What is pain? Dictionary.com puts it this way: physical suffering or distress, as due to injury, illness, etc., or a distressing sensation in a particular part of the body:
There are different types of pain as well as degrees of pain.
Physical pain- Ex: Stepping on Lego Brick, Migrane
Emotional pain- Ex. Getting Dumped, Failing a class
Spiritual Pain- Ex. Conviction of Sin, Seeing others suffer
Survey: Which hurts worse:

Misconception: Pain is always bad

The truth is no normal person enjoys pain. I mean there is the occasional nut who has issues. But lets face it most of us when met with pain, we do whatever we can to either ease the pain or get out of it. And sometimes that’s not always possible. Advil doesn’t stop some pains. Kissing boo boos doesn’t work as you get older.
Because of the affliction of pain, we as humans have developed this misconception. But take a minute and think about why God created us with the ability to feel pain. Pain helps us know something is wrong. Imagine if you will that you couldn’t feel any pain. How would you know if something was too hot to eat? You pick it up feel nothing, drop it in your mouth still feel nothing, enjoy your roasted marshmellow have a grand time. Later you brush your teeth and see that the top of your mouth has been burned and damaged, but you never even realized it because there was no pain. Pain helps us know that something is wrong.

Illumination: God uses pain to shape us

Hebrews 12:3–11 ESV
Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted. In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons? “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.” It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
Fatherly Disipline: again not a concept people like, but it is very neccesary. Alot of the pain that we experiance in life, the emotional and spiritual pain. is there to help us grow.
Sometimes its concequences for our choices. You do dumb thing experiance pain, and hopefully learn not to do dumb thing again.

Sometimes pain comes from Persecution. When the lost world fights against what is right.
Romans 5:3–5 ESV
Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
Sometimes Pain comes outta nowhere. You didn’t do anything to cause it. In our broken world, sometimes painful things just happen.
God isn’t trying to hurt us when pain comes. Rather he uses pain to help us grow.
Romans 8:28 ESV
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
Work together for good. Doesn’t mean that it is good inherantly. But God is strong enough that he can take something bad and use it for Good.
Genesis 50:20 ESV
As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.
Closing Illistration: Salt- Sodium Cloride.. It is made of Sodium and Clorine Both elements by themeselves are harmful to human life, but worked together sodium cloride is amazing as a flavoring and a preservative.
