Revelation 2:8–11 ESV
8 “And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write: ‘The words of the first and the last, who died and came to life. 9 “ ‘I know your tribulation and your poverty (but you are rich) and the slander of those who say that they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan. 10 Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life. 11 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who conquers will not be hurt by the second death.’
INTRO
The Book of Revelation B. Smyrna (2:8–11)

Smyrna was a proud and beautiful city. Three to four hundred years after it had been destroyed by Alyattes, king of Lydia, it was rebuilt in 290 B.C. by Lysimachus and Antigonus as a model city. It boasted a famous stadium, library, and public theater (the largest in Asia). It claimed to be the birthplace of the great epic poet Homer. A famous thoroughfare called the Street of Gold curved around Mt. Pagus (which rose over 500 feet from the harbor) like a necklace on the statue of a goddess. At either end was a temple, one to a local variety of Cybele, known as Sipylene Mother (a patron divinity), and the other to Zeus. The acropolis on Mt. Pagus was called the crown or garland of Smyrna. In NT times the population may have been about 200,000. Coins describe the city as “First of Asia in beauty and size.”

Revelation 2. To Smyrna (2:8–11)

Unlike many of the cities that developed without purpose and forethought, the city planners of Smyrna had obviously done their homework. There was a cohesiveness and a pattern about the architecture that made it blend together; and as one stood at the sea harbor looking up toward the top of Mount Pagus, he could see a panorama that led it to be called “a crown.”

Like many of the other cities, it too was a center of the emperor cult, erecting a temple to Tiberius in AD 26. It was also the first city to build a temple to Dea Roma (the goddess Rome). It also had famous temples to Zeus and Cybele connected by a majestic mall. Important for this letter, it also had a large Jewish population who was violently opposed to Christianity.

A Commentary on the Revelation of John (2) The Letter to Smyrna (2:8–11)

Some years later, the Jews joined the gentiles to form a mob and to call for the death of the bishop of the church, Polycarp. They actively assisted in his martyrdom by burning and prevented the Christians from getting possession of his body (Martyrdom of Polycarp).

In AD 155, Polycarp, bishop of Smyrna, was burned alive for refusing to call Caesar “Lord”

A Commentary on the Revelation of John (2) The Letter to Smyrna (2:8–11)

After Polycarp refused to renounce his Christian faith and swear by the genius of Caesar, a mob consisting of both heathen and Jews “cried out with uncontrollable wrath and a loud shout, ‘This is the teacher of Asia, the father of the Christians, the destroyer of our gods, who teaches many neither to offer sacrifice nor to worship’ ”

Revelation 2. To Smyrna (2:8–11)

Smyrna was actually a name for myrrh, the fragrant plant used in the anointing oil prescribed in the book of Exodus (Exod 30:22–33) and used in the process of embalming in Egypt and elsewhere. Its association with death (though not its only use) and suffering are well documented. Smyrna then was famous for two things: first, its beauty and, second, its suffering.

The Good The Bad and The Ugly…the Good again!
Revelation 2:8 ESV

Jesus is GOD
Jesus is the Resurrected one

Looks Can Be Deceiving

Revelation 2:9 ESV
9 “ ‘I know your tribulation and your poverty (but you are rich) and the slander of those who say that they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.
Tertullian in AD 197 in a defense of Christianity to the Roman Empire said: “We multiply whenever we are mowed down by you; the blood of Christians is the seed of the church”.
In the Martyrdom, Polycarp is recorded as saying on the day of his death: "Eighty and six years I have served Him, and He has done me no wrong. How then can I now blaspheme my King and Savior? You threaten me with a fire that burns for a season, and after a little while is quenched; but you are ignorant of the fire of everlasting punishment that is prepared for the wicked.”
You might look like a looser but your not!… Not in Christ anyway
Blessed are the
Matthew 5:2–11 ESV
2 And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying: 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 5 “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. 6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. 7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. 8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. 9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. 10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.
James 2:5 ESV
5 Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him?
1 Corinthians 1:27 ESV
27 But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong;
This is what Jesus is saying to His church…
As christians we are not of this world therefore we should never expect to “WIN” here
Anti-semitism is wrong… but we need to understand this
We are the Children of Abraham
Matthew 3:9 ESV
9 And do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham.
Romans 2:28–29 ESV
28 For no one is a Jew who is merely one outwardly, nor is circumcision outward and physical. 29 But a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter. His praise is not from man but from God.
Galatians 3:7 ESV
7 Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham.
John 8:31-47 States:
Abrahams sons do the works of Abraham
If God is our Father then we would love Jesus
We can only accept this by the spirit
Read Romans 11.17-25… Here Paul is telling us that “Jewishness” the promise of Abraham belongs to those of the faith not just the blood.
One day there will be a reconciliation between Jesus and the Israelite people
Just because you go to church does not mean you are part of The Church!
Matthew 7:21 “21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.”
Are you a part of The Church !?
OR a part of the synagogue of Satan??
Looks Can Be Deceiving !!

Satans Days Are Numbered

Revelation 2:10 ESV
10 Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.
Do not fear Suffering
It is temporary
It is expected
It is purposeful
2 Timothy 3:12 “12 Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,”
1 Peter 4:12 “12 Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.”
2 Corinthians 4:17 “17 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison,”
Do not fear Satan
He is defeated
Revelation 12:9 “9 And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.”
Revelation 12:12 “12 Therefore, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!””
Revelation 20:10 “10 and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.”
Do not fear Death
It is not the end
John 10:28 “28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.”
John 11:26 “26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?””
1 Corinthians 15:53 “53 For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality.”
Crowns are mentioned a number of times in the Bible, and it is instructive to note their occurrences:
• Crown of life (James 1:12 “12 Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.”
• Crown of righteousness (2 Timothy 4:8 “8 Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.”
• Crown of glory (1 Peter 5:4 “4 And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.”
• Crown of rejoicing (1 Thessalonians 2:19 “19 For what is our hope or joy or crown of boasting before our Lord Jesus at his coming? Is it not you?”
• Crown of incorruption (1 Corinthians 9:25 “25 Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.”
Each, in some way, draws attention to the blessings of salvation that are ours in Christ.
Revelation 2:11 ESV
11 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who conquers will not be hurt by the second death.’
Things are worse than they appear and still better then they seem!
Christ has the last word.
Christ is alive forevermore.
Christ knows your pain.
You are rich with the riches of Christ.
You will receive from him the crown of life.
He will not let you be hurt by the second death.
PRAYER
Good God and Father in Heaven give us zeal and passion! Grant us an ear to hear what you have said to this church. Give us the courage and resolve to be conquerors and have no fear of death knowing that the second death has no power over us!
