Scripture Intro:

Series in the Psalms.
Looked at all sorts of psalms.
To set the stage for today’s psalm...
Psalms 111-113 all begin with the word “Hallelujah”
Translated in English as “Praise the Lord”
That is also one of the Hebrew words that we have brought over into our usage.
“Hallelujah” … a word of praise and thanksgiving.
Psalm 113 begins a section until Psalm 118,
these psalms together are called the “Egyptian Hallel”.
The “Hallelujah” of God’s people b/c he brought them out of Egypt (salvation).
Prior to them coming out (Exodus),
what was the pinnacle moment that preceded their exit from Egypt?
Passover.
Celebrated by the nation of Israel every year.
Psalms 113 and 114 were sung before the Passover meal.
Psalms 115-118 were sung after the meal.
So, since Jesus and his disciples shared the Passover meal on Thursday night...
and it concludes with them singing a hymn together.
Psalm 118 was probably the last psalm Jesus sung before his arrest and crucifixion.

Intro:

Triumphal Entry
Matthew 21:1-11
On the Sunday of Passion Week (the week of Jesus’ death and resurrection)...
he entered into Jerusalem for what has become known as the Triumphal Entry.
As he approached Jerusalem,
he sent two of his disciples ahead of him...
to find a donkey and it’s colt.
“Untie them and bring them to me.”
“If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’”
Matthew 21:4–5 ESV
This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying, “Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’ ”
Zechariah 9:9 ESV
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
They brought the donkey and the colt to Jesus,
put cloaks over them, and Jesus sat on them.
As he rode into Jerusalem...
Matthew 21:8 ESV
Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.
Matthew 21:9 ESV
And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”
Easter Week begins with a celebration.
The people are excited.
Son of David...
from Matthew 1:1
Matthew 1:1 ESV
The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
“Son of David”
A title of Kingship… in the line of David.
