He went His way (Lk4:30)

Jesus had returned to Galilee (Lk4:14)
Jesus spoke, then taught in Galilee (Lk4:17-27)
People were filled with rage and drove him out to kill him (Lk4:28-29)
Jesus went His way (Lk4:30)
Luke 4:30 NASB95
30 But passing through their midst, He went His way.
They had wanted signs, wonders like He had done in Capernaum before (Lk4:23)
They got a sign, wonder when He passed through their midst
(Transition) this leads us to our passage today; I will break it into two parts

Jesus in the synagogue in Capernaum

Luke 4:31–32 NASB95
31 And He came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and He was teaching them on the Sabbath; 32 and they were amazed at His teaching, for His message was with authority.
Luke 4:33–34 NASB95
33 In the synagogue there was a man possessed by the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, 34 “Let us alone! What business do we have with each other, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”
Luke 4:35–36 NASB95
35 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in the midst of the people, he came out of him without doing him any harm. 36 And amazement came upon them all, and they began talking with one another saying, “What is this message? For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits and they come out.”
Luke 4:37 NASB95
37 And the report about Him was spreading into every locality in the surrounding district.
What do you notice, what sticks out to you in this portion of scripture?
Jesus came down to Capernaum (v.31) from where? (you will need to look back on this, I know you can do it).
He came from Nazareth (4:16)
What do you learn about Jesus teaching (v.32)?
It was on the Sabbath, the people were amazed, His message was with authority
What things can you know about the man who was possessed (vv.33-34)?
He was in the synagogue, the demon cried out with loud voice.
Knew who Jesus was (Jesus of Nazareth, the holy One God).
Thought knew why Jesus was there, to destroy them.
Doing good, keep going, what do you learn from Jesus rebuking the spirit (vv.35-36)?
He told him (them) to be quiet- and he was.
He told him (them) to come out - and he (they) did
The people were amazed and saw the authority and the power of Jesus
Where did word spread after the amazement (v.37)?
Spreading into every locality in the surrounding district.
Jesus left home, and now sets up his ministry hub in Capernaum (see Mt4:13-16)
Matthew 4:13–14 NASB95
13 and leaving Nazareth, He came and settled in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. 14 This was to fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet:
Matthew 4:15–16 NASB95
15 The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles16 The people who were sitting in darkness saw a great Light, And those who were sitting in the land and shadow of death, Upon them a Light dawned.”
Jesus is the promised light, and it will be from here that he will start to draw disciples (Peter, Andrew, James, and John) all come from Galilee
People were astonished, amazed at His teaching that was one with/having authority (Lk4:32; see Mt7:28-29; Jm4:7)
Matthew 7:28–29 NASB95
28 When Jesus had finished these words, the crowds were amazed at His teaching; 29 for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as their scribes.
Not just having authority like the scribes, but one with authority.
Jesus does not only speak with authority, but demonstrates the authority with the demon possessed man.
Jesus did not have a deliverance ministry, never taught deliverance seminars, but as Courson says “where Jesus is, the demons suddenly get restless, and they expose themselves.”
Yes there are demons, we cannot be naive to think not. We need to be Christ focused and not demon obsessed looking for demons in everything. You focus on the Light, on Christ, He will do the exposing and expelling.
Your part submit and resist (Jm4:7)
James 4:7 NASB95
7 Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
We do not know the reason the demon possessed man was in synagogue, but we know what happens. He speaks out, he knows who Jesus is, but Jesus does not want him to speak. Think of (Jm2:19)
James 2:19 NKJV
19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble!
The demons believed that the advent of God would be the end of the demonic control. Hence their destruction.
Jesus speaks the word, it is powerful and effective and accomplishes its purpose. Jesus has authority in physical and the spiritual realm.
(transition) an unlikely meeting, unlikely person, unlikely place, with amazing result and this leads us to more ministry work.

More healings

Luke 4:38–39 NASB95
38 Then He got up and left the synagogue, and entered Simon’s home. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Him to help her. 39 And standing over her, He rebuked the fever, and it left her; and she immediately got up and waited on them.
Luke 4:40–41 NASB95
40 While the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to Him; and laying His hands on each one of them, He was healing them. 41 Demons also were coming out of many, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But rebuking them, He would not allow them to speak, because they knew Him to be the Christ.
Luke 4:42–44 NASB95
42 When day came, Jesus left and went to a secluded place; and the crowds were searching for Him, and came to Him and tried to keep Him from going away from them. 43 But He said to them, “I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, for I was sent for this purpose.” 44 So He kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.
Anything stick out to you in this portion of scripture?
Jesus went to Simon (Peter’s) home and did what (vv.38-39)?
He entered, He stood over, He rebuked the fever
Now, look at (vv.40-41), what did Jesus do here?
He laid hands, He healed, He rebuked the demons to keep from speaking
When a new day came, what did Jesus do (vv.42-43)?
Went off to secluded place, told them must preach the kingdom in other cities for this is why He came, this was His purpose.
Did Jesus stay on mission, on His purpose (v.44)?
Yes, in the synagogues of Judea
After the public miracle, comes a private one. Jesus was not a performer, he was a perfecter, a healer of all.
We do know that Simon Peter was married (also see 1Cor9:5)
Jesus stood over her and rebuked the fever, was there a spiritual element to her physical ailment?
The fever left, she was strengthened, she then served
At the setting sun, the end of the Sabbath, people brought the sick to Jesus
Jesus now does not speak to the diseases, but lays hands on the sick, and speaks to the demons to shut their mouths, because of what they knew about Him.
The kingdom must be preached, the preaching, teaching ministry of Jesus continues in the synagogues in Judea, after a time of seclusion. Jesus stayed to mission, to purpose, set’s a great example for us.
Solitude, a short devotional
Solitude, Jesus went off to a secluded place, a place of solitude.
I was studying and came to a great devotional built around (v.42) let me give you a few things from it.
Solitude, A.W. Tozar said “If a man wants to be used by God, he cannot spend all of his time with people.” - he got it that we need to get alone, to get along.
Solitude, time and time again you can read of scripture of Jesus going off to a secluded place, a place of solitude to be alone with the Father.
For man today we can learn much in a place of solitude
Putting all things aside, we can gain a better realization of ourselves. Come face to face with our faith, our fears, our failures and give them to the Father
We can learn after our failures and fears to have more compassion for others and more forgiveness of others after a time of solitude.
A time of solitude can be transforming to you as you sit and think, ponder, meditate on the Lord and His great work for you and in you that it will impact how you act in the world around you and will impact the world for Jesus.
It was in the wilderness the word of God came to John the Baptizer
It was in the desert that Moses was called to lead Israel out of Egypt
It was after 40-days in the wilderness that Jesus started His public ministry
It is in solitude that we learn to attune to the still small voice of the Lord.
It is in solitude that you can reflect and build on your faith, your personal faith, personal relationship with a very personal Jesus and the Father in heaven. It prepares you for what He has for you.
In 1Jn1:1-3, it was personal, John expresses what he had heard, seen, looked up, handled, and declared with purpose, that you may have fellowship. It was personal, personal faith, personal conviction, personal experience lead to personal proclamation of Jesus who was from the beginning.
May we learn to be people who select solitude so to be able to share the Christ!
(Summary)
Jesus was all about purpose, staying on task, even if it was unpopular and people wanted to kill him
May we learn to know our task, stay on task, even when it is unpopular. Start with getting alone, a secluded place, a place of solitude to get right with God then come out and serve God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength!
