Inheritance

The Lawyer found out that you cant work for your inheritance
there is no possible way to be good enough
Romans 3:23 LSB
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
next we saw Martha working to please Jesus
Mary Pleasing Jesus by just sitting at His feet
Mary was receiving part of her inheritance
now Luke is showing us another part of our inheritance
by communing with the God of the universe
We are looking at the Father who gave us new life
who gave us a new family
in V 1 the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray
so Jesus taught them the outline of prayer
the first part of prayer is toward God the Father
the second part is asking for or selves
Prayer is another product of our inheritance
but prayer is also something that we choose to do
Today we are looking at the Person of the Godhead the Father
The one who Jesus communed with when He prayed
we see this over and over in the New Testament except for once that we will look at later
Read V 1-2

Who Can Pray?

Who can call God the Father, Father?
In the Old Testament the Israelites God was never referred to as the Father
in fact they never called God by His name
when they wanted to speak of God it was a shortened version of the name
or an attribute of God
But when Jesus taught to pray it was more personal more intimate
Abba father is what a child would call her father
Daddy
this was very new to the disciples extreme
this calling the almighty-- Daddy, Father
this brought a whole new level of intimacy
God has gone from being a far away Judge to a close respected family member
but who made it that way?
lets get back to the question Who can pray?
and who made it that someone can pray?
when we are born we are
John 8:44 LSB
“You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
If we are not of the Father in Heaven we cant assume to be able to call Him Father
so there had to have something change
John 3:3 LSB
Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
John 1:12–13 LSB
But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
We have been adopted into the family
Galatians 4:5 LSB
so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.
and because we are adopted we can call Him Daddy
Romans 8:15 LSB
For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons by whom we cry out, “Abba! Father!”
When God created Adam he was considered God’s son
now we have regained what Adam lost
Luke has left out the beginning word OUR
Matthew 6 Jesus said in the sermon on the Mount
with the word OUR this associates Jesus with us
as we are now the sons of God and
Romans 8:17 LSB
and if children, also heirs, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.
Because we are NOW a child of God
Because we are NOW have been Born from above
Because we have NOW been adopted into the family
We can confidently call God our Father/Daddy
But after all that I said we cant come before the throne of God unless we come humble
we cant come in a disrespectful way
like referring Him as the man upstairs
the big guy
He has given us an incredible honor. also brought us into the family
but The Father is still

Almighty God

the Sovereign of the universe
so we need to Hallowed his name
His name we must keep HOLY
set apart
Phillip Keller on hallowed - Putting it into plain language, what Jesus is saying in this prayer is, “Father, may Your person, Your identity, Your character, Your reputation, Your very being always be honored.” ( A layman looks at the Lord's prayer)
the people of Israel profaned the name of God so God scattered them to the nations
Ezekiel 36:22–23 LSB
“Therefore say to the house of Israel, ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh, “It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for My holy name, which you have profaned among the nations, to which you have come. “I will prove the holiness of My great name which has been profaned among the nations, which you have profaned in their midst. Then the nations will know that I am Yahweh,” declares Lord Yahweh, “when I prove Myself holy among you in their sight.
praying that God’s name will be Haloed is more than showing the utmost respect when we come to Him
but it is showing utmost respect in all that we do
Martin Luther (Greater Catechism) asked “How is it [God’s name] hallowed amongst us?” Answer “When our life and doctrine are truly Christian”
we are asking God to make people treat His name Holy
which is done less and less today
the names of God
Name of the LORD is a Strong Tower
Elohim: My Creator -
Elyon: Most High God - Sovereign Over All
Roi: God Who Sees
LORD of hosts (of armies)
Mekeddeshem (M'Kaddesh) LORD Who Sanctifies
The LORD Our Banner
The LORD our Peace
Jehovah Jireh: The LORD Will Provide
Jehovah Rapha: The LORD our Healer
Jehovah Roi: The Lord is My Shepherd
Jehovah Ezer: The LORD our Helper
The LORD is Our Stronghold
God has many different names that describe Him and His character
all of these need to be honored
we want these to be honored by the world
this what this prayer begins with
not just words that are said without meaning
we can address God as our Father
someone we are close to and fully trust
The Almighty who
Gave us a second birth
Made us a joint aire with His Son Jesus
Adopted us as His child
He allows us to come into His presence and talk with Him about anything
but when we come to Him it has to be with Honor and respect
to glorify His name
