Introduction

For the next six weeks we will look at OT passages that foreshadow the coming or the work of Jesus. We see the evidence for Jesus at the very beginning of the Word. “you search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal; it is these that testify of about me” (Jn 5:39).
Genesis 1:1 (NASB95)
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
We already see Jesus even in the first sentence of the very ancient Word of God.
John 1:3 (NASB95)
All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
1 Corinthians 8:6 (NASB95)
yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom are all things and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him.
Colossians 1:16 (NASB95)
For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him.
Hebrews 1:2 (NASB95)
in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world.
We see Jesus at the very beginning of history even predating time and space but primarily at the beginning of the OT in the book of Genesis. Also we already find an established plan of salvation already worked out early in the pages of history. We see the gospel of Jesus Christ right at the moment of the Fall. We will see that right from the moment of man’s biggest booboo God had already made provisions to clean it up.
We will studying today the Gospel at the Fall of Man as shown through Genesis 3:1-15… although that is our end we will not neglect the morsels or nuggets of truth that we will undoubtedly encounter through our journey. Pray

Setting the Stage

Inherent in good news is bad news. Indeed, bad news often precedes good news, and that bad news is what makes the good news so very good.
In the case of mankind we first have good news, followed by the worst news possible and after that the greatest of all news.
The God news is that God begins to create. The first chapter of Genesis is happy enough as God begins to create. It is good news because God began to create.
Chapter one… the creation of light, sun, moon, stars, animals. at the end of every item God looks and declares that what he has made is good. Even after the creation of everything He says that all he had made was very good.
In Chapter two we get a more detailed explanation to the creation of man, the planting of the garden and the fashioning of isha, woman because she was taken out of ish man.
man is given dominion over all of creation and given one rule, and one rule only.
Genesis 2:16–17 (NASB95)
The Lord God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.”
But Adam and his wife are living in blissful happiness communing with God and with each other in a utopian fellowship and commonality that is completely unknown to us.
With this backdrop lets go to our text and see what the Word of the Lord says,

The Text

The Attack

Genesis 3:1 (NASB95)
Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Indeed, has God said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?”
The Serpent is identified as the devil by John in Revelation 12:9 and 20:2. Paul also identified this creature as the embodiment of Satan in 2 Cor 11:3.
The snake was crafty ʿā·rûm (also means cunning, clever, shrewd, sensible). same word in Proverbs 12:16 is translated as prudent which is a good thing, but in this case it is a bad thing because it is manipulative prudence.
The serpent itself as one of the creatures that God has created was good. But the creature had within its instinctual qualities that made it a very cautious, and sophisticated animals. There are animals today that would fit that bill. Dolphins are said to be able to grasp various numerical concepts. The groundhog seems to know when the temperature has reached a place where it is safe to go outside its borrow.
Satan used the animals very nature to his advantage and disguised himself in it.
The tempter came disguised. A talking snake may not have been out of the question for the first couple who where still exploring the wonders of the world and who had access to heaven in ways we cannot even imagine. Satan, says Paul in 2 cor 11:14 can disguise himself as an angel of light.
Eve becomes (at least initially the object of the devil’s attack). He recognizes in her a need for covering which is imbedded in the way she was created.
1 Peter 3:7 (NASB95)
You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with someone weaker, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.
For the heathen, the disparity in the sexes was and has been the cause of the degradation of woman among the heathen. However, in Christianity, the disparity makes it the ground for tender consideration. God made us this way to His honor and His glory.
Husbands, she must be covered through protection, provision, and strength all of which Adam as we will soon see failed to provide.
And then consider the question
Indeed has God said.
In effect Satan is saying “Is it true that God has restricted you from the delights of this place? These are not the actions of one who is truly good and kind. There must be some mistake”
He insinuated doubt as to her understanding of God’s word. This begins to lead her into reinterpreting or finding the supposed true interpretation of God’s will or worst yet, God’s character.
This is the same tactic Satan has used and is using… look at what Paul had to contend with concerning the Galatians:
Galatians 1:6–8 (NASB95)
I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel; which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed!

The Response

Genesis 3:2–3 (NASB95)
The woman said to the serpent, “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.’ ”
Omits the divine name while reciting the liberties and she omits the vastness of the liberties contained in the word “all” which indicates.
She remembers the divine name “Elohim” said when zeroing on the restraint.
She hammers on the unfairness of God by an addition not given to the original commandment “or touch it”.
Her love/ confidence in God begins to waver.
She also weakened the penalty… “les we die” rather that “you will surely die.”
After Satan heard this, he was embolden to go straight for the jugular (lion). He blatantly negated the penalty of death that God had given:
Genesis 3:4–5 (NASB95)
The serpent said to the woman, “You surely will not die! “For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
A misquote from Scripture based on your own distrust or desires are an opened door. It is precisely what Satan was fishing, waiting for. He used the same tactic on Jesus but failed.
He regurgitates Gods actual words verbatim with the exception of adding the word “not”
Table:
Satan’s Temptation of Eve and of Jesus
Temptation Gen 3. Mat 4.
physical appetite You may eat from any tree (changing stones to bread)
Personal Gain You will not die (will not hurt your foot)
Power and glory You will be like God (have all the kingdoms)
Satans temptations today usually falls within one of these three categories:
1 John 2:16 (NASB95)
For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.
At any rate, the lie “you will not surely die” is what led to her spiritual death. In John the 8th chapter Jesus emphatically calls Satan a liar and a murderer from the beginning.
The lie itself was that you could sin and get away with it. But the penalty for sin is death.
Also, part of the lie was to cast doubt upon the character of God suggesting that He was jealously holding them back from their destiny (God is afraid that you may become his rival. They would become like God if they ate, and God new knew that, according to Satan. Satan held out to them the promise of divinity.
“God knows that the day you eat of if your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God” This is difficult to see in English but in Hebrew the prohibition is made in the singular, when Satan makes this statement he makes it in the plural so the “your” is not possessive it is also plural
They were supposed to get higher insight, higher wisdom, the power to perceive physically, mentally, spiritually.
With that, the devil’s work was done… he left them with their natural desires and physical appetites.

The Result

Genesis 3:6–7 (NASB95)
When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings.
So Eve decided that Satan was telling the truth and that they had misunderstood God. From Eve’s perspective it was not overt rebellion but seduction and deception to make her think she was doing the right thing.
1 Timothy 2:14 (NASB95)
And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.
Both of them were guilty of altering the careful order that God had placed: God, man, woman, animals. One theologian points out “the woman listens to the serpent, the man listens to the woman, and no one listens to God”.
For all the promise of some kind of mystical awakening, divine like powers, they were left with less than they had.
The Bible Knowledge Commentary (3:1–7)
The results, of course, were anticlimactic. The promise of divine enlightenment did not come about. They both ate and saw, but they were spoiled by so doing. They were ill at ease with one another (mistrust and alienation) and they were ill at ease with God (fearful and hiding from Him). Satan’s promises never come true. Wisdom is never attained by disobeying God’s Word. Instead the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Prov. 1:7).
The only new insight they had was the knowledge that they were naked and that nakedness is a reason for shame.
They were not allowed to eat from one tree, later one they get expelled from the garden and now they cannot eat from any of the trees.
All of their children (us) destined to live under the yolk of sin.
They start covering themselves with whatever leaves they can find.
Genesis 3:8–9 (NASB95)
They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. Then the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?”
God shows up like he had always shown up in some visible form perhaps the Shekinah glorious light but it was not frightening to his children its just dad.
I read somewhere Angelina Jolie as she played the part in the Disney movie Maleficent went through a slew of child actors that did splendidly during rehearsals until these poor children had to face the actress in her full costume (MALEFICENT PIC HERE)
She absolutely terrified every little girl who was suppose to play the part of young Aurora (sleeping beauty).
But then someone came up with the idea of using her own child to play the part (ANGELINA WITH DAUGHTER PIC HERE)
before the fall it was a delight for God’s children to be visited by their Father but shame, remorse, confusion, guilt, and fear all led to their current behavior, but where would they hide?
Genesis 3:10–13 (NASB95)
He said, “I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself.” And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” The man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me from the tree, and I ate.” Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” And the woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
They hear the Father moving around in the garden and respond in the language of fear, sorrow, confusion, but not confession nor repentance.
The reluctance of sinful people to admit wrongdoing is now cemented. We all suffer from this now. Those of us who admit when we have behaved badly do not do so without some level of internal struggle.
Adam blames the woman and ultimately God himself. In other words, I did not ask for her
The woman blames the serpent saying that it deceived her which was partially true, but just because the devil lied and did not deliver what he promised did not absolve her from disobeying God
Genesis 3:14–15 (NASB95)
The Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, Cursed are you more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you will go, And dust you will eat All the days of your life;
Here God begins to explain consequences. The serpent (the animal) is more cursed than the other animals. (All the animals are cursed). Rather than fly or walk or whatever you did before to move around, now you will slither on your belly. And the eating dust has to do with it being repugnant and detestable.
But then God begins to speak directly to the puppet master behind the puppet:
And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel.”
A perpetual struggle between Satan and his seed which are basically unbelievers. And the woman’s seed which is Christ and all of those who are in Him. Jesus himself defines this in John 8:44
This is what church fathers have called the protoevangelium. Satan’s will bruise his heel (cause Him to suffer). But He will crush his head.. (deliver a fatal blow). 1 john 3:8
