Point number 4 of the Church’s creed says:

4. We believe that as Christians, we are called to be disciples of Jesus Christ.

Last week, there was a set of verses to start the study of what it is to be a disciples of Jesus Christ.
*Discipleship assumes the person is saved and born again
John 8:31-38; Matthew 28:16-20; Matthew 16:24-25
What was the general theme of the passages? A focus on and obedience to Christ not self
Passages for study:
Mark 1:16-20 especially verse 17
Especially here in verse 17 we see what it is to be a disciple of Jesus though Jesus never uses the word disciple here.
There are three parts to what it is to be a disciple of Jesus.
3 Parts of discipleship in Mark 1:17
Part 1- Follow Me
Possible passages to look at as group
John 14:6; Hebrews 12:1-5; Luke 14:25-35; Hebrews 10:26-27
John 14:6 “6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
Hebrews 12:1–5 “1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted. 4 In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. 5 And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons? “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him.”
Luke 14:25–35 “25 Now great crowds accompanied him, and he turned and said to them, 26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. 27 Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. 28 For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? 29 Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, 30 saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ 31 Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? 32 And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace. 33 So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be …”
Hebrews 10:26–27 “26 For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries.”
Part 2- I [Jesus] will make you become; Sanctification
Passages for group study
Philippians 1:5-6; 2:12-13; John 15:1-5; Galatians 5:22-23
Philippians 1:5–6 “5 because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. 6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.”
Philippians 2:12–13 “12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.”
John 15:1–5 “1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”
Galatians 5:22–23 “22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”
What is our responsibility in the sanctification process?
What is God’s responsibility in the sanctification process?
Part 3- Become fishers of men; Partnership in God’s plan of Salvation
Passages for Study:
Colossians 3:22-23; Ephesians 2:10; 1 Peter 3:15; 1 Corinthians 2:1-5; Romans 10:14-15
As Disciples of Jesus we must be following Him through the study of His word, He will be at work through the Holy Spirit to sanctify us and calling us to partner with Him in His plan of Salvation
