John 12:27–36 NASB95
“Now My soul has become troubled; and what shall I say, ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour. “Father, glorify Your name.” Then a voice came out of heaven: “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.” So the crowd of people who stood by and heard it were saying that it had thundered; others were saying, “An angel has spoken to Him.” Jesus answered and said, “This voice has not come for My sake, but for your sakes. “Now judgment is upon this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. “And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to Myself.” But He was saying this to indicate the kind of death by which He was to die. The crowd then answered Him, “We have heard out of the Law that the Christ is to remain forever; and how can You say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this Son of Man?” So Jesus said to them, “For a little while longer the Light is among you. Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness will not overtake you; he who walks in the darkness does not know where he goes. “While you have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you may become sons of Light.” These things Jesus spoke, and He went away and hid Himself from them.

Introduction

It’s good to be reminded of Jesus
He still has the name that is exalted above every other name
He still has the name where by we must be saved
He still has a name that means salvation
Satan is trying to take away the name: He does not want people to know who Jesus is

But we know who Jesus is

Alpha and Omega, Beginning and the End, Christ, Deliverer, Eternal One, Friend, Good Shepherd, Immanuel, Just One, King of kings, Lord of lords, Messianic Master, Name above all names, Only begotten God, Passover, Quickening spirit, Saviour, The Truth, Upholder of all things, Victory, The Way, Exalted one, Yesterday today and forever, Hope in Zion
John’s Gospel is unique because he deals with early Gnostic-like teaching that challenged the nature of Christ.

This was a doctrinal issue in the church. We make every disagreement a doctrinal issue.

But there were teachings that challenged the nature of Christ and they had to be dealt with head on.
John 20:30–31 “Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.

Context

Jesus speaks of His death in the words “My hour is come” vs. 23
To Mary He said my hour had not come (Jn 2:4)
To the Jews seeking to kill him, His hour had not come (Jn 7:30)
To the Pharisees that he taught “no one seized Him because His hour had not yet come (Jn 8:20)

Glorified is use to express the fulfillment of God’s plan for salvation. The completion of the salvific plan means glorification

John 17:4 ““I glorified You on the earth, having accomplished the work which You have given Me to do.”
John 7:37–38 “Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’ ”” John 7:39 “But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.”
Glorified is the fulfillment of the plan on the cross (and beyond)

The Plan led Jesus to the Cross - And it Had to be The Cross

# 1 The Power of the Cross

When you see the cross, you need to see POWER
Where do you see POWER?
John 12:31 ““Now judgment is upon this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out.”
We know judgement is connected to his death because of verse 27
The ruler of the world is the devil (2 Cor 4:4)
Cast out - to cause a significant change of state
Satan has power, but he doesn’t have all power.
He was power when you abide in sin Ephesians 2:2 “in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience.”
He has power over death Hebrews 2:14 “Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil,”
This is why you need to see power in the cross because at the cross Jesus dealt with sin and three days later He dealt with death

The cross ensured that Jesus stripped satan of his power - Satan bit His heel, but Jesus crushed his Head

# 2 The Paradox of the Cross

A pardox is a seeminly contradictory statement but it’s true - it contains two opposite facts, things that don’t go together but they do
Where do we see a paradox?
John 12:32 ““And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to Myself.””
**The cross was a place of humiliation (something no one likes to associate with) yet Jesus says, that’s the thing that will draw men to me.
The cross will pave a way for men to come to me
The Cross meant both death and life
The object of hate demonstrated love
The cross was a penalty but also a pardon
The was the end of life but beginning of life
The cross cost everything but nothing
What was a curse is also a blessing
Galatians 3:13 “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”—”
How was the Law a curse? Deuteronomy 27:26 “‘Cursed is he who does not confirm the words of this law by doing them.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’” Christ did this by becoming a curse
How did Christ become a curse? Deuteronomy 21:22–23 ““If a man has committed a sin worthy of death and he is put to death, and you hang him on a tree, his corpse shall not hang all night on the tree, but you shall surely bury him on the same day (for he who is hanged is accursed of God), so that you do not defile your land which the Lord your God gives you as an inheritance.”
Jews had a belief, that a man who wronged his people and gave them up too a foreign power deserved to hang.
A cross just didn’t make sense - BUT IT HAD TO BE THE CROSS

# 3 The Purpose of the Cross

John 12:33 “But He was saying this to indicate the kind of death by which He was to die.”
This detail is why I’m saying, IT HAD TO BE THE CROSS
There was no other way
Jesus was killed bearing the thing that was killing us
There is a parallel to this in John 3:14 ““As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up;”
[In the wilderness Num 21:4-9]
The thing that was killing them was now saving them
2 Corinthians 5:21 “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
Jesus bore the thing that was killing us in order to save us

It Had to be the Cross

Isaiah 53:4–6 “Surely our griefs He Himself bore, And our sorrows He carried; Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted. But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed. All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him.”
Hebrews 2:18 “For since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted.”
Hebrews 5:8–9 “Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered. And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation,”

#Bonus Point

This is why we preach the cross
1 Corinthians 1:17 “For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not in cleverness of speech, so that the cross of Christ would not be made void.”

You can’t void something that is already empty

The cross has something in it
Would you submit to someone who did all of that for you?
