“I have seen the risen Lord”

Mary rushed to the room where the apostles were and told them she had seen and spoke to the Lord (20:18).
This after Mary went to prepare the body with the other women, but the body was gone (20:11-15)
Jesus revealed Himself to her through His word (20:16)
Mary had cleaved, clung to the Lord , but Jesus had a task for her to complete (20:17-18)
John 20:17–18 NKJV
17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.’ ” 18 Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that He had spoken these things to her.
(Transition) - this sets us up for tonight as we see how far we can get with the intentions of (vv.19-29)

Let God’s word be known

John 20:19 NASB95
19 So when it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
John 20:20–21 NASB95
20 And when He had said this, He showed them both His hands and His side. The disciples then rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.”
John 20:22–23 NASB95
22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 “If you forgive the sins of any, their sins have been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained.”
John 20:24–25 NASB95
24 But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples were saying to him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the imprint of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.”
John 20:26 NASB95
26 After eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors having been shut, and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.”
John 20:27–28 NASB95
27 Then He said to Thomas, “Reach here with your finger, and see My hands; and reach here your hand and put it into My side; and do not be unbelieving, but believing.” 28 Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”
John 20:29 NASB95
29 Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed.”
What do you notice in this passage? What sticks out to you?
When, where, how did Jesus appear to whom (v.19)?
Evening, first day of the week (Sunday)
Appeared in their midst
Appeared to the disciples (see v.18)
Jesus proved Himself by His wounds, then how did the disciples react (v.19)?
They rejoiced when they realized it was the Lord.
Though may not have grasped what Mary would have told them that He was yet to return to the Father, My God, their God (v.17).
Jesus had a task, and gives them a task, what is it (v.21)?
The Father has sent Me
I also send you.
Jesus then does something we find in Gen2:7; what was it He did (v.22)?
He breathed on them, in Gen2:7, the breath of life, in this passage for reception of the Holy Spirit
Be ready for questions on this. baptism of Holy Spirit if it comes up.
There is a very bold statement (v.23), what is it?
If you forgive sins, they are forgiven, if you retain, they are retained.
Hold off on any questions on this until we get there, right now just gleaning from the scripture itself.
Thomas, who was missing now is there and what does he have to say to what they told him? (vv.24-25)?
I will not believe unless . . .
How many days later does Jesus appear to the disciples again (v.26)?
Eight days from resurrection, so the next first day of the week, Sunday
Jesus told Thomas what to do (v.27), but what did Thomas do (v.28)?
Reach, touch, put your hands
Thomas declared him My Lord and My God
Jesus statement about believing and blessing, who is the blessed (v.29)?
Blessed are those who did not see yet believed.

In the midst of them

John 20:19 NKJV
19 Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
The same day, what day? Resurrection day that is when Jesus stood in the midst.
I think I want to stop just for a minute and make a clarification. Maybe you have heard that the Sabbath was changed to Sunday, or that Sunday is the Christian Sabbath. No where in scripture does it say that. The Sabbath was created for man after creation was complete (Gen2:1-3) a day of rest, a day sanctified by the Lord and made holy and then commanded it to observed (Exo20:8-11). The Sabbath was created for man (Mk2:27) and Jesus is our rest (Mt12:8) and offers rest to those who come to Him (Mt11:28-30). The Scribes, Pharisees added many restrictions to the Sabbath taking it from being a holy day to a bondage day, that was not the intentions according to (Gen2:1-3). Now back to the study. The N.T. says not to elevate or judge one day over another, or one who does (Rom14:4-5). The early church, the Jewish Christians in most, kept the Sabbath and met on the first day of the week. Some say the Catholic church changed the worship day from Saturday to Sunday, but that is not the pattern we find in the N.T. (Act20:6). Just a little side note this evening. Now back to the study.
This did not happen on the Sabbath, it happened on the first day of the week, resurrection day
Resurrection day in which he already appeared to
Mary of Magdalene (Jn20:11-18)
The other women (Mt28:9-10)
The pilgrims on road to Emmaus (Lk24:13-32)
Peter (Lk24:33-35)
We know that Peter and John had departed the tomb and went to their own homes (Jn20:10) but now they are together “that same day in the evening” and Jesus appears.
How did Jesus enter the room? We do not know. No notes of Him knocking asking to be let in, but that He appeared in their midst.
Morris said: When he tells us that the doors were ‘shut’ we should understand this to mean ‘locked’ as the following explanation, that this was due to the fear of the Jews, shows.”
Jesus gives no words of rebuke to them for abandoning Him at the cross, but offers them peace.
Trench: “Peace to you, is an assurance that there is no cause to fear, that all is well: for they (Lk24:36) were alarmed by His manifestation.”
First thing the Lord did to take them from fear to courage was to -Come to them.
The second thing He did was assure them they need not fear

Jesus peace brought Joy, instructions, gift.

Jesus offers reason to not fear to have joy (v.20)
John 20:20 NKJV
20 When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.
Jesus fulfills the promise of peace (Jn14:27); and this is resolved peace
Sins forgiven, eternal life given
Sin had been defeated at the resurrection 1Cor15:55-57); the proof stood before them in their midst. Something they had heard about from Mary (Jn20:18); the pilgrims on the road (Lk24:33-35). Now it went from words that seemed unbelievable now turn to words of joy
Third thing Jesus did to take them from fear to courage - was to commission them (v.21)
John 20:21 NKJV
21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.”
Be ready for questions from Luke where is speaks of many in the room. This is not a special commissioning, ordination of the disciples (the 10 there) but a call to service to all who were there then, and a call today to the disciples.
Forth thing Jesus did was equip them (v.22)
John 20:22 NKJV
22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
Jesus breathed life on them, reminiscent of (Gen2:7) also can see this same breath in (Eze37:9) breath into dry bones
Given the Holy Spirit
Bruce: “At an earlier stage in Jesus’ ministry the evangelist had said, ‘The Spirit was not yet present, because Jesus had not yet been glorified’ (Jn7:37): Now the time for imparting the Spirit had come.
Jesus is breathing new spiritual life into them. The power would come, but it was not yet.
The Spirit came from working on them, to being in them, and the upon, the working through them was yet to come on Pentecost.
(summary) I thought maybe we would get further tonight, but the next part has much to say too. So to sum this up.
On resurrection day Jesus made several appearances (Mary, the other women, The pilgrims, Peter and now the disciples minus Judas and Thomas).
On resurrection Day in an upper room in fear they are given things to take from fear to courage.
Jesus came to them
Jesus assured them
Jesus commissioned them
Jesus equipped them.
