When the hands are laid on the victim, the one making the offering has to take it by faith that the victim will, in God’s merciful provision, symbolically express what the offerer deserves but is now excused by virtue of another who substitutes life for life.45
This burnt offering by fire58 was “an aroma pleasing to the LORD” (1:9). The phrase rêaḥ nîḥôaḥ lyhwh, “aroma pleasing to the LORD,” should not be understood in a physical sense connected with the sense of smell, for it was an archaic expression describing satisfaction with the offering.59 As Harris describes: “The point is that the sacrifice gives an aroma of tranquility by bringing peace between God and the worshiper.”60 Hence, prescribed worship is to bring pleasure to God.
The animals were brought here and sacrificed, in plain view not only of the priests, but of other worshipers and others passing by the Tabernacle entrance. This aspect of Israelite worship was thus a public proclamation of devotion to God.
