Good morning. Good to see everybody. Hey, if you have your bibles if you'd open up to Genesis chapter 11.

Genesis chapter 11 and we're going to read versus 129. Genesis 11 starting in verse 1

It says the whole earth had the same language and vocabulary is people migrated from the East they found a valley in the land of shinar and settled there and they said to each other come. Let's make oven fired bricks. They use brick for stone and asphalt for Mortar and they said come let's build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the sky. Let's make a name for ourselves. Otherwise, we will be scattered throughout the Earth. Then the Lord came down to look over the city in the tower that the humans were building. The Lord said if they have begun to do this as one people all having the same language than nothing. They plan to do will be impossible for them. Come let's go down there and confuse their language so that they will not understand one another speech. So from their the Lord scattered them throughout the Earth and they stopped building the city. Therefore is called Babylon for their the Lord confuse the language of the whole earth and from there the Lord scattered them throughout the year. As we get started, I will just pray one more time Lord. We thank you for the morning that you've given us and we thank you for your word in our language. We thank you that you are a good God. And we've come here this morning to worship you we pray that you would teach us by Your Word by your spirit and reveal to us your son. All our hope is pinned on Jesus Lord. And it's in his name. We pray. Amen. Recently so four for three weeks actually James James spoke to us about rest. Remember that week before week before last. He took us through Psalm 46:10 be still and know that I am God. I see striving and know that I am God is what it says in the first thing he pointed out was the perhaps the central issue the primary reason why we we don't rest is because we're trying to replace God we tried trying to be God, which is exhausting. Right? We don't have we don't have the wisdom. We don't have the power. We don't have the patience or the grace to fill that position. Of course course this exhausting to try to be gone in our own lives. Without the one who made us. We we wander without him we are lost is just like we say we need him every day every hour. We need him. He's the one who gives us purpose. He's the one who gives the significance and importance. He's the only one Who who can tell you your life counts you've lived? Well, you're the kind of person a human is meant to be easier to use than the one we depend on for provision and protection every breath every heartbeat. It comes from in this life. and for everything that comes after You need a week. We can some that all up and say we were made we were made to trust God and and praise God he's trustworthy what the scriptures teach us in as we've been going to the series on the beginnings with teachers that the Bible teaches us that way back in the beginning Humanity turned away from humanity rebelled and we've been trying collectively and individually ever since trying to replace God which means again all the things God does for us we end up looking for another God to do.

There's a word that describes what it means to put our hope and something else other than our creator that the term for a religion or Devotion to anything other than the true God that's paganism if you grew up and going to church you probably heard that term if you didn't it maybe sounds kind of old-fashioned maybe kind of offensive even but it's important has an important meeting paganism at least the way the Bible defines it is the worship. Worship of anything or anyone other than the one true God. The worship of anything or anyone other than the one true God In this passage. We just read and what we're going to study this morning. This is about when paganism became the world religion. And up until today, even though the original City and and power it at Babel or Babylon exact same word in Hebrew, by the way, even though that place is more or less dust in the desert the mindset the attitude. The religion of Babylon is still thriving in the world today. That's what we're looking at this morning. And God offers us here a picture that teaches about the roots of paganism the problem of paganism and God's answer to it. The roots of paganism the problem of paganism and God's answer to it three things in it. That's what we're going to look at 2 to begin the roots of paganism. The first thing we need to see in the taxes that the whole world got involved in this right verse 1 says the whole earth had the same language in vocabulary is people migrated from the East they found a valley in the land of shinar and settled there and we have a quick nap after the flood the family of Noah moved Eastward and comes to an area. We now called Mesopotamia. Literally. It's the the the land between the rivers. Okay, and it's this broad plain that sits between the Tigris and Euphrates. I don't know if he can kind of see it as a pink part on the map there.

And the people settled there in Genesis 10, which is where we were last week. We read about a man named Rebel Nimrod and according to Genesis 10. He found a city called Babylon now again in in the Hebrew Bible Babel and Babylon. Okay, exactly. Same word. There's no difference same place. Everyone started out there the whole world at that time, which means which means we all have roots in this right. If this passage is describing paganism. We all all of us have Pagan Roots. Did you know that Even Abraham write the father of Faith right we're God is going to kick off where the story's going to go next week with we in Genesis 12 his routes. We're in paganism. Joshua chapter 24 the Lord the god of Israel says long ago your ancestors including Tara the father of father of Abraham live beyond the Euphrates river and worship other gods.

Will learn will learn next week that the area of the world where this takes place. What we're reading about today is a very same place God called Abraham out of the tendency towards worshiping things other than the one true. God is universal why the first of the Ten Commandments Is you shall have no other gods before me? Number one and that's what every human being tends to do automatically is put other gods before him. There's a book. I actually read it a couple times now. It's a good read a book by a guy named David's all it's called seculosity K secular religion religiosity and those together seculosity is basically this that contrary to the evidence from church attendance polls. We Americans are just as religious as we've ever been. Human nature fundamentally seeks a source of Hope purpose and most of all as he calls it enough. This even is Big. Our religion is seemingly begun to fade other contenders have stepped in to meet our need for small our religion or what we rely on not just for meeting or hope but enough notice there are all sorts of ways. That's a weak human being seek to replace God to justify ourselves to build toward heaven to make a name for ourselves to set her on purpose to assure ourselves that we are enough. In and of ourselves, but in the end it's never enough. Those things we try to use to take his place can't bear the weight of your life. Let alone the world. And so knowing this knowing that this is the tendency of mankind and we have Pagan Roots dear. I hope we can set up this morning and listen to what the Lord has to stay here because this isn't just about those people back then. This is a story God gives the teachers today. This isn't just their problem. This is our problem. And that's what we're going to see next the problem of paganism the problem of paganism first three. They said to each other come let's make oven fired bricks brick for stone and asphalt for Mortar and they said come let's build ourselves a city a tower with its top in the sky. Let's make a name for ourselves. Otherwise, we will be scattered throughout the earth. Now you might be thinking might be asking at this point Jared. Will you talking about people trying to replace God worshipping other gods? Where is that in this text? And where does it say that and also how is what the people did hear a problem right there? They're unified in that a good thing. It's not a good thing if this is paganism, how is this a problem? Okay, you were introduced to three aims of this unified humanity and let's look at each of these these things a little bit more closely and ask why building a city in an hour.

Making a name for a cell doing all that in an effort to avoid being scattered. Why is this so dangerous to humanity? Why does God treat this like a problem to be solved? We'll look at that first the city and the tower it's helpful to know that the towers are building is probably something the Israelites would have known something about we don't know much about it today. It's something they would have known something about some of them would have likely seen this sort of tower at one point. It's very likely this Tower is what we would call a ziggurat and we have a schedule. It's already up there. We have a sketch of of one. This is an actual sketch of the oven a ziggurat than a than an archaeologist made looking at some ruins near in present-day you rock. This was it was excavated in the 1920s by a guy named Willie who said that the remains of the ziggurat consists of a three-layered solid mass of mud brick faced with burnt Rick's set in bitumen, which is fancy name for asphalt or tar same thing. Now is ziggurat is a religious building with stairs leading up to a platform where there was a shrine or an altar in the Old Testament. You'll have to read about how the Israelites or or told to tear down the high places. And these are the places where shrines and old Idols were set up on the tops of hills and mountains here on the plains of shinar. There are no Hills. There are no natural mountains. There are no high places. So they build one they build an artificial mountain with their own hands. They build a monument that gives them access to the Gods. In fact, you're weird. We're going to learn here. But the true meaning of Babylon its confusion. What did the Babylonians you know what they thought it meant gate of the Gods?

The stairway Between Heaven and Earth. That's what they thought the city in the Tower of Babylon was the gateway to the Gods. Where we find these towers the ziggurats. There are entire Temple complex is entire cities with the temple in the center, right? So this Tower and this city, it's not just buildings from what we know in history and what we learn about the Babylonians and scripture these these things are not just architecture. This is religion. This is religious in nature and it was not built to honor the god of the Bible, right? Who is it really built to honor one of the names of of the many gods the Babylonians have but here they're actually a little bit more honest about it. They're doing all these things to make a name for themselves. That's the second thing they say let us make a name ourselves up until this point. Everyone is given a name. This is the first place we find people seeking to make a name for themselves in a name isn't just something to be called. Its notoriety its Fame its honor. There's Glory seeking here. And lastly they say why they're going to do all these things. It's as they say otherwise, we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth. Now got sad and in Genesis 1 and Genesis 9 his right his Blessing that he gave to humanity in his purpose for the human race is it that we will cover the all the Earth spread over the whole land. These people have decided that is the last thing they want. Completely opposed to the purposes of God. Okay, if actively saying we will we will set our own course. We will Blaze our own trail. We will Define our own future we decide not God. Interesting to that that little note about they use brick for stone and tar for Mortar. It's almost as though you know what he did that flood thing back there right? We'll be ready next time. We got a waterproof Tower to run to I never mind his promise to never flood the Earth again will set our own force will save ourselves. This is a self salvation project. And woven into all these statements. I don't know. Maybe you picked up on this woman into all these statements. There's one more clue as to why the people's attitude attitude here is so dangerous is two words. Let us 3 * let us come. Let us make bricks. Let us build a tower in a city. Let us make a name for ourselves who talks like that. Who's the only other person does Farm talks like that. God does God does in the very beginning right Creator. The king of King is the one true God of the beginning Genesis 1:26. Then God said let us make man in our image according to our likeness these people sound like they're trying to play God. He says let us do that. Okay, we can do that too. Well, then let us do this.

Trying to replace God Babel Babylon is built around the worship of someone other than the one true God in fact is completely opposed to him. This is paganism. Worship of anything or anyone other than the one true God building their own way to heaven true religion one brick at a time one ritual at a time trying to make their own way back to Eden making their own name trying to satisfy human Pride looking for justification approval-seeking Glory all with the goal of setting their own purpose and Destiny nevermind, but the Creator God had in mind. What do you call the student? We will be masters of our own fate. It's okay. Okay, I can see that I guess I could see the paganism there. How is this a problem David Foster Wallace fairly well-known writer and thinker not a theologian. Not a pastor. I don't think he ever claimed even be a follower of Jesus. But he had lived long enough and thought about it and he could see the problem here. Let me paraphrase something. This is something he said. He said this actually the University graduation and it and this speech is actually become pretty pretty famous. Listen to what he says here. He says in the day-to-day trenches of adult life. There is actually no such thing as atheism. There is no such thing as not worshipping. Everybody worships. The only choice we get is what to worship and an outstanding reason for choosing God for example to worship. Is that pretty much anything else you worship will eat you alive.

If you worship money and things if they are where you tap real meaning in life, then you will never have enough never feel you have enough. Worship your own body and beauty and sexual Allure and you will always feel ugly and when time and age start showing you will die a million deaths before they finally plants you. Worship power you will feel weak and Afraid and you will need ever more power over others to keep the fear at Bay worship your intellect being seen as smart. You will end up feeling stupid abroad always on the verge of being found out and so on. You hear what he said? He understood the human heart. Well enough to know this is the natural bent of every person we all Worship in at the same time. He could see the effect of setting your help on something of this world little G God's and especially yourself and he goes on and he says this this is the default religion of the world. He's that I'm reading what he said again. The Insidious thing about these forms of worship is that they are unconscious and the world will not discourage you from operating like this because the world of men and money and power hums along quite nicely on the fuel of fear and contempt and frustration and craving and the worship of self. Our own present culture is harness these forces in ways that have yielded extraordinary wealth and comfort and personal freedom. The freedom to be Lords of our own tiny skull sized kingdoms alone at the center of all creation.

Agonism is a problem. And like we said earlier the whole world was here. We all have roots in this this isn't just their problem way back then. This exist today and you don't even have to be a theologian to recognize how destructive this is. We don't use brick and tar but we too can try to build towers to Heaven try to make a name for ourselves live as though we're like God setting our own purpose and Destiny you can try to do it with your career your parenting with technology with food with with politics and romance Romance. I don't own any of those things can functionally become a little our religion that we look to like a tower to Heaven paganism is a problem because like

like we've seen none of those things can deliver. Listen. If God is your creator. If God is your creator, he knows what you need better than you do. He is the only one who has the right to tell you how to live.

If God made all this God made all this. Down to down to the laws that govern the Motions of of atoms. And planets if he can offer everything from that break the simple beauty of a flower.

To the to the blanket of stars and galaxies up in the sky. You can see his wisdom. You can see his power.

But even more than that in Jesus Christ God come in the flesh. You can see his care for you.

To give anyone else or anything else his place in your life. Of course, it will eat you alive. Of course, it can't handle it. There's no substitute for him and God cares too much to stand back and allow the world. To be consumed by itself right to allow the world to eat itself alive like this. I'm going to talk about that now for just a moment. If you're a Believer, you're a Believer. You're a follower of Christ. It can be tempting to say yes. Yes. Yes. That is the way the world out. There is look at all look that they looked all those things. I'm just looking to God. Can we think about this together for just a moment? If you walk with Christ for very long, you know those Pagan Roots Die Hard. And there are always things that can creep back in one of the things that the early Christians Paul Paul talks about this in his letters. One of the things the early Christian struggled with was that even after they had come to faith in Christ. The old ways is the old temples that they used to worship at the old things. They used to trust them. They were tempted to go back to them. It's not impossible that are old Pagan Roots can show up again. So so before we move on with we might ask how would we know right? How would we recognize that old Babylonian paganism if it was in her life or something? You do historians tell us that the only that only the priests had access to the top of the ziggurat.

So, you know, I mean Powers not only give people a sense of reaching up to God they become excellent places to look down on other people from

when when that Pharisee prayed you remember this or Jesus talk about the Pharisee that was praying Lord. I Thank you that I'm not like other men. Honestly, that sounds like the sort of thing a person who is standing on top of a tower Pride would say right Tower built on his own efforts and write prayers and good works and all of that one of the ways that you can recognize you can see if your old roots your old Bagan roots of showing up. It says take note of how you view other people when you get around people who haven't achieved as much as you have do you look down on them?

You have to ask yourself. If you do what am I standing on that allows me to look down on other people. Anytime you find yourself looking down on someone else ask yourself that question. What am I standing on right now?

Spiritually speaking. It's a power of some kind.

And if you're proud, it's probably because it's something you you feel like you felt. What is it? What is it that you're standing on that gives you this vantage point?

To criticize other people boil boy. Does that suck me between the eyes sometimes right? And I think Jared your Pagan roots are showing it then. When it comes to making a name for ourselves, you know our reputation in the community men women everybody. Nobody likes to be snubbed right? Nobody likes to be so everybody wants to be taken. Seriously. Did the Young don't want to be looked down on the old ghosts were older don't want to be treated as a relevant. We all want to be seen as strong and capable. What do you do when people don't treat you like that? Right? When your name doesn't Garner the kind of respect you would like does it hurt of course always? But the way you know, you're gone under threat your Tower is under attack. The way, you know, you've been trusting in the name you've made for yourself is that it sets you on a Warpath anger rate. They disrespect me. I'll snub them they they think they've got a tall tower, right and then we start to justify ourselves by pointing to all the things. We really stand on. I got 20 years more experience than her right. I've seen way more than he has look at my portfolio. Look at the business. I built I've got a real education. I study. I pray look at my kids. Look at my marriage me. I'm I look at what I've done. It's not brick-and-mortar. It's not a physical Empire, but it has the same roots.

What do you reach for when your name is under threat, is it what you have built? Is it the name you've made for yourself? See? That's the thing the first place we run to under threat are our Towers. We seek justification and refuge in what and who we worship.

Did you hear that we seek justification and refuge and what and who we worship?

Where do you go when you're in the front?

to your God

Another thing you can do is ask yourself. What lengths do I go to to avoid? The purposes? God has placed on my life has he called you to something? He told the human race spread out and they were afraid of that happening more than anything else. It's ironic because the command to spread out was actually part of the blessing God gave and yet they're afraid of it. So they built the city and at our work and they dug in. I forgot call was actually good thing, but they didn't want it when you look at your life and you find yourself in a place where you realize, you know, I'm running from God's purposes in my life. You're Pagan roots are showing And the things you seek refuge in in order to avoid him functionally. That's what you put your hope in.

Please don't hear me saying hey y'all need to do this. Right? I'm feeling a little awkward standing up here on this platform.

We all have Pickin roots and it is a problem. Not just for them. Those people over there all people got stuck in this and just to see how sticky of an issue. This is looking for 6 just Levin 6 the Lord said if they have begun to do this as one people all having the same language than nothing. They plan to do will be impossible for them. Now. This isn't about how impressed God is with what the people are doing right people can do anything. Look at that. This is a statement of Horror. B b b the think the way things are there is nothing than what he saying. There is nothing to prevent them. From taking this as far as I can go. This is a disaster. Okay, the human race is in a car and the car is headed off a cliff and there's no guard rails and there's no seatbelts and there's no airbags. There's nothing. The human race is driving itself into an abyss and there's no one else to stop them. No one down there. Once this gets going no one down there is going to be able to keep them from just dragging every future generation into the Hopeless darkness of the worship of false gods the worship of self. Things that will not only disappoint but will eat them alive.

That's who got steps into stop them not as punishment but its protection right? We can't and won't act to save ourselves. And so praise God he gets involved. Amen. Praise the Lord. He does not leave us to ourselves and that brings us to our last Point got the answer to Pegasus on paganism who's gone solution to our bent towards the worship of anything other than him everything other than him our Collective drives for trying to replace him. This is this answer. It's simply this the Lord came down.

The Lord came down he comes down to us. How good is that?

And because God comes down here, we see our need and because God comes down here. We see a preview of his grace. Because he comes down here. We we see our need what do you mean by that? But back up the first five just real quick. Does 11-5 is in the Lord came down to look over the city in the tower that the humans were building the Lord came down to see the city and the tower question. Why does God needs to come down to look at the city in the tower? He's omnipresent. He's everywhere. He's omniscient. He knows everything why come down to see the city in the tower. It would appear God is making a point, right? The people are saying we're building a tower to the heavens, right? We're Knocking on Heaven's Door, baby. Look at what we're doing.

And it's like God says or does tongue in cheek?

where but I heard there was a project going on.

I can't see it from here. I'm going to know you just stay there. I'll come down to you. right The point is of god up come down to see your Tower to the heavens your Towers too short.

They're so stinky. I never see those things on the internet different pictures where it be like what I think I did what I think I do. And what I really do, you know what I think I look like and what I really look like what we think we do looks kind of like this like we're storming the Gates of Heaven and we're not going to we're going to have access to Paradise again. And then there's what we what we actually do. This is an actual photo of that cigarette in her that was excavated. You know, how tall is actually is who knows what the we have the Redwoods Hotel down downtown right six stories tallest building in all of Grants Pass power to the heavens. They're about the same.

Every time you drive by to get the the wrestler Hotel, you can tell yourself that. Art hours too short

perspective Humanity we and we have an over-inflated view of her accomplishments. Listen. The god of the Bible is the creator. He's our maker and when you see what he has done for us right now, even after we rebelled you remain fit faithful that even while we treated him like an enemy Christ died for us he gave everything for us if that's who he is. Of course. Our towers are too short. Of course, you're not going to attain to that.

listen, if we could make ourselves good enough could achieve something worthy of all the honor and Glory of all creation for all eternity if we could do that build that be that We'd be God. But let's be real art H is way too short. We do not measure up your much later. After this time battle on was rebuilt Nebuchadnezzar. The second made Babylon. Not only a great City again. There are records that say he finished at our there was called a Yankee you can look it up but in scripture we read about that one night when drunk on Pride of the king of Babylon Nebuchadnezzar went insane. I think he thought he was something he was looking at all that he had built all the glory of the empire. And God comes to having says you're done.

You're going to eat crass. You can eat grass like a cow going to wander around the fields out of your right mind and it happens. You can read about it and Daniel 4. until finally the king admits God is gone and I'm not the only sane way to live conscious God and I am not I cannot possibly build something with my life that would attain to him. He has to come down to me.

We need God to come down and show us our powers are too short as a kind of thing. God can do is bring us back to our senses and show us he's got we aren't and then it completely changes the way we relate to him and completely changes the way we relate to others. Are we talked a bit before about how our Pagan Roots can lead us to look down on other people, you know if you're a believer in Christ if you're trusting in Jesus. We're the last people who should be looking down on anyone else. There's a saying the ground is level at the foot of the cross.

One of the ways you can know you've met the real Jesus's that suddenly all those things you might have looked at in the past is something that made you important right gave you a name. Put you above in a different class suddenly those things mean nothing.

And people you may have had nothing to do with in the past people who are too old or Too Young or or too rich or too poor over-educated or under educated or whatever the things we have a tendency to think put up closer to God and farther from the little people down there around us. Suddenly all those things be nothing all talked about when that hit him flipping three Philippians 3 says this he says if anyone else thinks he has grounds for confidence in the flash. I have more right I've got I've got a taller Tower than anybody around.

Circumcised The Eighth Day of the nation of Israel of The Tribe of Benjamin a Hebrew born of Hebrews regarding the law a Pharisee regarding Zeal persecuting the church regarding the righteousness that is in the law blameless. But everything that was getting to me I have considered to be a lost because of Christ and more than that. I also consider everything to be a loss and view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord everything he would have thought would have made him closer to God all the things he could do is Heritage his religious fervor worthless. It wasn't a tower to Heaven. It was a pit. Before we close out, you know, maybe you're here this morning. You're feeling you're probably feeling maybe beaten down this week and how you're feeling pretty low. You know, I Was preparing for this week if I had my choice about what passage would be looking at it wouldn't be this one. If you been here. The reason is there's been a lot of tragedy in our church family lately and in terms of tone. I don't know. I just didn't see it just didn't seem to fit. a bride gets a cure for sure, but honestly that isn't that isn't what I wanted to preach about right now, but what I wanted to talk about

Can I say this though? And please hear me if you're in pain if you're in crisis, you need to hear this.

You need to hear this today because you probably know better than anyone else right now that you need the one true God you need your creator got all the other things we can put our hope in for provision or protection is sensitive enough Miss and purpose they will fail you. And and we despair in tragedy when God is not God in our lives paganism leads to hopelessness.

We had a crisis in life and it becomes painfully obvious. Whatever we might have put our hope in goes out the window and we can see more clearly than ever before the towers. We build are too short. And so we purchase our faces and we said God. You have to come down and meet me here. I got nothing. I will never be able to reach up to you. If you're in a crisis. You don't need a little G God. You need the Big G. God your Creator God.

And he comes down. He comes down and it gets involved was finish it out Genesis 1179. This is, let's go down there and confuse their language so that they will not understand one another speech. So from their the Lord scattered them throughout the Earth and they stopped building the city. Therefore it is called Babylon for their the Lord Lord confuse the language of the whole earth and from there the Lord scattered them throughout the Earth. Got to come down scatters the people from their confused the languages. God comes down heads off the disaster. That would come if the people were left alone to their self salvation project their paganism, but the last thing and we'll close with this God coming down here points forward to the time when God came down again. And showed us what he had built. The tower he had built to heaven. Later on in Genesis the same book in Genesis. We read about Jacob. And Jacob had a dream one night and in that dream he saw stairway. A Stairway where its foundations were on the earth be. We're on the ground. But it truly did reach up to heaven all the way. And the Lord spoke to Jacob and said I'm going to bless you and your children are going to spread out over all the Earth right north south east west they're going to go everywhere and the whole earth will be blessed through you and then he woke up.

There was a way okay. I stay away reaching up to heaven. He saw it. There's a tower to heaven where it is what it is how to find it done. No nothing. Jacob wasn't told he just saw it. That's all and the stairway never shows up again.

until Jesus comes until God comes down in the flash as a man and you read in the Gospel of John one of the first things you just revealed to his disciples about himself is this it's in John 1151. He tells them they're going to see amazing things. And then he says that she says you will see Heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the son of man on him on Jesus. Jesus is the stairway. He is the ladder. He is the tower to Heaven. If you will not made with human hands. Jesus didn't didn't just come here to point us to the way to God. He is God come down and he is the way

the life you live the death. You died. He did it for you yourself salvation project was never going to work so he came down. And when Jesus came down, he made himself low lower than anybody ever been he made himself a servant and because he did that he was given what the name of every name?

You don't have to make a name for yourself. If you're in Christ, his name is the only one that ever matters his reputation is what your known by now. And then after Jesus ascended to heaven on the day of Pentecost what God did hear about all this reversed in Christ the confusion that came about because of human Pride from Hagen ISM in Christ at Pentecost coverversi, right?
