Genealogy is FUN!

Has anyone here every studied their genealogy?

God is Sovereign

God is the only one who could orchestrate the birth of Jesus through such a strict lineage requirement.
Today i want to look at some of the requirements that were placed as sign regarding the Messiah:
Born of a Virgin
Isaiah 7:14 CSB
Therefore, the Lord himself will give you a sign: See, the virgin will conceive, have a son, and name him Immanuel.
We already spoke about this one, but I want to reiterate it because This is one of those requirements that is only meetable by GOD.
Jesus was also born in Bethelhem:
Micah 5:2 CSB
Bethlehem Ephrathah, you are small among the clans of Judah; one will come from you to be ruler over Israel for me. His origin is from antiquity, from ancient times.
Luke 3:23 CSB
As he began his ministry, Jesus was about thirty years old and was thought to be the son of Joseph, son of Heli,
Let’s pause real quick: about 30 years old. This may seem random, but this is an interestng thing to note. Levitical priests were able to begin their ministry at 25 years old or more.
Numbers 8:23–26 CSB
The Lord spoke to Moses: “In regard to the Levites: From twenty-five years old or more, a man enters the service in the work at the tent of meeting. But at fifty years old he is to retire from his service in the work and no longer serve. He may assist his brothers to fulfill responsibilities at the tent of meeting, but he must not do the work. This is how you are to deal with the Levites regarding their duties.”
So this age of 30 is important, which is why it is included. Basically we learn here: Jesus was age quailified, and lineage qualified to be a levitical priest.
Luke 3:23–38 CSB
As he began his ministry, Jesus was about thirty years old and was thought to be the son of Joseph, son of Heli, son of Matthat, son of Levi, son of Melchi, son of Jannai, son of Joseph, son of Mattathias, son of Amos, son of Nahum, son of Esli, son of Naggai, son of Maath, son of Mattathias, son of Semein, son of Josech, son of Joda, son of Joanan, son of Rhesa, son of Zerubbabel, son of Shealtiel, son of Neri, son of Melchi, son of Addi, son of Cosam, son of Elmadam, son of Er, son of Joshua, son of Eliezer, son of Jorim, son of Matthat, son of Levi, son of Simeon, son of Judah, son of Joseph, son of Jonam, son of Eliakim, son of Melea, son of Menna, son of Mattatha, son of Nathan, son of David, son of Jesse, son of Obed, son of Boaz, son of Salmon, son of Nahshon, son of Amminadab, son of Ram, son of Hezron, son of Perez, son of Judah, son of Jacob, son of Isaac, son of Abraham, son of Terah, son of Nahor, son of Serug, son of Reu, son of Peleg, son of Eber, son of Shelah, son of Cainan, son of Arphaxad, son of Shem, son of Noah, son of Lamech, son of Methuselah, son of Enoch, son of Jared, son of Mahalalel, son of Cainan, son of Enos, son of Seth, son of Adam, son of God.

First - Genealogy proves who was Jewish and who was not

Deuteronomy 18:15–18 CSB
“The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own brothers. You must listen to him. This is what you requested from the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, ‘Let us not continue to hear the voice of the Lord our God or see this great fire any longer, so that we will not die!’ Then the Lord said to me, ‘They have spoken well. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him.

Second - Genealogy proves who could serve as a priest

Levites only!

So what about when the nation of Israel was thrown into exile, and then returned? How could they tell who was and who was not a Levite? Genealogy!
Nehemiah talks about this and we learn something fascinating: it was not just the CLAIM to be a Levite that work, it had to be proven!
Nehemiah 7:64 CSB
These searched for their entries in the genealogical records, but they could not be found, so they were disqualified from the priesthood.

Third - Genealogy proves who was a son of David

Promise from 2 Sam 7:11-16
2 Samuel 7:11–16 CSB
ever since the day I ordered judges to be over my people Israel. I will give you rest from all your enemies. “ ‘The Lord declares to you: The Lord himself will make a house for you. When your time comes and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up after you your descendant, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He is the one who will build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will discipline him with a rod of men and blows from mortals. But my faithful love will never leave him as it did when I removed it from Saul, whom I removed from before you. Your house and kingdom will endure before me forever, and your throne will be established forever.’ ”
This is when David decided it was time to build the Lord a proper house to dwell in. Instead God sends Samuel to come and tell David: I do not need a house, I have always been moving with and among my people.
I will build you a house. And then God delivers this message.
Someone is coming from YOUR line.
He will build a house for me: the CHURCH!
I will be his father, he will be my son: This is my son, with whom I am well pleased.
His Throne will be established forever!

and who was from the “approved” line

The Messiah could not come from Jeconiah because God declared that no one from Jeconiah’s house would sit on David’s Throne.

If he was a son of David, then he was a son of Jacob:

Numbers 24:17 CSB
I see him, but not now; I perceive him, but not near. A star will come from Jacob, and a scepter will arise from Israel. He will smash the forehead of Moab and strike down all the Shethites.
