Introduction
Good morning Church! Today we gather to explore the profound and transformative power of our Savior, Jesus Christ. In the pages of Luke's Gospel, we encounter a narrative brimming with lessons of faith, healing, and redemption—a narrative that resonates through the corridors of time to touch our hearts and souls today. A story of borrowed faith and relational evangelism from four men that change the course of another man’s life.
Imagine the scene: a crowded room pulsating with anticipation, with Pharisees and teachers of the law from every village of Galilee and Judea, along with curious onlookers from Jerusalem, gathered to witness the teachings of Jesus. Mark’s Gospel tells us the house was packed to the point that no one could get through the door. Among them, Jesus stands, exuding a presence of divine authority, his words resounding with the promise of hope and healing.
Exposition

The Power of Jesus to Heal

Luke 5:17 ESV
17 On one of those days, as he was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there, who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was with him to heal.
Do you believe in the transformative power of Jesus to heal?
Do you believe that He can mend the broken pieces of our lives, both physically and spiritually?
Jesus proclaimed His mission in Luke 4:18–19, declaring His anointing to preach the gospel to the poor, to heal the brokenhearted, to deliver the captives, and to restore sight to the blind. His ministry extends beyond the physical realm, delving deep into the recesses of our hearts and souls.

Power to heal emotional brokenness.

Psalm 147:3 ESV
3 He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

Jesus is the love source that heals the heart.

Jesus is the rest for your soul.

Matthew 11:28–29 ESV
28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

Power to heal physical brokenness.

Jesus heals the physical for spiritual results.

Physical healing is consistent with Relational Evangelism.
Scriptural healing is found in the context of evangelism.

Jesus heals the saints through prayer and agreement.

James 5:13–15 ESV
13 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

Power to heal spiritual brokenness.

Jesus heals our affliction of sin.

1 Peter 2:21 ESV
21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.
1 Peter 2:24–25 ESV
24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. 25 For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

Jesus heals our relationship with God.

The Power of Borrowed Faith

As we journey deeper into the text, we encounter the profound concept of borrowed faith—faith that moves mountains, faith that transcends barriers, faith that compels us to action on behalf of others. Just as the paralyzed man was carried by his friends to Jesus, so too are we called to carry one another in times of need, to remove obstacles that hinder people from encountering the Healer.
Luke 5:18–19 ESV
18 And behold, some men were bringing on a bed a man who was paralyzed, and they were seeking to bring him in and lay him before Jesus, 19 but finding no way to bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down with his bed through the tiles into the midst before Jesus.

Faith in Jesus will move you to action for your friends.

Faith, Hope, and Love are all action words in the Christian community.

They were willing to remove any barrier that would keep him from the healer.

What barriers are you willing to move for your friends to meet Jesus.
Political Barriers
Religious Barriers
Social Barriers
Fear Barriers

Jesus was moved by the faith of a friend.

Luke 5:20 ESV
20 And when he saw their faith, he said, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.”

Spiritual healing is more important than physical healing.

Luke 5:21–22 ESV
21 And the scribes and the Pharisees began to question, saying, “Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” 22 When Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answered them, “Why do you question in your hearts?
If all that Jesus did for this man was forgive his sin and bring him into a restored relationship with God that would have been enough to secure his eternal state.

Jesus used the physical healing to illustrate the spiritual healing.

Luke 5:23–26 ESV
23 Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? 24 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the man who was paralyzed—“I say to you, rise, pick up your bed and go home.” 25 And immediately he rose up before them and picked up what he had been lying on and went home, glorifying God. 26 And amazement seized them all, and they glorified God and were filled with awe, saying, “We have seen extraordinary things today.”
