Introduction

Greetings…
We have been studying different lessons on the theme, “Fruit Bearing.”
As Christians we are being judged by God as to whether or not we are bearing fruit for Christ and if we are not we will be cut off from Christ.
John 15:1–2 (ESV)
1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.
Over the last few weeks we have been looking at the most important fruit we could bear, the “Fruit of the Spirit.”
Galatians 5:22–23 ESV
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Having already examined love, joy, and peace, we find ourselves today diving into the what it means to have “Fruitful Patience.”
Within the New Testament there are three main Greek words found to be translated as “patience” within the scriptures.
We have the Greek word “ὑπομονή” or “hypomone” which is found 32 times in the New Testament.
Luke 8:15 ESV
15 As for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience.
We have the Greek word “μακροθυμία” or “makrothymia” which is found 14 times in the New Testament.
Galatians 5:22 (ESV)
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness
We have the Greek word “μακροθυμέω” or “makrothmeo” which is found 10 times in the New Testament.
1 Corinthians 13:4 ESV
4 Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant
With this in mind let’s examine our lesson for today.

Impatience

A Lack Of Faith.

Throughout biblical history we see people struggle with their faith in God and/or his promises.
Abraham and Sarah both struggled with their faith in the promise God made concerning them having a son together.
Genesis 16:1–2 ESV
1 Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. She had a female Egyptian servant whose name was Hagar. 2 And Sarai said to Abram, “Behold now, the Lord has prevented me from bearing children. Go in to my servant; it may be that I shall obtain children by her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.
Genesis 17:17 ESV
17 Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed and said to himself, “Shall a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old? Shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?”
Genesis 18:12 ESV
12 So Sarah laughed to herself, saying, “After I am worn out, and my lord is old, shall I have pleasure?”
Israel who had witnessed the Egyptian Pharaoh release them from slavery once miracle after miracle forced him to concede, and who walked across the Red Sea after God parted it on dry land became impatient with God due to their lack of faith.
Numbers 21:4–5 ESV
4 From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom. And the people became impatient on the way. 5 And the people spoke against God and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this worthless food.”
Naaman, a Gentile captain of the army of Aram or Syria had leprosy and heard from his Hebrew slave girl about an Israelite prophet of God that could heal him of his leprosy. When Naaman was told by Elisa what God said he needed to do to be healed he became impatient and angry with what was said and left in a rage.
2 Kings 5:11–12 ESV
11 But Naaman was angry and went away, saying, “Behold, I thought that he would surely come out to me and stand and call upon the name of the Lord his God, and wave his hand over the place and cure the leper. 12 Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them and be clean?” So he turned and went away in a rage.
The reality is, being impatient with God and his word leads to an impatience with God’s people.
This is certainly the cause of all sorts of conflicts within the church.

A Lack Of Self-Control.

Though a lack of faith can lead one to be impatient with God we can also simply lack “self-control” which is of course a sin in and of itself.
Proverbs 25:28 ESV
28 A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.
There are many instances within the scriptures of this.
Esau’s impatience cost him his birthright.
Genesis 25:30 ESV
30 And Esau said to Jacob, “Let me eat some of that red stew, for I am exhausted!” (Therefore his name was called Edom.)
Saul’s impatience lost him his kingdom.
1 Samuel 13:8–9 ESV
8 He waited seven days, the time appointed by Samuel. But Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and the people were scattering from him. 9 So Saul said, “Bring the burnt offering here to me, and the peace offerings.” And he offered the burnt offering.
1 Samuel 13:13–14 ESV
13 And Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the command of the Lord your God, with which he commanded you. For then the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. 14 But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought out a man after his own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.”

Summary

John Calvin once wrote…
“I have not so great a struggle with my vices, great and numerous as they are, as I have with my impatience.”
Impatience is not what God wants from his children, no he wants us to have…

Patience

Steadfast Enduring.

Patience is being able to endure the things of this life that will lead us to the next life.
Luke 21:19 ESV
19 By your endurance you will gain your lives.
Patience is being able to steadfastly hope in our Lord Jesus the Christ even during persecutions.
1 Thessalonians 1:3 ESV
3 remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.
2 Thessalonians 1:4 ESV
4 Therefore we ourselves boast about you in the churches of God for your steadfastness and faith in all your persecutions and in the afflictions that you are enduring.
Patience is that which we must pursue & put on.
1 Timothy 6:11 ESV
11 But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness.
Colossians 3:12 (ESV)
12 Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience
This steadfast endurance only is pursed through an understanding of…

Jesus’ Longsuffering.

We often are reminded within the inspired word of Jesus’ patience or longsuffering for us to mimic.
2 Peter 3:15 (ESV)
15 And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him
1 Timothy 1:16 ESV
16 But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life.
Jesus was patient or longsuffering with his creation.
As the song goes, “he could have called ten thousand angels, be he died alone, for you and me.”

Summary

Conclusion

v.
Isaiah 59:1–2 ESV
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; 2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
Philippians 2:6–7 ESV
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
Romans 10:17 ESV
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
Hebrews 11:6 ESV
6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
Acts 17:30 ESV
30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,
Matthew 10:32–33 NKJV
32 “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. 33 But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.
2 Thessalonians 1:8 ESV
8 in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
1 Corinthians 15:1–4 ESV
1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
Romans 6:3–5 ESV
3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
1 John 1:7 ESV
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
