The Horrific Nature of Crucifixion

The Lexham Bible Dictionary Fixing the Victim to the Stake

Seneca describes a similar image: “Can anyone be found who would prefer wasting away in pain, dying limb by limb, or letting out his life drop by drop, rather than expiring once for all? Can any man be found willing to be fastened to the accursed tree, long sickly, already deformed, swelling with ugly tumours on chest and shoulders, and draw the breath of life amid long—drawn-out agony?” (Ep. 101; translation in Gummere, Seneca). This text indicates that death by crucifixion took a long time. The “ugly tumors” were probably the result of the precrucifixion tortures.

King James Version (Chapter 23)
33 And when they were come to the place, which is called ||Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left
The Crucifixion was a historical event that has implications on human history.
Born in a manger and crucified as a malefactor, Jesus now controls the destinies of the civilized world, and rules a spiritual empire which embraces one-third of the inhabitants of the globe.
Philip Schaff
The Crucifixion of Christ made him a cursed individual
Galatians 3:13 (KJV 1900)
13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree
The crucifixion made just be counted among criminals and offenders.
Jesus was the ultimate offender yet being free from sin
He took on the offenses of humanity even those on the cross on either side of him.
We were there with him on the cross
The Gospel places us at the Historical Crucifixion
Galatians 2:20 (KJV 1900)
20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.The more we appropriate God into our lives the more progress we make on the road of Christian godliness and holiness.
Romans 6:11 KJV 1900
Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
The only way to achieve mortification is through inner recollection. The soul must meditate on Jesus Christ and so cease to concentrate on anything external and be consumed with the inner spiritual life and drawing close to God.
The more we appropriate God into our lives the more progress we make on the road of Christian godliness and holiness.
Jeanne Guyon
Genesis 15:6 (KJV 1900)
6 And he believed in the Lord; and he counted it to him for righteousness.
