Story about Faith working with works
Theres a story about an old Christian ferryman, who believed in the Lord, he had two businessmen, who crossed together at the same time daily. Their conversation often turned to this matter of faith and works, one of them thinking he could do without works if he had faith, and the other thinking he could do without faith if he had works. The ferryman’s patience grew thin by their frequent and fruitless conversation of “faith” and “works,” because they were using the words in a way that was so different from what they really mean and so destructive of their Scriptural harmony, that at last he felt that he must intervene. He said nothing, but (began working). On one of his oars he painted the word “Faith,” and on the other “Works.” When on his next passage across with the two friendly businessmen, he reached the most dangerous part, he took in “Faith,” and with all his might applied “Works.” The boat went round and round, to the annoyance and fear of the two passengers. “Put out the other oar,” called one of them in a loud and angry voice. “Very well,” said the old man, as he took in “Works” and put out “Faith,” which he used as he had formerly used the other. Of course, this produced the same result, and the two men thought he must be out of his mind. The old man, however, continued his practical demonstration for a little while longer, and then called their attention to the names painted on the oars. “I have tried your way,” he said, “and yours; and you have seen the result. (He’s saying hey I’ve tried with faith alone and I’ve tried with works alone.)
Now, observe my way.” And as he gave a steady pull to each oar the boat at once acknowledged in its forward course the power of their harmonious strokes, and in a few minutes they arrived at their destination. “Thus, it is,” he added, “that faith works by love.” So faith without works, or works without faith, will not suffice to bring us unto our desired haven. But let there be both, (faith and works) and the haven will be safely reached.

We are starting a new series All In

Title: By Faith We Are All In.

The term “All In” gained popularity in the late 90’s during the rise of Texas Hold em a type of poker game where the players would go “all IN” on an hand this meant that they were risking everything
Ian Crouch from the New Yorker writes this “The all-in moment in poker is a thrilling win-or-lose-everything crisis of dramatic clarity: you’ve wagered all you’ve got, giving your fate over to the cards, and you can’t go back out again. Going all in is often a spectacularly bad idea. But in life, it seems, it is all good—the only way to live boldly is to be all in.”
He also adds that Now-a-days people use all in with no real risk attached to it
We see this in politics a lot where someone may be All IN on tax reform, all in on climate change, all in on homelessness.
Jeb Bush - Niners poster
I would like to think if the team was All In they would be willing to give up there pay checks and retire from the sport if they lost.
Alex Honnold - Rock climber who climbs without a rope; he is risking everything when he climbs
On June 3rd, 2017 he became the first person to free solo El Captain it took him 3 hours and 56 minutes 3000 ft high
Today we are going to look at Bartemaeus and how he went all in by his faith and his works.
Turn with me in your bible to Mark 10:46-52 NKJV and this is where the bulk of the message will take place.
Mark 10:46-52 NKJV
46 Now they came to Jericho. As He (meaning Jesus) went out of Jericho with His disciples and a great multitude,
Let’s pause here to set this story up.
Jesus his disciples and a multitude of people are walking.

46 Now they came to Jericho. As He went out of Jericho with His disciples and a great multitude, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the road begging.
47 And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”
This is when his works began.
48 Then many warned him to be quiet;
Isn’t that like the world sometimes we have people tell us to be quiet
our own mind can do the same
Aint nobody care about you
Jesus isn’t concerned with you
48 Then many warned him to be quiet; but he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”

Faith was motivating him to do his work he was all in

He didn’t care what others thought and felt he knew that Jesus was and is the only person that could meet his every need.
49 So Jesus stood still and commanded him to be called.

Our faith in works causes Jesus to stop

His work got Jesus’ attention
What are you doing to get Jesus’ attention?
49 Then they called the blind man, saying to him, “Be of good cheer. Rise, He is calling you.”

Jesus call us

When we are all in, we rise to Jesus’ call.
When we are all in we can here the call
50 And throwing aside his garment, he rose and came to Jesus.
His garment was probably his only means to survival - there are three necessities for us to live and thats water food and shelter. His garment was probably his shelter but he knew once Jesus called him he didn’t need it anymore.
What are you willing to give up (throw aside) to go all in?
Peter and his brother Andrew threw aside their boats and livelihood to be all in for Christ, Jesus said to them follow me and you will be fishers of men. They had faith and they began to work for Jesus
They risked everything
51 So Jesus answered and said to him, “What do you want Me to do for you?”
The blind man said to Him, “Rabboni, (rab-bo-ni) that I may receive my sight.”
52 Then Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your faith has made you well.” And immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus on the road.
He didn’t go back, Bart knew he was with the one who can give him everything
We can also see this with the women who had the issues of blood
Women with issue of blood
NLT Mark 5:25-34 NLT
setup
she had an issue for 12 years
v. 26 says she spent everything she had on doctors only to get worse
27 She had heard about Jesus, so she came up behind him through the crowd and touched his robe. 28 For she thought to herself, “If I can just touch his robe, I will be healed.”
here is the faith she believed if she could just touch His robe she would be healed
29 Immediately the bleeding stopped, and she could feel in her body that she had been healed of her terrible condition.
30 Jesus realized at once that healing power had gone out from him, so he turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my robe?”
31 His disciples said to him, “Look at this crowd pressing around you. How can you ask, ‘Who touched me?’ ”
32 But he kept on looking around to see who had done it. 33 Then the frightened woman, trembling at the realization of what had happened to her, came and fell to her knees in front of him and told him what she had done.
I think it was the Holy Spirit pressing on her heart to come forward and confess and Jesus wants us to confess weather your a believer or not the Lord wants us to confess
34 And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace. Your suffering is over.” [2]
Conclusion - Story of being saved when I was young.
I believed in Christ, I had faith that he died for my sins but my actions didn’t show it. My works didn’t show it.
I rededicated my life and gave something up, I threw aside a garment that was holding me back.
Do you believe He is going to say what He’ll do in His word?
Are your actions aligning with your faith?
Do you have faith in Him as Jehova Jyreh the One who provides as Jehova rafa the one who heals
