Psalm 118:24 (KJV 1900)
24 This is the day which the Lord hath made; We will rejoice and be glad in it.
How many of you have heard this verse?
How many of you believe the Lord made this day?
How many of you believe we should rejoice in every day?
You are absolutely correct.
However, did you know this Psalm is actually referring to certain day that we should rejoice in and we are nearing the celebration of this day?
This famous passage actually deals with a prophecy that has already been fulfilled.
THE PSALMIST’S PROPHECY (118:22–23, 26): The psalmist foretells two events in Jesus’ life.
Notice Psalm 118:22-23
Psalm 118:22–23 KJV 1900
22 The stone which the builders refused Is become the head stone of the corner. 23 This is the Lord’s doing; It is marvellous in our eyes.
Jesus actually quoted this verse
Matthew 21:42 KJV 1900
42 Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?
His rejection by Israel (118:22–23): See Matthew 21:42.
When did this statement take place?
Psalm 118:24–26 (KJV 1900)
24 This is the day which the Lord hath made; We will rejoice and be glad in it.
25 Save now, I beseech thee, O Lord: O Lord, I beseech thee, send now prosperity.
26 Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the Lord: We have blessed you out of the house of the Lord.
Now, let’s go back to Matthew 21:9
Matthew 21:9 (KJV 1900)
9 And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.
His triumphal entry (118:26): See Matthew 21:9.
Psalm 118:27–29 (KJV 1900)
27 God is the Lord, which hath shewed us light: Bind the sacrifice with cords, Even unto the horns of the altar.
28 Thou art my God, and I will praise thee: Thou art my God, I will exalt thee.
29 O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: For his mercy endureth for ever.
What prompted this Psalm?
Psalm 118:1–4 (KJV 1900)
1 O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: Because his mercy endureth for ever.
2 Let Israel now say, That his mercy endureth for ever.
3 Let the house of Aaron now say, That his mercy endureth for ever.
4 Let them now that fear the Lord say, That his mercy endureth for ever.
Mercy is his unfailing love.
Grace is God’s giving of Love.
Mercy is God’s withholding because of love.
Our salvation rests on the unfailing love and faithfulness of God. Because of His immeasurable love, God gave His only begotten Son to redeem us (Jn. 3:16; Ro. 5:8). Just as God was faithful to His people under the old covenant, He is faithful to us under the new covenant. In fact, Scripture declares that we have a better covenant with better promises than Israel had under the old covenant (He. 8:6).
Hebrews 8:6 (KJV 1900)
6 But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.
We are saved, forgiven, and secure because God is faithful. He will not fail us, forget us, or cast us away. Every day, we should give Him thanks for His goodness and unfailing love. We should also trust Him completely in all circumstances with full assurance that He will never fail us.
Notice in this praise the Psalmist had pain.
Psalm 118:5 (KJV 1900)
5 I called upon the Lord in distress: The Lord answered me, and set me in a large place.
Even in Pain the Psalmist experienced Peace.
Psalm 118:6–9 (KJV 1900)
6 The Lord is on my side; I will not fear: What can man do unto me?
7 The Lord taketh my part with them that help me: Therefore shall I see my desire upon them that hate me.
8 It is better to trust in the Lord Than to put confidence in man.
9 It is better to trust in the Lord Than to put confidence in princes.
Where is your trust?
Because we trust in everything but Jesus, we never experience his power.
Psalm 118:10–13 (KJV 1900)
10 All nations compassed me about: But in the name of the Lord will I destroy them.
11 They compassed me about; yea, they compassed me about: But in the name of the Lord I will destroy them.
12 They compassed me about like bees; They are quenched as the fire of thorns: For in the name of the Lord I will destroy them.
13 Thou hast thrust sore at me that I might fall: But the Lord helped me.
The Power of God causes Praise.
Psalm 118:14–17 KJV 1900
14 The Lord is my strength and song, And is become my salvation. 15 The voice of rejoicing and salvation is in the tabernacles of the righteous: The right hand of the Lord doeth valiantly. 16 The right hand of the Lord is exalted: The right hand of the Lord doeth valiantly. 17 I shall not die, but live, And declare the works of the Lord.
Sometimes, it is not power but purging that shows in our life.
Psalm 118:18 (KJV 1900)
18 The Lord hath chastened me sore: But he hath not given me over unto death.
Therefore, we see the Psalmists Pledge.
Psalm 118:19–21 (KJV 1900)
19 Open to me the gates of righteousness: I will go into them, and I will praise the Lord:
20 This gate of the Lord, Into which the righteous shall enter.
21 I will praise thee: for thou hast heard me, And art become my salvation.
Even though they went from crowning Him to crucifying Him his mercy still endured forever.
