Intro

hiw many of you have been on a long drive on a windy road
Read 1 Peter 1:10-12
1 Peter 1:10–12 ESV
10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, 11 inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. 12 It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look.
Remember last week we talked about the great salvation we have
in a part 2 of sorts we will continue on in this topic of the great salvation we have
The promise made more sure for us
We have the complete story of salvation
A story watched intently by both prophets and angels
The promise of salvation
1 Peter 1:10–11 ESV
10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, 11 inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories.
Peter points to the fact that even the prophets talked about this grace
This salvation that was to be ours
Scour the old testament and you will see everywhere in there the plot line of salvation for God’s people
these prophets will continually call the people of God to repentance only to see them fall back
They continually look forward to a final sacrifice -
A Savior of God’s people
These prophets longed to see what we have
2 Peter 1:19 (ESV)
19 And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts
and we the word fully confirmed
the promise made more sure
the prophets didn’t
Hebrews 11:39 ESV
39 And all these, though commended through their faith, did not receive what was promised,
Matthew 13:17 ESV
17 For truly, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.
we have the whole story
This is why we must not throw away our old testament
This is why it is so important
Without it we only have half of the story
Why is it important that savior would be born in bethleham?????
Micah 5:2 ESV
2 But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.
Matthew 2:5 ESV
5 They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:
The inspiration
1 Peter 1:11–12 ESV
11 inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. 12 It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look.
The inportance and significance of the prophets cannot be under stated
They looked for salvation
They inquired about it
And it was revealed to them by the spirit
But not the whole story only that they were prophesying of something that would come
Jesus and the apostles used the words of the prophets to call people to faith
The difference was they had the rest of the story
They had seen what salavation was
They had a knowledge the spirit didnt give to the prophets but he gave to the apostles
The same spirit inspires both old and new testament
The angles
Rejoiced
They watch on hoping
They love to see a good salvation
Luke 15:10 ESV
10 Just so, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
