The Judgment of Sin

Natural Punishment

not an ultimate expression of the punishment of sin
Romans 1:18 NKJV
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,
from heaven against all ungodliness (disregard of reverential awe toward God) and unrighteousness of men (wickedness of men), who hold [SUPRESS, RESTRAIN, HINDER] the truth in unrighteousness;

GOD’S WRATH IS SHOWN IN DEATH

Proverbs 8:36 NKJV
36 But he who sins against me wrongs his own soul; All those who hate me love death.”
Ezekiel 18:4 NKJV
4 “Behold, all souls are Mine; The soul of the father As well as the soul of the son is Mine; The soul who sins shall die.
ILL: 1 Chronicles 10:13 So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the Lord, even against the word of the Lord, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to inquire of it;
EVIDENTLY SAUL DIDN’T HEED THE PROVERB THAT SAYS
Proverbs 11:19 As righteousness tendeth to life: So he that pursueth evil pursueth it to his own death.

GOD’S WRATH IS SHOWN IN DESERTION

Isaiah 59:2 NKJV
2 But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear.
ILL: Judges 16:20 And she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he wist not that the Lord was departed from him.
ILL: Joshua 7:11–12
Joshua 7:11–12 NKJV
11 Israel has sinned, and they have also transgressed My covenant which I commanded them. For they have even taken some of the accursed things, and have both stolen and deceived; and they have also put it among their own stuff. 12 Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they have become doomed to destruction. Neither will I be with you anymore, unless you destroy the accursed from among you.

GOD’S WRATH IS SHOWN IN DELUSIONS

2 Thessalonians 2:10–12 NKJV
10 and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, 12 that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
Proverbs 2:14 NKJV
14 Who rejoice in doing evil, And delight in the perversity of the wicked;
Who [INDIVIDUALS WHO LEAVE UPRIGHTNESS AND WALK IN WAYS OF DARKNESS] rejoice to do evil, And delight in the frowardness [PERVERSITY] of the wicked;

The Ultimate Punishment

Hell

Mark 9:43–48 NKJV
43 If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed, rather than having two hands, to go to hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched— 44 where ‘Their worm does not die And the fire is not quenched.’ 45 And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame, rather than having two feet, to be cast into hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched— 46 where ‘Their worm does not die And the fire is not quenched.’ 47 And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire— 48 where ‘Their worm does not die And the fire is not quenched.’

Lake of Fire

Re 20:11–15 NKJV
11 Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. 14 Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.

Views Concerning Hell

A. Literal view

torments of Hell are literal
Luke 16 – the man in Hell was actually experiencing the torments

B. Metaphorical view

the flames are metaphors for the actual wrath of God
 Fire of Hell = a metaphor for a type of punishment God has designed
 Tends to shield from the reality of the fire of hell

C. Purging view

Catholic
 The fire makes you better

D. Annihilationism

 The soul and everything else is completely destroyed

The Place of Punishment (Descriptions/Names)

Gehenna – a picture of the continuing fire and desecration; it was a reference to an actual place

A furnace of fire
The lake of fire
The abyss
Tartarus

The Elements of Hell

(What makes Hell what it is?)

Total absence of the favor of God.

2 Thessalonians 1:8–10 NKJV
8 in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, 10 when He comes, in that Day, to be glorified in His saints and to be admired among all those who believe, because our testimony among you was believed.

Utter Darkness

Matthew 22:13 NKJV
13 Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
God is light
No influence of the Holy Spirit on their lives
Given over to the complete reprobation of the flesh

Endless disturbance of life

Positive pains and sufferings

Matthew 8:12 NKJV
12 But the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
Luke 16:23–24 NKJV
23 And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24 “Then he cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.’

Subjective punishments

(seen in Luke 16)
 Conscience – he knew of his own brothers coming there
 Anguish, despair, weeping, gnashing of teeth
 The fire of hell will be like salt, preserving them

Degrees of Punishment

Those who sinned against the Light will actually receive more punishment

Duration – it lasts forever

Matthew 25:46 NKJV
46 And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
– it lasts as long as Heaven does
Mark 9:43 NKJV
43 If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed, rather than having two hands, to go to hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched—
– fire of hell is unquenchable
Luke 16:26 NKJV
26 And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.’
– there is a great gulf “fixed”
