I Am Thirsty

V 28
Jesus knowing there was one thing left to do to fulfill scripture
said I am thirsty
displaying His humanity after the loss of blood
after the whippings
after the nails driven in
after hanging on the cross for hours says I’m thirsty
why did He say that?
why not just die right there and end the agony
because as soon as they put the sponge with vinegar to His lips He said it is finished and gave up his Spirit
V 29-30
because there was one more Prophecy to be fulfilled
Psalm 69:21 LSB
They also gave me gall for my food And for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

The betrayal by a familiar friend (Ps. 41:9),
the forsaking of the disciples through being offended at him (Ps. 31:11),
the false accusation (Ps. 35:11),
the silence before his judges (Isa. 53:7),
the being proven guiltless (Isa. 53:9),
the numbering of him with the transgressors (Isa. 53:12),
the being crucified (Ps. 22:16),
the mockery of the spectators (Ps. 109:25),
the taunt of non-deliverance (Ps. 22:7, 8),
the gambling for his garments (Ps. 22:18),
the prayer for his enemies (Isa. 53:12),
the being forsaken of God (Ps. 22:1),
the thirsting (Ps. 69:21),
the yielding of his spirit into the hands of the Father (Ps. 31:5),
the bones not broken (Ps. 34:20),
the burial in a rich man’s tomb (Isa. 53:9)
These are some of the few of the prophecies that was written 1000s of years prior to the crucifixion
Jesus has to make sure that all are fulfilled perfectly

Finished, The Fathers Will

John 6:38 LSB
“For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.
all of the healings, casting out of demons
feeding the people
teaching and preparing the disciples
living a sinless life
bring glory to the Father
fulfilling the mission of being the second Adam
anything and everything Jesus did was because it was the Fathers will
Jesus was in submission to the Father
Even though Jesus is part of the Godhead
He submits to the Fathers will
it was the Fathers will for the son to be given as a sacrifice for sin
and now all of the requirements are finished.
I thirst is the last one
they gave Jesus vinegar to drink
it is finished
And He voluntarily died

The Price Is Paid

“It is finished” to the the people of the time of Jesus itt means
"It is finished!" is one word in the Greek text—tetelestai. The word was a common one and was used by merchants to mean "The price is all paid!" Shepherds and priests used it when they found a perfect sheep, ready for sacrifice; and Christ died as the perfect lamb of God. Servants, when their work was completed, would use this word when reporting to their masters. Christ, the obedient Servant, had finished the work the Father gave Him to do. Christ willingly and deliberately gave up His life; He laid down His life for His friends. (Wiersbe, W. W. Wiersbe's Expository Outlines on the New Testament. Wheaton, Ill.: Victor Books)
the blood of Jesus paid the price in full
Mark 10:45 LSB
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
Hebrews 9:11–12 LSB
But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things to come, He entered through the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this creation, and not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He entered the holy places once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.
Galatians 4:4–7 LSB
But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God.
It is finished,
the payment has been made
our ransom has been bought
it is finished
the Fathers will has been accomplished
it is finished
all of the prophecies have been fulfilled concerning the cross
Jesus said It is finished, then He died for sin.
