A South African businessman was surprised when the police called him about his 1988 Toyota Corolla. Derick Goosen was surprised to learn that the car had been recovered at a vehicle roadblock in the northern part of the country. Goosen hadn’t thought about the car in years because it was stolen in 1993 and never recovered. The vehicle had been seized after an officer noticed that the engine number had been scratched off. The officer was able to reconstruct the number and eventually traced the car back to Goosen, the original owner. Goosen was surprised and happy to get the vehicle back. He said, “I’m going to wash it and drive around in it. Everything inside is still in perfect order. I can’t believe it.”—Jim L. Wilson and by Jim Sandell.
