you can do as a believer in Jesus. Do you remember. It was sit at his feet. There is a great difference between knowing God and knowing about God?
3. you are a fisher of men (17)
Notice in this verse we do not make Jesus. Jesus makes us.
quote: The purpose of discipleship is announced by Jesus in his call to Simon and Andrew: ‘Come after me, and I shall make you become fishers of men’ (1:17). Plainly, discipleship has ‘mission work’ as its purpose. Striking is the universal nature of the mission Jesus envisages.”[5]
We look at these evidences and if you are like me you are saying Nate I am not perfect. We are not taking about being perfect we are saved only because of Grace. Peter’s life is a great picture of this he had some times of greatness but much of his life with Jesus he had his foot in his mouth. Right before Jesus was crucified Peter denied Jesus three times. After Jesus has a meeting with Peter on the beach Jesus turns him into a major instrument in the spread of the gospel which means God molded him into a fisher of men.
4. He is the most worthy thing in your life.
Explanation: These fishermen were willing to say that Jesus is more worthy than our job, our business and even our family. He is the most worthy thing in the world to pursue.
Illustration: Count Zinzendorf-His missionaries who went to Africa in a Coffin, the ones who sold themselves into slaver, and the one’s who would become lepers.
Application:
Following Jesus is the result of someone who has repented and believed.
Are you following Jesus?
Do you know God or do you know about him?
Have you decisively nailed down your salvation?
Conclusion
Jose Fernandez was about to sign a 200 million dollar contract. Jose Fernandez was a believer that the United States of America was the greatest country to live in. We know that he believed this because he was willing to go to jail, take risks to get here even if it meant death. He had believed so strongly in the USA that he got here. He died in a drug overdose. As great as our country is it does not even compare to the kingdom of God. And he was willing to risk his life to get here. The amazing thing about the kingdom of God is that God risked his life so you could be a part of it. His kingdom
The story of their call (set out as two parallel stories of two pairs of brothers), while reflecting the specific context of the fishing industry to which they belonged, represents the essential elements in discipleship; the relationship with Jesus (ὀπίσω μου/ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῷ), the active promotion of his mission (ἁλιεῖς ἀνθρώπων), and the total commitment to his cause (ἀφέντες τὰ δίκτυα/τὸν πατέρα). W. T. Shiner gives a detailed analysis of the elements which make up Mark’s three call stories (1:16–18, 19–20; 2:14), demonstrating their close formal similarity while differing in detail.[6]
Tonight God wants to challenge you to follow him with your whole life
1. Have you repented and believed the gospel-I am not asking have you said a prayer-Are you sure you have come to a point in your life where you know that you know that you have turned to Jesus for the hope of your eternity.
2. Maybe for you God is calling you to be a fisher of men. Kingdom boat.
3. Is there evidence in your life that you have repented and believed the gospel?
