Dedicated faith

Mary whom was healed of seven demons (Lk 8:2
Luke 8:2 NASB95
2 and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and sicknesses: Mary who was called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out,
Mary who was at the cross (Mt27:56
Matthew 27:56 NASB95
56 Among them was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
It is this Mary whom the Lord first appears to in our passage tonight (Jn20:11-18)

Here is the passage

John 20:11–12 NASB95
11 But Mary was standing outside the tomb weeping; and so, as she wept, she stooped and looked into the tomb; 12 and she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been lying.
John 20:13–14 NASB95
13 And they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.” 14 When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus.
John 20:15–16 NASB95
15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing Him to be the gardener, she said to Him, “Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to Him in Hebrew, “Rabboni!” (which means, Teacher).
John 20:17–18 NASB95
17 Jesus said to her, “Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I ascend to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God.’ ” 18 Mary Magdalene came, announcing to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord,” and that He had said these things to her.
What do you see, notice in this passage?
What does Mary do, and see (vv.11-12)?
Mary is weeping and while weeping stoops and looks in.
She sees two angels
She sees where the body of Jesus had been laying
Mary has belief, faith in what when you look at (vv.13-14)?
That Jesus had been taken away and laid somewhere else.
Not seeing that it is Jesus, Mary has faith, a conclusion (v.15), what is it? Then what happens (v.16)?
The man, she believed to be the gardener had carried Him away
The man speaks one word, and everything changed “Mary.”
Mary uses one word in response to knowing it is Jesus, what is the word (v.16)?
Rabboni (which means teacher).
Jesus gives instructions to Mary (vv.17-18), what are the instructions?
Stop clinging to Me
Go to My brethren
Say to them (tell them)

What Mary sees

She set up:
Devoted Mary, grief stricken came to the garden to care for the body (Jn20:1)
I love a verse that Courson correlated to this early morning trip to the show her love, devotion to the Lord.
Proverbs 8:17 NASB95
17 “I love those who love me; And those who diligently seek me will find me.
Mary out of love came to care for the Messiah.
Mary went to the disciples out of love, devotion to tell them Jesus was gone (Jn20:2)
Mary out of love stays at the empty tomb after the apostles left (Jn20:10)
John 20:11–13 NASB95
11 But Mary was standing outside the tomb weeping; and so, as she wept, she stooped and looked into the tomb; 12 and she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been lying. 13 And they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.”
Peter and John had examined the evidence and then left. John’s conclusion brought belief (Jn20:8) -not on the screen
John 20:8 NASB95
8 So the other disciple who had first come to the tomb then also entered, and he saw and believed.
Now it was Mary’s time to examine the evidence.
In her grief, in her weeping (loud lamenting, cries as would be characteristic of Jews (i.e. Jn11:31, 33)).
Mary did not have the belief, the confidence that John did (Jn20:8), she still believed the Lord was dead
Mary did not notice the burial wrappings that Peter and John did, but sees two angels one at the head, one at the foot. Could this be a picture of the cherubim over the mercy seat on the ark of the covenant (Exo25:17-19)
Exodus 25:17–19 NASB95
17 “You shall make a mercy seat of pure gold, two and a half cubits long and one and a half cubits wide. 18 “You shall make two cherubim of gold, make them of hammered work at the two ends of the mercy seat. 19 “Make one cherub at one end and one cherub at the other end; you shall make the cherubim of one piece with the mercy seat at its two ends.
Courson: “It is as though God is saying, ‘There is a new mercy seat! My Son has paid the price for sin, and the way is open into the presence of God!”
Even speaking to the angels, Mary had one belief, the Lord’s body was gone, and she did not know where it was. She came out of love, out of devotion to care for the body.

A turn that changes things

John 20:14–16 NKJV
14 Now when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” She, supposing Him to be the gardener, said to Him, “Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to Him, “Rabboni!” (which is to say, Teacher).
Seems Mary is turning circles now (v.14) she turns; (v.16) she turns again.
Mary on the first turn did not recognize Jesus by sight
Mary on the second term recognized the her shepherds voice.
Why did Mary turn the first time? Did she hear something? Did the angels see around her and see the Lord? We do not know, but we know she did not recognize Him. Did He conceal Himself like he would do on the road to Emmaus (Lk24:13-32), we do not know.
Alford: “Mary certainly knew who Jesus was, yet she did not expect Him to be there, and was wholly preoccupied with other thoughts.”
Jesus asks the same question, why do you weep. Faith should have told her that He had risen, fulfilling scripture. There should be joy.
Jesus adds also, whom are you seeking. Those who seek the Lord will find the Lord, and she is about to.
Jesus does not play games with people, Jesus is not trying to trick Mary, but to help Mary go from concealed faith to revealed faith, from forgetfulness of the promises to embracing the fulfilled promise.
Mary’s concern, focus, is still the same, she wants to know about the body so she can take Him away.
There was no thought about how would she take Him away, how would she carry the load. One commentator Clarke said:
“How true is the proverb, love feels no load! Jesus was in the prime of His life when he was crucified, and had a hundred pounds weight of spices added to his body; and yet Mary thinks nothing less than carrying Him away with her, if she can but find where he is laid!”
A word changes everything, to Mary it was the sound of her name. That changed everything from weeping to seeing her Shepherd, her Rabboni!
Spurgeon: “Never was a one-word utterance more charged with emotion that this, Jesus can preach a perfect sermon in one word.”
Rabboni (teacher) is actually one of three words, the first is Rab, the lowest form of the word, then Rabbi, followed by the highest Rabboni in it is this she addressed Him.

Mary, I have a job for you.

John 20:17–18 NKJV
17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.’ ” 18 Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that He had spoken these things to her.
Mary cleaved to Jesus, she found not the body, but the resurrected Lord and did not want to loose Him.
Why did Jesus tell her not to cling to Him?
Is it that she will see him again and it was not time to cleave, but to leave with a message?
Was it because he had not fully atoned for sin by ascending to heaven, the blood had not been applied?
That one is a huge speculation in the fact Jesus last words were “it is finished,” the atonement was done.
The ascension would be the ascension that was still 40-days away when He returned to the Father and sent the Comforter as promised just 10-days after that.
Mary loved, Mary cared, Mary cleaved, and Mary was obedient and she went to take care of the task, the job given.
According to Mk16:9-11, Mary was not believed
Mark 16:9–11 NASB95
9 Now after He had risen early on the first day of the week, He first appeared to Mary Magdalene, from whom He had cast out seven demons. 10 She went and reported to those who had been with Him, while they were mourning and weeping. 11 When they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they refused to believe it.
Mary had been weeping, lamenting and met the risen Savior, now the disciples will meet Him shortly, after their time of mourning and weeping.
Mary, a woman, one who would not be recognized for any testimony was the first one Jesus revealed Himself too. Woman had always been, are important to Him.
This also, according to Guzik:
“This (revealed Christ to Mary) also argues for the historic truth of this account. If someone fabricated this story, they would not make the first witnesses to the resurrection women, who were commonly (if unfairly) regarded as unreliable witnesses.”
Mary had an encounter with the Lord, was given instructions and obeyed them, may we be people who do the same today too.
