Intro: A few years ago the youth group invented a game based on Samuel's early childhood. We would blind-fold one of the youth and give them a ball. That person would say "Samuel, Samuel" and the rest of the youth group would stand around in a circle and say, "Speak, for your servant hears." Then the person who had the ball would throw it at one of the others standing around. This game was based off of Samuel's call from God to minister for Him in 1 Samuel 3. In chapters 4-5 we got a chance to look at the beginning of Jesus's ministry. Now, it seems that the theme of the gospel is the call of the first few disciples of Jesus. We are going to be looking at today the specific calling, the answer to that call, and what answering that call looks like.

1. Luke 5:1-11

1. Subject: First Disciples are called

2. Objective: They couldn't even catch fish on their own. Jesus performed a miracle and allowed them to catch the fish as an example as to the ability He would give them to "catch men".

1. John 15:5 without Jesus we can do nothing for the Kingdom.

2. This is the same lake as the Sea of Galilee. Sometimes also known as "the lake".

3. After each days work the nets were taken care of. They would wash, mend and checked for the next days work.

4. Night time was the preferred time to fish. When finished they wouldn't just go home they would train the crew and go into the markets to try to sell their catch of the day.

5. Peter would have heard Jesus's teaching and reports about Him. At this point seeing the power of God in the current circumstance he recognized God's holiness and his sin shown bright in the light of the Messiah.

3. Application: Notice how Jesus did two things here.

1. He asked Peter to do something he had the ability to do but wasn't successful at for the night. Sometimes Jesus will ask us to do something we have the ability to do but we still need his help and power.

2. He then told Peter that he would be doing something that he didn't have the ability to do but Jesus would give him that ability.

2. Luke 5:12-15

1. Subject: The Leper Cleansed

2. Objective: Jesus not only could heal the leper but He wanted to in this situation. He followed through and instructed the leper to follow the law so the miracle could act as a testimony.

1. Question: What does implore mean? To Beg

2. Question: Why did he ask if Jesus was willing? In Jesus's day curing leprosy was impossible, so it would have been seen as the same as raising someone from the dead.

3. How was showing yourself to the priest a testimony as to what had happened and why did He still have to offer a sacrifice? According to Leviticus 14:2-10 a priest had to verify the cleansing. This was meant as a testimony to the verifying priest that the Messiah was among Israel.

1. Because of what was prescribed to do, the testimony would have gone from the priest and made it's way around to everyone who would have seen the specific activities of the person that God had worked the miracle.

3. Application: Is Jesus willing? Jesus is willing to heal and see people healed of deases, yet he still says no to healing sometimes. He has an eternal perspective and his goal is to be glorified so that people will come to him and receive eternal salvation.

3. Luke 5:16-26

1. Subject: The Paralytic Healed

2. Objective: There are two points here.

1. The faith of the friends of the paralytic man.

2. Jesus has the power to forgive sins and to heal physically.

1. Question: If you can pray anytime and anywhere, why did Jesus withdraw himself to go and pray? Instead of embracing fame, it seems that Luke focuses on a very important aspect of Jesus's ministry. 3 things.

1. Prayer

2. Reliance on the Father

3. Determination to do His will.

2. Question: Why were the teachers of the law present from the surrounding areas? Josephus indicates that there were over 6,000 Pharisees. They were known as the "separated one's" They would have been interested to see what was going on as many of them wanted to serve God well. Their emphasis however, seemed to be focused on outward acts and rituals. They typically opposed Jesus with a few exceptions. -The Reformation Study Bible

3. Question: What does it mean that there was power of the Lord that was present to heal them? This isn't suggesting that His power came and went, rather it was that Luke's focus was on the fact that Jesus relied on the power of the Holy Spirit.

4. Question? How did they get on the roof? Most houses had flat roofs and stairs on the outside.

5. Luke 5:20- Why did he say your sins are forgiven you when the man was brought for healing? Was his condition caused by a sin?

6. Which is easier to say? When Jesus forgives sin the reason this would have been considered blasphemy is that you can't forgive someone for sin that hasn't sinned against you. You don't have the authority to do that. When Jesus says that his sin is forgiven he is also saying that the man's sin, or all sin is against him which would make this a statement of diety.

1. Illustration: I can forgive you for stealing my car... because it was an offense towards me and because it is stealing it is also an offense towards God, but I can't forgive you for stealing your neighbor's car, it didn't involve me at all. I don't have the authority to do that... only if your act included me and in this case the only other person that could be included would have been God.

4. Luke 5:27-28

1. Subject: Matthew is Called

2. Objective: Matthew was a tax collector in the middle of his "sinful" workday. People would've despised him yet Jesus called him to follow. He responded in faith.

1. Question: What would the other disciples have thought or the others watching? Jews viewed Matthew as an addition to His disciples as scandalous. Tax collector's often got their job through bidding for it and then they would over-tax the people.

5. Luke 5:29-32

1. Subject: Jesus Eats with Sinners

2. Objective: Jesus didn't come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.

1. Question: Why did Matthew hold a great feast for him and why were there all of the other tax collectors? This would have been like an office going away party where Matthew wanted to invite a special guest for His friends. His new friend Jesus.- Word in Life Study Bible.

2. Question: Were the scribes and the Pharisees there eating with them? No, they would have been outside, because having table fellowship with sinners would have been defiling.

6. Luke 5:33-35

1. Subject: Jesus talks about Fasting

2. Objective: Jesus is the one to whom they were to fast and pray to. How can you communicate through fasting when you are with the one that you are fasting to?

1. It would be like using a cell phone to call the person sitting next to you to ask a question.

1. Question: When would the days come that the bridegroom would be taken away? When Jesus dies on the cross and ascends to heaven.

7. Luke 5:36-39

1. Subject: parable of the Wine skin

2. Objective: The old and the new can't be mixed together. When someone has tasted the old they think it is better.

1. Question:What is a wine skin? Leather pouches used for storing wine. -Faithlife Study Bible.

2. Wine skins stretch. The Old wine skin would have already stretched to full capacity because of the fermentation of the wine. New wine in Old wine skins would need to ferment and break the old.

3. This parable is about mixing the Old ways of thinking and doing things with a new way that is coming. i.e. Judaism vs. Christianity. Law verses Grace. We have a tendency as people to be used to the ways we've always done it and not be open to the new work.

4. This was a faulty attitude. This was placed in here to show that there was contentment with Judaism's old ways of doing things. This prevented them from being open-minded about the way God was actually acting in fulfilling acts of salvation.

Conclusion: Being called as a disciple of Jesus in this chapter was about more than saying, "Yes, I believe." It was about believing and following. Likewise, in our lives being a witness of Jesus and having a living faith is more than saying we believe, it is about believing and obedience to Jesus. Jesus says that if you love me obey my commands. James says that without works our faith is dead. John said that He (Jesus) shall increase and that I shall decrease. We need to have this same attitude in us and that is how we will become more effective disciple of Jesus. It is not what people think about us that is important but what they think about Jesus as we let him live our lives through us. That is what our new life is about.
