The Passion of the Christ passage

John 19:17–18 NASB95
17 They took Jesus, therefore, and He went out, bearing His own cross, to the place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha. 18 There they crucified Him, and with Him two other men, one on either side, and Jesus in between.
John 19:19–20 NASB95
19 Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It was written, “JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS.” 20 Therefore many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Latin and in Greek.
John 19:21–22 NASB95
21 So the chief priests of the Jews were saying to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews’; but that He said, ‘I am King of the Jews.’ ” 22 Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.”
John 19:23–24 NASB95
23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His outer garments and made four parts, a part to every soldier and also the tunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece. 24 So they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, to decide whose it shall be”; this was to fulfill the Scripture: “They divided My outer garments among them, and for My clothing they cast lots.”
John 19:25–26 NASB95
25 Therefore the soldiers did these things. But standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son!”
John 19:27–28 NASB95
27 Then He said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” From that hour the disciple took her into his own household. 28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, said, “I am thirsty.”
John 19:29–30 NASB95
29 A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so they put a sponge full of the sour wine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth. 30 Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.

Facts, interesting points on crucifixion

John 19:17–18 NKJV
17 And He, bearing His cross, went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha, 18 where they crucified Him, and two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the center.
Roman custom was the condemned would carry their own cross.
Cross beam put on them by the Romans
This was done in a very public way in a public procession to draw attention to the crime and the fate of the condemned.
Crucifixion was not the invention of the Romans, but of the Persians, but it was said the Romans “perfected it” - Dods
Purpose of crucifixion is it was designed to make the victim die publically, slowly, with great pain and humiliation. This was the form of death God ordained for Jesus to die, and the death that He submitted to in the will of God.” -Lightfoot
The gospels do not go into details about the crucifixion, you may wonder why.
The readers were aware of the practice so there was no need.
The writers do not want to use language to stir emotions, but just to present the facts
Finally it was said that “The greater suffering of Jesus was inward and spiritual; even greater that His outward and physical suffering.”
Jesus was nailed between two others. He was in the center. I love what Guzik had to say on this (in summary).
Jesus was centered among humanity. From incarnation til death He identified with humanity, for he lived as one of us.
Jesus was centered among sinful men.
Jesus was centered among confusion. Mt27:46-49 says that when Jesus cried out in agony to the Father the crowd did not understand what He was saying
Jesus was centered between believing and rejecting (the two thieves)
Jesus was centered between saved and perishing (two thieves)
Jesus was centered between God and man- he took our punishment for our sin, he was both the priest and the offering
Jesus was centered in all God’s history and work. Jesus was God’s scheme of redemption, where victory was purchased on the cross!
(Transition) - Jesus crucifixion is the center of humanity, and needs to be remembered in the center of our lives without it we have no salvation, with it was have eternal life!

Pilates proclamation

the written proclamation
(Below not on screen, but can have someone read from another version, time permitting)
John 19:19–22 NASB95
19 Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It was written, “JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS.” 20 Therefore many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Latin and in Greek. 21 So the chief priests of the Jews were saying to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews’; but that He said, ‘I am King of the Jews.’ ” 22 Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.”
The written proclamation: Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews
Interesting fact you may not know is that it was common practice that the condemned person to be crucified would have the sign, the proclamation hung around their neck on the way to the cross, so everyone would know, then it would be nailed above the head. (ref: Tenney, Dods, not quoted but summarized)
Even in death Jesus was humbled and identified with the outcast (Nazareth). He was also recognized as King.
Dod’s in short says: Kings of this world take the throne by someone dying, Christ took His kingship/throne by He dying on the cross.
Jesus crime stated: “King of the Jews.” and he hung among those with crimes of being thieves.
The message in Latin -for the Romans who gloried in dominion and power
The message in Hebrew - For the Jews who gloried in the law
The message in Greek - for the Grecians who gloried in wisdom
Jews rebelled at the title, wanting in changed due to their own unbelief.
This concept of rebellion and wanted things changed, can you see that in the culture today?
What is written, is written, Pilate finds courage to stand his ground (ref: Jn18:37).
Pilate finally agrees with what it says in Jn18:37.
John 18:37 NKJV
37 Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.”

Prophesy fulfilled

John 19:23–24 ESV
23 When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom, 24 so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture which says, “They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” So the soldiers did these things,
Some facts: Crucifixions were overlooked by Romans, to keep the peace and to make sure the condemned dies
Some facts: The condemned normally is crucified naked, but due to Jewish sensitivities, Jesus was not executed completely naked.
They divided his garments fulfilling the prophesy of (Ps22:18)
Psalm 22:18 NASB95
18 They divide my garments among them, And for my clothing they cast lots.
Kuzik: “He let go of everything, even his last bit of lothing, becoming completely poor for us that we could become completely rich in Him (consider 2Cor8:9)
2 Corinthians 8:9 NASB95
9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich.
One woven piece, the seamless tunic representing Jesus Priesthood to be (ref: Exo28:31-32) you can see the direction for the priestly garments
Exodus 28:31–32 NASB95
31 “You shall make the robe of the ephod all of blue. 32 “There shall be an opening at its top in the middle of it; around its opening there shall be a binding of woven work, like the opening of a coat of mail, so that it will not be torn.
The bloodied Christ:
Picture this before we close
The beating
The suffering
The condemnation
The humiliation
The crowd
The soldiers at his feet gambling for his clothes
The nakedness so that you could be clothed in righteousness!
Christ lived, Christ suffered, Christ died so that you may live! (Prayer) (Close)
