Portion Size Matters

2 Kings 2:9 KJV 1900
9 And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.
The Double Portion was the eldest son’s portion, the portion allotted to the heir. Jacob treated his son Joseph as his eldest son by giving him a double portion. Elkanah, as a mark of his special affection for his wife Hannah, gave her a double portion of sacrificial food. Job received a double portion when the Lord turned his captivity.
The Lord Jesus is portrayed as God’s Firstborn, entitled to a double portion, and we are joint-heirs with Him.
How many of you want a double portion this morning?
I want to cover three point about Elisha receiving a double portion from Elijah this morning,
God worked in various ways through Elijah. Because Elijah was open to God, he was used by God.
Elisha would need God’s power to continue God’s work. Elisha worked for fourteen years with Elijah.
1. POWER REVEALED—vv. 1–8
Elisha followed him everywhere he went. We as Christians are to follow Jesus and keep our eyes on Him.
Jesus said in John 5:19 “19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.”
How can you see His power revealed if you are not looking?
We need to look for the hand of God moving in and around us!
2. POWER REQUESTED—vv. 9–11
In Psalms 78, and verse 41 the bible says that the children of Isreal limited the Holy one of Isreal!
Don’t limit the our God! Ask him and He will give it to you!
Jesus said in John 16:24 “24 Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.”
Jesus wants you to ask him the you may receive so that your joy maybe full. You have not because you ask not!
Jesus is always the more and never the less!
He has more grace than sin!
He has more mercy than mistakes!
He has more love than hate!
He has more forgiveness than your mess!
He has more power than your weakness!
He is all powerful! All things are possible with Him!
He is always the more!
Ask Him and you will receive!
In verse 10 Elijah told Elisha “if you see me then it will be so” I believe that they had to see eye to eye for Elisha to receive the double portion.
Isaiah 52:8 “8 Thy watchmen shall lift up the voice; With the voice together shall they sing: For they shall see eye to eye, When the Lord shall bring again Zion.”
When our eye sees what His eyes see He will bless us with a double portion of His power! The mantel of His glory will rest on those who are looking for God!
3. POWER RECEIVED—vv. 12–15
God gives power to men to do His work. He never gives power to man so that it may be used for selfish reasons. Jesus said that we could do greater works—
John 14:12 “12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.”
Allow God to work through you.
Acts 1:8 KJV 1900
8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
The power to be witnesses! Witnesses of what? Unto me…..
Witnesses of His power revealed! The more you see His power the more you move in His power!
The more God shows you, the more he releases to you!
1 John 2:27 KJV 1900
27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.
The anointing is the mantel of the Lord upon your life! With the anointing all things are possible!
The anointing gives you supernatural intelligence, Supernatural strength, Supernatural abilities for healing, making a way where there seems to be no way, planting the seed of faith, and the list goes on!
Gods Power is Unlimited!
God is almighty and all other power is derived from him and subject to him. Much that the Bible says is summed up in the words of 1 Chronicles 29:11.
1 Chronicles 29:11 KJV 1900
11 Thine, O Lord, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O Lord, and thou art exalted as head above all.
Aren’t you glad He is our father?
CON: God is willing to pour out a double portion this morning. How many of you will receive it? I would like to pray for you this morning for a double portion of His Spirit!
