What do I believe God wants us to know? We can murder with our mouths and attitudes
Why? God wants to show us the power of words
What do I believe God wants us to do? Slow to speak, quick to listen, slow to become angry and forgive
Why? It leads to life not death
ME/WE
Today are going threw the 6th word of the 10 words.
It is a word that most of us will look at and say yep I have that one covered not done that nor thought about it, though in my anger I may said I might do this.
So we can move onto the next one…Finally a word that move past that doesn’t challenge me.
What is the 6th word?
Exodus 20:13 ESV
“You shall not murder.
Most of us in this room or online say I got one covered…Never done, never thought about it.
I do want to clarify one thing….It does say do not murder…it doesn’t say do not kill….and I am not saying we should kill don’t misunderstand me or the Bible
Why is important that there
Because there are some killings that are not murder
Someone killing someone unfortunately to save the life of someone….We have see police officers and service men and women that unfortunately put in a very difficult situation of needed to end some else
Moses killed an Egyptian who was beating, strickening an Egyptian….many scholars and theoglogians we can arleady see Mose’s early years Mose’s heart for injustice.
Murder is different. Murder is unjust killing
God says to us do not murder, do not commit any unjust killings
AGAIN WE SAY CHECK THE BOX
MOVE ONTO THE NEXT WORD
Though many of us have not committed and will never commit the LETTER of the LAW…all us at one point or another have broken the heart of the law.
Pastor Pete that is a bold statement!!!
How could you say that???
How have I broken the HEART of this law?? I get breaking from time to time the Sabbath, and honoring my parents, and keeping God #1 and having no idols!
This is what Jesus points out in his famous sermon, called the Sermon on the Mount that has like 37 points.
Jesus shows this group of people the heart of the word…I want you to that MURDER is not JUST the PHYSICAL ENDING OF LIFE…
JESUS IS GOING TO SHOW US THAT WE CAN MURDER WITH OUR
ATTITUDES
WORDS
Anyone in here ever been murdered by someones words???
Anyone ever murder anyone with your words???
Listen to what Jesus says in Matt 5:21
Matthew 5:21 ESV
“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’
You have heard these things, if you murder, you will be judge.
Everyone is shacking their heads
Then Jesus does what only Jesus can do and says
Matthew 5:22 ESV
But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.
Jesus says 3 things
Anyone who is ANGRY and this WORD for ANGRY is BOILING HOT and WRATHFUL.
The type of angry that you see in cartoons, donald duck, bugs bunny
The type of anger where you start saying, “When I talk to them.”
Oh course none of us have been this way, right??? None of us have boiling hot anger, right, pretend coversations, right?
Oh wait we have at times
JESUS SAYS THAT ANGER IS LIABLE TO JUDGEMENT JUST LIKE REAL MURDER
Why is so important? JESUS HAS ONE TRUE TREASURE ON THIS WORLD AND IT IS PEOPLE, IMAGE BEARERS AND GOD DOES NOT LIKE WHEN OTHER IMAGE BEARES ARE FUMMING ANGRY AT OTHERS
It is also good to remember that there are others words for anger, some are quick and have to do with injustice.
When Jesus
John 2:13–17 ESV
The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there. And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. And he told those who sold the pigeons, “Take these things away; do not make my Father’s house a house of trade.” His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.”
Or Jesus gets angry at the Pharisees because of their hard hearts.
Ephesians 4:26–27 ESV
Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil.
There good anger and bad anger
Matthew 5:22 ESV
But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.
2. Jesus says to whoever says RAKA, insulting words, says your dumb, you idiot, you are fat, you are ugly, (one I got a lot) you are short,
Cuts people down
Anyone who comes and insults there brother is liable to the council. Sanherian the highest all of the Jewish courts, sort of the super court.
Jesus says those who say insulting WORDS are being murdeous with them and need to go to the highest council….SUPREME COURT
Some of us think is this a big deal???
Many of the list of sins that we call bad sins are sins that we think are not so bad
Ephesians 5:3–4 ESV
But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.
Why is this such a big deal?
Jesus knows the power and damaging effect of words…WORDS CAN BE MURDEROUS…….
sticks and stones may break my bones words will never hurt me was written by the Devil.
Words have power
Proverbs 18:21 ESV
Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.
3. Who ever says FOOL (moron) will be liable to hell
Matthew 5:22 ESV
But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.
Jesus says anyone who calls the people who are created in the image of God MORON’s…what God has created
He’s a MORON
He’s an IDIOT
He’s A PIECE OF TRASH
Words we might say in traffic
These words are so murderous that they are liable to hell,
The word for hell is Gehenna, Gehenna represented a place of God’s wrath, punishment, hence the affiliation with fire.
Jesus is saying if call something I created a MORON, label it as something it is not, you are liable to the punishment of hell, the wrath of God.
This is convicting
ANYBODY IN THIS ROOM NOT BREAK EITHER OF THESE 3 COMMANDS???
Get super anger with someone, wrathful angry?
Insult someone
Called someone a moron?
This heavy stuff all of us have done this at one point or another. What do we do with this?
Before we go to the solution
I believe that we can do some preemtive stuff
Genesis 1:27 ESV
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
Romans 3:23 ESV
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
ONCE WE THINK WE ARE BETTER IT IS EASIER TO LOOK DOWN
2. Practice
James 1:19 ESV
Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger;
how many of us have gotten angry at somebody before they heard the whole story???
THIS IS THE PREEMPTIVE
3. RESOLUTION
Matthew 5:23–26 ESV
So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. Truly, I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny.
I know this hard at times…WE have to swallow our pride
Ephesians 4:32 ESV
Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.
Matthew 18:21–35 ESV
Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times. “Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. When he began to settle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.’ And out of pity for him, the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. But when that same servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii, and seizing him, he began to choke him, saying, ‘Pay what you owe.’ So his fellow servant fell down and pleaded with him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you.’ He refused and went and put him in prison until he should pay the debt. When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their master all that had taken place. Then his master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’ And in anger his master delivered him to the jailers, until he should pay all his debt. So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.”
Praise God that Jesus was murdered on the cross for our sins so that we can be forgiven.
He received the punishment we should have received.
