When Youth Pastor Stephen Spencer asked the youth group to write down their life goals, he had no idea how significant the words would be. During a regular Friday evening meeting, Spencer challenged the young people to write down three life goals. He joined in the activity and wrote his goals on a yellow flower shaped piece of paper. Spencer said he wanted to be a good father and husband, wanted to have a ministry that encouraged people to follow God and he wanted to make awesome music. Just a few hours after that meeting, Spencer was killed in an accident while exploring the rooftop of an abandoned building with friends. His mother, Rosanne, said she will cherish the paper because it says so much about who her son was. She characterized her son as an adventurer and said he loved working with the church and youth. She said her faith was sustaining her during the hard time and added that her son was already working to fulfill those life goals. She said, “Those kids hung around him almost 24 hours a day. He changed their lives, he was giving them direction and he kept them out of trouble.”—Jim L. Wilson and Jim Sandell
