How to Inherit Eternal Life
I man name Bo that has become a friend of mine , we each take time to share encuragment with each other almost weekly , Bo said that the Good Samaritan is a timeless and concrete example of love being all emcompassing in Gods Kingdom.
Luke 10 25-37
25 And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 He said to him, “What is written in the law? What is your reading of it?” 27 So he answered and said, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’ ” 28 And He said to him, “You have answered rightly; do this and you will live.”
Parable of the Good Samaritan
29 But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30 Then Jesus answered and said: “A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 Likewise a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side. 33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion. 34 So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.’ 36 So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?” 37 And he said, “He who showed mercy on him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”
In this passage, you have a Lawyer TESTING and ASKING Jesus Christ a quistion. (Saying ) Teacher what Should I do to Inharit eternal life?
Jesus did what we all should do he sent him back to Gods living word. and said what is writen in the Law? What is your reading of it ?
So the Lawyer andswered and said ,” You shall Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength , and with all your Mind and,’ your neighor as your self.’ “ and Jesus said to him , you have answered rightly; do this and you will live
Deuternomy 6:5 and Leviticus 19:18
But this Lawyer did what so many of us do daily we want to justify our actions even when we know they are wrong,” so to Justify himself ,he said to Jesus ,” who is my neighbor . Jesus is telling the lawyer he is a man that should already know how to get eternal life because he knows the law.
Jesus tells the Story of the Samaritan man because it is highly posable that its a true story the writer Luke never staights this is a parable like he has in other places in the book of Luke.
The Jews and the Samaritans were enemeys they didn’t like one another the Jews looked down on them. It is highly likely that there were people there that day lessoning , that was part of this story and Jesus was making them think about there actions of what they did and how they acted by not loving their fellow man on the road as they passed by looked but walking by and did nothing to help. Jesus was telling them you know how God tell you to act but yet here is how you acted. Yet here is a man that you dislike because of his race, where he is from took care of a Jew one of your own.
We need to understand the road from Jerusalem to Jericho was rough and dangerus Jerusalem was some 3000 foot higher than Jericho picture the hiding places in that type of turan and the Prest and Levit most likly traveled it daily and new of the dangers. As did everyone that traveled the road most likely knew Of the dangers
Jesus is tilling this story of a man that had compassion on another man and showed him Love, ,mercy bandaged him up took him to a inn paid the inn keeper to give him a safe dry place to rest his head till he was able to take care of him self ,this Samaritan Man said he would come back and pay for all this mans debts he owed to the inn keeper for staying there .
We can spin this story many ways and as (Wierbe states the worst thing one can do is turn it into a allegory that everything stands for something. but there is danger in getting away from what the story is about . That being the question Christ was asked about, how to receive eternal live. one thing is for sure everything points to Christ in the Bible and this story points to Christ because Jesus is telling this lawyer how to receive eternal life.
By using the Samaritan a a hero Jesus takes the weapons out of the hands of the Jews because remember Jews disliked Samaritan’s ,” but yet someone they hated helped one of their fellow Jews. They were not being a good neighbor to even their fellow Jew.
The Lawyer in this story who asked this question is trying to find a new rule. a new law . Jesus is saying the law of love puts an end to legalisam . No more laws we are planly to love one another as he loved us.
I am surounded by men and weman here that have taken time out of there normal daily lives to come love on another to help in Jesus name . To be more Christ Like each and everyday. Jesus was standing right in front of them they could probably of reached out and touched him like in the story of the lady that touch Jesus’’s garment and her life changed that very day.
There is a song by 4HIM its called the Basics of Life My we each get back to the Basics and in a way that is what Jesus is telling here go back to the basics (Love one another)
Charles Spergon states most people here the word go after a sermon but do not get or do the likewise
