Intro; As we continue our Christian Life Studies [Porter Barrington] we come to the most important Person in the history of mankind, “Jesus Christ The Son of God”.
Jesus is the focal point of Christianity because He is the Son of God made living in man. Christ is Christianity and Christianity is Christ. He is the Supreme subject of each book in the New Testament and the fulfillment of all the promises of God in the Old Testament from His incarnation to His Second Coming.
I want to break down the name that is being used as the title, so we will have a better understanding of the Person.
Jesus- His personal name—is the Greek equivalent of the Hebrew “Jeshua” (or “Joshua”) which was divinely appointed him.
21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”
Christ- “Anointed One”, a title that acknowledged that He is the expected Messiah of Israel. In the Gospels, Jesus is usually identified as “the Christ” [42 times]. After Pentecost, He is mostly referred to as “Jesus Christ” [179 times]. This joining together of these two names identifies Him as the historic figure with the messianic role that prophets and early Christianity knew that He is.
Son of God- To be the Son of God is to be of the same nature as God. The Son of God is “of God.” Jesus is God made manifest.
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Deity- A god or supreme being, from the Latin word deus, meaning “god.”
In the Jewish belief, Yahweh is God, and there is no other deity. He is the all powerful Creator and Sustainer of the universe.
In this verse we see that not only was the Word with God, but the Word was God. This proves the deity of Jesus Christ as God. Here are some other references in the NT about the fact that Jesus is deity, to act as only God can;
28 And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”
John 8:51–58 (NKJV)
51 Most assuredly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word he shall never see death.”
52 Then the Jews said to Him, “Now we know that You have a demon! Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and You say, ‘If anyone keeps My word he shall never taste death.’
53 Are You greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? And the prophets are dead. Who do You make Yourself out to be?”
54 Jesus answered, “If I honor Myself, My honor is nothing. It is My Father who honors Me, of whom you say that He is your God.
55 Yet you have not known Him, but I know Him. And if I say, ‘I do not know Him,’ I shall be a liar like you; but I do know Him and keep His word.
56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.”
57 Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?”
58 Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.”

5 When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven you.”
6 And some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts,
7 “Why does this Man speak blasphemies like this? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
8 But immediately, when Jesus perceived in His spirit that they reasoned thus within themselves, He said to them, “Why do you reason about these things in your hearts?
9 Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise, take up your bed and walk’?
10 But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins”—He said to the paralytic,
11 “I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.”
16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.
3 who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
8 But to the Son He says: “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom.

The glory of Jesus and of the Father are so wrapped up together that the grace which magnifies the one magnifies the other.

Jesus, though completely God, was also fully human as he took on flesh to fulfill the will of the Father concerning the Sin of man.
He had a human parents that raised Him;
11 And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
He grew up as a normal Jewish boy;
50 But they did not understand the statement which He spoke to them.
51 Then He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them, but His mother kept all these things in her heart.
52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.
He was subject to all the “sinless infirmities” of the human nature
2 And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry.

28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!”
6 Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
35 Jesus wept.
15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.
Jesus did not become identical to us; he did become identified with us.

27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary.
28 And having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!”
29 But when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was.
30 Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.
31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus.
32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David.
33 And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”
34 Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?”
35 And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.
The virgin birth of Jesus Christ is without parallel in human history! Nothing before or after can compare to this event. It is the virgin birth that God became man. One perfect person with two natures; one nature being that of Almighty God, the other being that of a man - man without sin. The union of the two natures became the God-man, Jesus Christ!
The first mention; biological miracle [seed of woman]
15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.”
Two prophesies from Isaiah in the OT; “God with us”; “God gave”
14 Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.
6 For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.
Place of His birth; Bethlehem
2 “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Though you are little among the thousands of Judah, Yet out of you shall come forth to Me The One to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth are from of old, From everlasting.”
1 And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered.
2 This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria.
3 So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city.
4 Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David,
5 to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child.
6 So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered.
7 And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
The Bible teaches the preexistence of the eternal Son of God. The virgin birth confirms what the Bible teaches and preserves the truth that Jesus is fully God and fully man at the same time.
The incarnation of the Son of God was not a diminishing of his deity, but an acquiring of manhood.

Vicarious death- done for another

Substitutional death
21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
Natural death- spirit/soul separated from the body
31 Therefore, because it was the Preparation Day, that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
32 Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who was crucified with Him.
33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs.
34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.
35 And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may believe.
36 For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, “Not one of His bones shall be broken.”
37 And again another Scripture says, “They shall look on Him whom they pierced.”
Unnatural death- Jesus was sinless but was “made sin on our behalf”
5 And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin.
21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
22 “Who committed no sin, Nor was deceit found in His mouth”;
18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit,
Preternatural death- not an afterthought
8 All who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
Supernatural death- unnaturally or extraordinarily great; beyond scientific understanding or the laws of nature

17 “Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again.
6 For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.
7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die.
8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
The death of Jesus was not a proposition for sinners but the plan of salvation.

The Resurrection of Jesus Christ was the doctrine of every disciple, is the faith of every true believer, the courage of every martyr, the theme of every sermon, and the power of evangelism.
1 The former account I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,
2 until the day in which He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen,
3 to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.
Here are 12 infallible proofs of Jesus’ resurrection;
He appeared first to Mary Magdalene [John 20:11-18]
He appeared to women returning from the tomb [Mt. 28:5-10]
He appeared to Peter [Luke 24:34]
To the Emmaus disciples [Luke 24:13-31]
To the apostles without Thomas present [Luke 24:36-43]
To the apostles with Thomas present [John 20:24-29]
Peter and the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias [John 21:1-13]
To over 500 brethren at one time [1 Cor. 15:6]
To James [1 Cor. 5:7]
Again by the 11 apostles [Mt. 28:16-20/ Acts 1:3-12]
By Stephen the first martyr [Acts 7:55]
By Paul on the Damascus road [Acts 9:3-6]
Most of these mentioned died a martyr’s death because of preaching the resurrection of Jesus Christ. They were eyewitnesses to the Resurrection.
Here is some circumstantial evidence of Jesus’ resurrection
Change that took place in the lives of the disciples from fear to unlimited courage. They rejoiced in persecution and chose death rather than denying their faith in the resurrected Christ [Acts 5:40-42, Heb. 11:35]
The early church began to worship on the first day of the week [Sunday] because it was the day Christ arose. [Acts 20:7]
The early Christians carried the message of the Resurrection around the world [Acts 8:1-4]
The empty tomb is proof of His resurrection and those guarding the tomb were paid off to say his disciples stole the body. [Mt. 28:11-15]
The linen cloths left in the tomb. No body would have unwrapped a dead body after 3 days. They were left in the tomb. [John 20:1-10]
The resurrection is God’s “Amen!” to Christ’s statement, “It is finished.”

11 who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.”
The Ascension of Jesus happened 40 days after His resurrection. During this time Jesus was instructing His disciples about the Kingdom of God, sharing the gospel, and looking for His return.
12 But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God,
13 from that time waiting till His enemies are made His footstool.
The Second Coming of Christ is so important it is mentioned more than 300 times in the NT. Here are things about the Second Coming of Christ;
He is coming to judge the nations [Mt. 25:31-46]
He is coming to save Israel [Rom. 11:25-26]
He is coming to sit on the throne of David [Isa. 9:6-7, Luke 1:31-33]
He is coming to bring righteous government to earth [Heb. 1:8]

In his life Christ is an example showing us how to live; in his death, he is a sacrifice satisfying for our sins; in his resurrection, a conqueror; in his ascension, a king; in his intercession a high priest.
