Psalm 63:5–8 ESV
My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food, and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips, when I remember you upon my bed, and meditate on you in the watches of the night; for you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy. Matthew 5:17–20 ESV
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

The Righteousness of the Kingdom

Matthew 5:17 ESV
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
Some believed the Messiah would erradicate:
the sacrifical or physical laws (e.g. wearing wool etc) or
some, all the laws of the Tumuld and establish a new Kingdom and new laws or
Some, and be destructive revolutionist giving victory and command of their enemies, breaking ties with the past
Some ultimately presented a false view of Jesus’ teachings
John 5:18 ESV
This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.
Matthew 26:59–61 ESV
Now the chief priests and the whole council were seeking false testimony against Jesus that they might put him to death, but they found none, though many false witnesses came forward. At last two came forward and said, “This man said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to rebuild it in three days.’ ”

Matthew 5:17 ESV
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
Scribes & Pharasies demanded good works, so did Jesus
They held Moses in high regard, so did Jesus
The righteousness Jesus proclaimed was not a novelty
Jesus presents
the concept that without him the Old Testament was incomplete and unfulfilled
justification by grace through faith was firmly rooted in the old testament
Romans 3:21 ESV
But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it—
Romans 7:7 ESV
What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.”
Galatians 3:10 ESV
For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.”

Matthew 5:17 ESV
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
Rather Jesus bestowed greater honour on “the law or the prophets”
They regarding the works of the law as the way to salvation and therefore dismissing the old testament
According to the beatitudes these people, convicted of their spiritual poverty, had mournfully confessed their sins and had received from God the righteousness of imputation and impartation. Hendriksen
Good works are gratitude for salvation already received
Thus the law was in principal being fulfilled, as were the prophets, in which the demand of the law was affirmed
Jesus was not only speaking of the fulfilment through these new believers but through what Jesus came to fulfil the Messianic Mission
Jesus would stand out as a Chief Prophet
Deuteronomy 18:18 ESV
I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. And I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him.
Jesus through his active and passive obedience would satisfy the demand of the law as the people’s sympathetic high priest
Psalm 40:6–7 ESV
In sacrifice and offering you have not delighted, but you have given me an open ear. Burnt offering and sin offering you have not required. Then I said, “Behold, I have come; in the scroll of the book it is written of me:
Jeremiah 23:6 ESV
In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’
Jesus will fulfil exclusively through his royal rule deliverying his people from the power of the enemy and holding sway over their lives as their eternal king
2 Samuel 7:12–13 ESV
When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.

Matthew 5:17 ESV
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
Jesus does not restrict his fulfilment but in all aspects fulfils, even the sacrifical system
Law or the prophets, gives emphasis of the breadth of meaning
“I have come” - Jesus lays claim to his Messianic mission
Matthew 5:18 ESV
For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.
For Truely [Verily Amen]
consider as trustworthy, believe
Jesus affirms his complete loyalty to the the sacred oracles
Not an iota or dot [jot or tittle]
smallest letter
small projection, a little hook that distinguishes one hebrew letter from another
English equivalent: not a ‘t’ will remain uncrossed and not an ‘i’ undotted
As Jesus was speaking...
some parts had been fulfilled
some parts being fulfilled
others soon to be fulfilled (inc. crucifixion and resurrection)
others will be fulfilled later (ascension, penticost and finally at Christ’s return in glory)

Matthew The Righteousness of the Kingdom

In the new heaven and earth “the law” as a written book will no longer be necessary. In fact, the written Bible—Old and New Testament—will have become superfluous. Until that time arrives, however, nothing whatever will remain lacking as to fulfilment. God’s program with respect to Christ, the church, mankind in general, and the universe, will be carried out in full

Matthew 5:19 ESV
Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
All is by Grace and nothing is earned by the citizen of the Kingdom
Yet his position or rank in that kingdom will depend on and be commensurate with his respect for God’s Holy Law
Rabbis divided the law int 613 commandments, they considered 248 to be positive and 365 negative. Debating which is heavier and lighter commandments.
Jesus, makes it clear that what he is about to preach on must be kept, and nothing annulled or cancelled.
whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven”
whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven”
Salvation is not only by grace and through faith, it is also according to works.
Ecclesiastes 12:14 ESV
For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil.
Romans 2:16 ESV
on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus.
2 Corinthians 5:10 ESV
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.
Revelation 20:12–13 ESV
And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done.
Matthew 5:20 ESV
For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
Jesus is about to contrast the false and true interpretation of the commands of God (called The Six Antitheses)
You Shall Not Kill
Adultery
Divorce
Oaths
Retaliation
Love your Neighbour
Even Chapters 6 & 7 will reflect the indicated contrast
The righteousness demanded by Jesus is nothing less that complete conformity with God’s Holy Law
Such righteousness means that the heart not only the outward deed is right, as the holy God himself views it
The scribes and pharisees accepted a rightouness of outward compliance
Scribes (profession) & pharasees (sect)
Scribes were the acknowledgfed expounders and teachers of the old testament
Pharisees were those who tried very hard to make everyone believe that they were adhereing to this teaching
Two kinds of righteousness
scribes and pharisees: fails to satisfy the heart
It is formal, external and shallow.
based on reasoning that is deceptive, misleading and meerly “clever”
proceeds from mind that is not at rest
Falls short of perfection
self-righteous: designed to impress and proud
Jesus: satisfies the heart
genuine, internal and deeply rooted
honest, reliable and sound
proceeds from mind that has found rest
It is complete
righteous: unpretentious and humble
Matthew 11:28 ESV
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
example...
Matthew 15:3–6 ESV
He answered them, “And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? For God commanded, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ But you say, ‘If anyone tells his father or his mother, “What you would have gained from me is given to God,” he need not honor his father.’ So for the sake of your tradition you have made void the word of God.
