“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.

1st Antithesis - Anger & Murder
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’
“You shall not commit adultery.
The Scribes & Pharasee’s condemned the outward act
They held a strong view on Adultery (Deut 5:18, Deut 22:13-30)
But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
“lustful intent”
more than a modest look
“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.”
Covetousness and Lust are similar in that they both involve a strong desire for something, they differ in their focus.
Covetousness is focused on possessing something that belongs to someone else
Leads to: envy, greed and theft
Lust is focused on satisfying one’s own desires, often at the expense of others

But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
Lust - strong sexual desire or craving
Lust for Power / Dominance
Leads to:
objectification
unhealthy relationships
even sexual assault
lust - to possess and dominate her completely, to use for his own pleasure
In the proper setting sex is a wonderful gift of God
avoid an unhealthy expectation
“lustful intent” is to have desires designed only to be between a husband and wife
It is wrong for the unmarried as well as the married
To the unmarried and the widows I say that it is good for them to remain single, as I am. But if they cannot exercise self-control, they should marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion.
inflamed - sexual lust or fervor (intense feeling)

Jesus did not intend for this to be taken literally
God provided strict and deadly consequences for sin in the old testament
With your life on the line what would you do to ensure you did not fall into sin?
Jesus points out to them that God was pointing to the eternal reality of their decisions
What would you do to ensure your eteneral state? and not be thrown into hell?
Nothing, no matter how pressious, should be allowed to doom our glorious destiny
Sin is a destructive force that should not be pampered
Instead it must be “put to death”
Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.
Indecision is deadly
Halfway measures work havoc
Surgery must be radical
Paul to Timothy (2 Timothy 2:17) pointed to sin in the church being like gangrene
Temptation should be flung aside immediately and decisively
What we fill our minds with matters:
books & pictures
films & songs
social friendships
baneful (harmful/destructive) habits
shadow-boxing will never do
But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.

Paul affirms this battle against sin is experienced by Christian leaders
they understand the challenges believers face
