Faith and Works

Read Matthew 14:22-36
Is there a unifying theme to this passage?
Faith seems to be the overriding thrust
Sin is also discussed, and it’s detrimental effect on faith
Matthew 14:31 NASB95
Immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and took hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”
This passage comes after Jesus fed 5000 people, plus families
He now had many crowds swarming Him. What was His response? Why? What is the lesson for us?
As He walked across the sea, His disciples became frightened when they saw Him. Why would they have been frightened? Should they have been frightened?
Matthew 14:27 “But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.”” (I am statement)
Deuteronomy 29:4 ““Yet to this day the Lord has not given you a heart to know, nor eyes to see, nor ears to hear.”
After Jesus commanded, Peter started well on the water, but then began to sink. Why?
Jumping to Jesus question - why did they doubt? Was this a reasonable response to their fear? How might they have responded?

‘You have not yet considered the greatness of the weight of sin’. - Anselm

The traditions of men

Read Matthew 15:1-14
Matthew 15:3 NASB95
And He answered and said to them, “Why do you yourselves transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?
At this point, Jesus has now drawn the attention of the Pharisees. Probably because of the miracle of feeding the 5000. This delegation would have come from Jerusalem to see what He was up to, over 100 miles
Were the Pharisees friendly toward Jesus? Was their question hostile? Leading?
Jesus answers their question with a question. What is the message He is sending? They are trying to impose the traditions of men
He refuses to accept the terms of their challenge
He accuses them
He points out their hypocrisy
He points out their lack of love and mercy
He condemns them for substituting the traditions of men for the Word of God
Matthew 15:11 ““It is not what enters into the mouth that defiles the man, but what proceeds out of the mouth, this defiles the man.””
Matthew 15:14 ““Let them alone; they are blind guides of the blind. And if a blind man guides a blind man, both will fall into a pit.””

Man’s depravity

Matthew 15:16–17 NASB95
Jesus said, “Are you still lacking in understanding also? “Do you not understand that everything that goes into the mouth passes into the stomach, and is eliminated?
The heart is desperately wicked
Matthew 15:19 ““For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders.”
Our sin is endemic to our flesh - we cannot blame the environment for our sinful thoughts or actions
Read Matthew 15:32-39
Matthew 15:34 NASB95
And Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven, and a few small fish.”
Had this happened before?
What has changed since the last time? (now the Jews are the primary audience, along with the Pharisees)
