Ford says they have created a car that reads speed limit signs and slows down by itself. The company says the newest edition of its S-Max car has a technology that scans traffic signs and adjusts the throttle to help keep drivers with legal speed limits and avoid fines. The new system, called the intelligent speed limiter will be available on the company’s cars worldwide. The system does not apply the brakes when it senses a lower speed limit but controls engine torque by electronically adjusting the amount of fuel delivered. Ford says drivers can temporarily override the system by pressing firmly on the accelerator. Most observers believe the S-max system is another step toward creating a driverless car.--Jim L. Wilson and Jim Sandell
