Faith in Finances

James 2:14–20 CSB
What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but does not have works? Can such faith save him? If a brother or sister is without clothes and lacks daily food and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, stay warm, and be well fed,” but you don’t give them what the body needs, what good is it? In the same way faith, if it does not have works, is dead by itself. But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without works, and I will show you faith by my works. You believe that God is one. Good! Even the demons believe—and they shudder. Senseless person! Are you willing to learn that faith without works is useless?

What is faith?

James is telling us that faith is more then just words. Many say they are people of faith-
James 2:19 CSB
You believe that God is one. Good! Even the demons believe—and they shudder.
Even the demon believer- yet they don’t do the things of God , in fact they do counter efforts.
James says James 2:17
James 2:17 CSB
In the same way faith, if it does not have works, is dead by itself.
and again
James 2:20 CSB
Senseless person! Are you willing to learn that faith without works is useless?
What is faith? pistis (πίστις, 4102), to believe to the extent of complete trust and reliance—‘to believe in, to have confidence in, to have faith in, to trust, faith, trust.’
Louw, Johannes P., and Eugene Albert Nida. 1996. In Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament: Based on Semantic Domains,

What Does this have to Do with the Sermon on the Mount?

Jesus says, “Matthew 7:24
Matthew 7:24 (CSB)
“Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
Jesus calls His listeners not to Just hear, but to act
Why? Because faith without actions (Works) is dead!

What we believe will be evident in our lives- How we live

James 2:18 CSB
But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without works, and I will show you faith by my works.
What does faith look like?
it is more then going to church
it is more then saying a quick prayer
it is more then simply reading the bible
Faith is a way of live
2 Corinthians 5:7 CSB
For we walk by faith, not by sight.
The way we judge situation is based on our faith “to believe to the extent of complete trust and reliance”- in God
When we read Hebrews 11 by faith is the means through which the men and women of the bible lived- They believed and they acted!
Faith also goes hand and hand with provision!
Matthew 6:33 CSB
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you.
Right after telling His listeners not to worry because God cares for them, Jesus tells them to live a certain way. With the Kingdom being the highest priority.
God can be trusted! He is faithful , we need to level up our faith to the point that we respond to what He calls us to do- Even if it looks ridiculous because He works it all together for our good and His glory!
1 Kings 17:1–16 (CSB)
Now Elijah the Tishbite, from the Gilead settlers, said to Ahab, “As the Lord God of Israel lives, in whose presence I stand, there will be no dew or rain during these years except by my command!”
Then the word of the Lord came to him: “Leave here, turn eastward, and hide at the Wadi Cherith where it enters the Jordan. You are to drink from the wadi. I have commanded the ravens to provide for you there.”
So he proceeded to do what the Lord commanded. Elijah left and lived at the Wadi Cherith where it enters the Jordan. The ravens kept bringing him bread and meat in the morning and in the evening, and he would drink from the wadi. After a while, the wadi dried up because there had been no rain in the land.
Then the word of the Lord came to him: “Get up, go to Zarephath that belongs to Sidon and stay there. Look, I have commanded a woman who is a widow to provide for you there.” So Elijah got up and went to Zarephath. When he arrived at the city gate, there was a widow gathering wood. Elijah called to her and said, “Please bring me a little water in a cup and let me drink.” As she went to get it, he called to her and said, “Please bring me a piece of bread in your hand.”
But she said, “As the Lord your God lives, I don’t have anything baked—only a handful of flour in the jar and a bit of oil in the jug. Just now, I am gathering a couple of sticks in order to go prepare it for myself and my son so we can eat it and die.”
Then Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid; go and do as you have said. But first make me a small loaf from it and bring it out to me. Afterward, you may make some for yourself and your son, for this is what the Lord God of Israel says, ‘The flour jar will not become empty and the oil jug will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the surface of the land.’ ”
So she proceeded to do according to the word of Elijah. Then the woman, Elijah, and her household ate for many days. The flour jar did not become empty, and the oil jug did not run dry, according to the word of the Lord he had spoken through Elijah.

What would have happened if she did act on God’s Word?

This question should be one we ask ourselves?
God has divine plans- they are good plans
We access them through faith
Jeremiah 29:11 CSB
For I know the plans I have for you”—this is the Lord’s declaration—“plans for your well-being, not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.
Jesus Proclaim a message of salvation that brought Favor From God- Faith grabs ahold of the message and believes, and lives according to that.
