Psalm 86:11 (ESV) — 11 Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name.

Reverential fear comes from knowing the only true God and his son, Jesus Christ (see John 17:3). It was called filial fear in the past. “Filial fear is a Spirit-wrought grace put into the heart from above in order that we may stay close to our Father in heaven. This type of fear, according to Thomas Manton, consists in a ‘high esteem of God, of his majesty, glory, power, and in the sense and continual thoughts of his presence. And then a loathness to sin against God, or to offend in his sight, to do anything that is unseemly when God is a looker-on’. Our view of God will affect how we act in his presence. If we have low thoughts of him, we will have low thoughts of pleasing him.” The Pilgrim’s Regress by Mark Jones p. 79

In…86:11b, David perceptively responds to the fact that there are parts of his heart that are attracted to other ways. He therefore prays that God would unite his heart. He specifically wants his heart united that he might fear God’s name… David recognizes that those parts of his heart that desire other ways do not fear God. To transgress God’s prohibitions and commands is to assert a fearless boldness to stand against God’s authority despite his warnings of judgment. David wants no part of his heart to hold out in rebellion against the Lord.[1]
