Terms we need to know
Sheol
Hades
The Boson of Abraham
Tartarus
What is Sheol?
SHEOL (שאול, sh'wl). The ancient Hebrew realm of the dead.
“Sheol” is the most common word for the afterlife in the Bible, appearing 65 times in the Old Testament. Biblical passages are the only source of information regarding Sheol.
2 Samuel 12:23 CSB
But now that he is dead, why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I’ll go to him, but he will never return to me.”
What is Tartarus?
Tartarus - the deepest abyss in Hades
An “abyss” is a deep or bottomless chasm.
Revelation 20:1–3 CSB
Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven holding the key to the abyss and a great chain in his hand. He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. He threw him into the abyss, closed it, and put a seal on it so that he would no longer deceive the nations until the thousand years were completed. After that, he must be released for a short time.
Luke 8:30–31 CSB
“What is your name?” Jesus asked him. “Legion,” he said, because many demons had entered him. And they begged him not to banish them to the abyss.
Where did the Old Testament saints go when they died?
Was heaven open yet?
Matthew 16:16-20 “Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Jesus responded, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but my Father in heaven. And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will have been loosed in heaven.” Then he gave the disciples orders to tell no one that he was the Messiah.”
John 14:6 CSB
Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
John 14:3 CSB
If I go away and prepare a place for you, I will come again and take you to myself, so that where I am you may be also.
Heaven was not open until Jesus died for a payment for sin.
So where did they go?
Luke 16:19–31 CSB
“There was a rich man who would dress in purple and fine linen, feasting lavishly every day. But a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, was lying at his gate. He longed to be filled with what fell from the rich man’s table, but instead the dogs would come and lick his sores. One day the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. And being in torment in Hades, he looked up and saw Abraham a long way off, with Lazarus at his side. ‘Father Abraham!’ he called out, ‘Have mercy on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this flame!’ “ ‘Son,’ Abraham said, ‘remember that during your life you received your good things, just as Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here, while you are in agony. Besides all this, a great chasm has been fixed between us and you, so that those who want to pass over from here to you cannot; neither can those from there cross over to us.’ “ ‘Father,’ he said, ‘then I beg you to send him to my father’s house—because I have five brothers—to warn them, so that they won’t also come to this place of torment.’ “But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; they should listen to them.’ “ ‘No, father Abraham,’ he said. ‘But if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’ “But he told him, ‘If they don’t listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not be persuaded if someone rises from the dead.’ ”
So why is it important for us to now about these things.
Are souls are eternal what happens to them is up to us.
