Setting the stage for final act

Surrendered
Jesus surrendered Himself
Succumb
The crowd, the questioning
Suffered
The scourging, the ridiculing
Sacrificed
Went to the cross as a criminal that there was no guilt found in.
Went to the cross willingly for our sins to fulfill His purpose.
Take a few minutes and think of all that Jesus endured up to this point. Jesus set the example of picking up the cross, not just this day, but each day of his ministry. Are we setting the stage for others to do the same by our life today as a Christian?
More on the setting.
Time of the Passover, many pilgrims, visitors (said maybe 1-million or more total there)
Place of the crucifixion is outside the city (Golgatha/Calvary) along a very popular path into the city so it would have been very public crucifixion.
There on the cross hangs a well known teacher, one with authority, the talk of the crowds, between two thieves
We know there are 4-soldiers at the cross (divided garments in four).
Drawing in from outside Gospel of John
passerby’s
Chief Priests and scribes
Mark 15:29–30 NASB95
29 Those passing by were hurling abuse at Him, wagging their heads, and saying, “Ha! You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, 30 save Yourself, and come down from the cross!”
Mark 15:31–32 NASB95
31 In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes, were mocking Him among themselves and saying, “He saved others; He cannot save Himself. 32 “Let this Christ, the King of Israel, now come down from the cross, so that we may see and believe!” Those who were crucified with Him were also insulting Him.
One commentator Wiersbe, refers to the imagary of Ps22 animals as to those who persecuted the LOrd (Ps22:12, 13, 16)
Psalm 22:12–13 NASB95
12 Many bulls have surrounded me; Strong bulls of Bashan have encircled me. 13 They open wide their mouth at me, As a ravening and a roaring lion.
Psalm 22:16 NASB95
16 For dogs have surrounded me; A band of evildoers has encompassed me; They pierced my hands and my feet.
“When men reject the Lord, they become like animals” -Wiersbe
(Transition): This leads us to our passage tonight, and yes, we will need to draw from the other gospels too to give a clearer picture of the witnesses and the death.

The Witnesses

John 19:25–26 NASB95
25 Therefore the soldiers did these things. But standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son!”
John 19:27 NASB95
27 Then He said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” From that hour the disciple took her into his own household.
Anything stick out to you in these verses?
We have more details about who was by the cross, who are they (v.25)?
Mary, His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, Mary of Magdalene.
Whom does Jesus address from the cross (v.26)?
His mother, and the disciple in whom He loved
Jesus gave direction (vv.26-27), what was the results of the given direction (v.27)?
He (the disciple in which he loved) took her into his own household from that hour.
The women at the cross
Jesus identified 4-women at the cross; at a distance according to (Mt27:55-56; Mk15:40-41)
(below not on screen, but turn there)
Matthew 27:55–56 NASB95
55 Many women were there looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee while ministering to Him. 56 Among them was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
and (also not on the screen)
Mark 15:40–41 NASB95
40 There were also some women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the Less and Joses, and Salome. 41 When He was in Galilee, they used to follow Him and minister to Him; and there were many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.
Mary the mother of Jesus
Mary of Magdalene who Jesus delivered seven spirit (Lk8:2)
Salome, Mary’s sister (who is mother to James/John)
Mary, the wife of Clopas
So, Jesus, looking out sees this, oh what He must have felt these ministering women there, in the midst of all the ridicule going on, the suffering, the shame, the humiliation, yet they were there watching. Along with the disciple in which Jesus loved.
Scripture is being fulfilled with Mary (LK2:35) she is experiencing the sword. No one else could have felt the pain, agony she was feeling at this moment.
Luke 2:35 NASB95
35 and a sword will pierce even your own soul—to the end that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.”
Jesus sees then instructs
John, in a very humble way refers to himself in the gospel (one of four times) not drawing attention to himself but still the focus is on Christ.
John will later testify that he was there at the cross (Jn19:35) we will get to that later.
Instructions to Mary: Behold your son (v.26)
Even from the cross, Christ thought of others, first by going to the cross, second by calling for care for his mother.
No disrespect as some claim by calling her woman, it is as common as “maam” or “Sir” today, it was a respect thing, just as it was at the wedding in Cana.
Instructions to the disciple: Behold your mother (v.26)
Interesting there was no specific instructions given, love what Spurgeon had to say on this.
“There was no specific direction given to John to entertain Mary. It was quiet enough for the Lord to call his attention to her by saying ‘behold thy mother.’ How I wish we were always in such a state of heart that we did not need specific precepts, a hint would suffice.”
Also interesting that the care of Mary was given to John, not to the Jesus half siblings (ref: Mt12:46-47, 13:55-56; Jn2:12, 7:3-10).
We will not turn to those tonight.
Jesus left the care to a person of belief and action, a disciple who left everything to follow Him.
One commentator made some subjection’s to consider
Maybe Jesus did this to emphasize that our relationships in Him and the kingdom are more important than those of blood.
Perhaps It was to honor the one disciple whom we know was at the cross, who was courageous enough to be there.
Maybe, it was because His siblings did not follow Him as disciples during His earthly ministry. Jesus wanted to entrust His mother to a true believer.
Could it be that Jesus did this knowing that John would be the only disciple to die a natural death and would be there for the care of his mother no matter the time?
(Transition) - you know originally I was going to do the crucifixion in one message and then found out it was way to long, so needed to make it into two, surprise, surprise, so now may we press on with the death?

The Death of the Christ

John 19:28–29 NASB95
28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, said, “I am thirsty.” 29 A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so they put a sponge full of the sour wine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth.
John 19:30 NASB95
30 Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.
Anything stand out to you in these verses?
Objectively what was accomplished on the cross (v.28)?
All things were acomplished
What was Jesus cry for (v.29)?
Thirst, He was thirsty
Jesus final cry, final words before bowing his head and giving up His spirit was (v.30)?
It is finished!
Jesus purpose was fulfilled, accomplished, the hour had come and now was for there was a time when it was not yet. (Jn19:30; Lk12:50; Jn2:4; also see 2Cor5:21)
Luke 12:50 NASB95
50 “But I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished!
and then
John 2:4 NASB95
4 And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come.”
For this is the moment, Jesus became sin for us
2 Corinthians 5:21 NASB95
21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
Before giving up his spirit, he had one more saying, but first needed to wet his dry parched lips.
Barclay: “the very mention of hyssop would take the thoughts of any Jew back to the saving blood of the Passover Lamb.”
This is not with gall the numbing agent he denied before (Mk15:23); but sour, diluted wine so the one final announcement could be made. “IT IS FINISHED.”
Finished; Greek word “tetelestai”
Finished was God’s eternal purpose on the cross
The finished work, the completed work, the debt is completed .
Guzik: “At some point before He died, before the veil was torn in two, before He cried out it is finished, an awesome spiritual transaction took place. God the Father laid upon God the Son all the guilt and wrath our sin deserved, and He bore it in Himself perfectly, totally satisfying the wrath of God for us.”
Spurgeon regarding the last cry: “It was a Conqueror’s cry: it was uttered with a loud voice. There is nothing of anguish about it, there is no wailing in it. It is the cry of One who has completed a tremendous labor.”
Finished were the types, promises, prophesies
Finished were the sacrifices and ceremonies of the priesthood
Finished was perfect obedience to the will of the Father
Finished was the need for satisfaction of God’s wrath
Finished was Satan’s power, for sin and death are overcome
One more quote before we close, I had to pick one for there were many.
“Has he finished his work for me? Then I must get to work for him, and I must persevere until I finish my work too; not to save myself, for that is all done, but because I am saved!” (Spurgeon)
