TEXT: LUKE 23:44-49 | JESUS CRUCIFIXION WEEK TIMELINE

Introduction

Explanation: As we prepare for this Sunday to celebrate the resurrection, we must first look back at the passion week of Jesus.
Where did He go, what did He experience
There is some important ground work to lay as we come to the day of Jesus Crucifixion to understand when He was probably crucified.

I. The Jewish Calendar is different from Ours

Explanation: In the Jewish Calendar, a day actually begins at Sun down, or around 6:00pm
Genesis 1:5
Genesis 1:5 KJV 1900
5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
According to that calendar, the 6:00 pm would actually be the start of Thursday, and Friday would begin at 6pm tomorrow night.
Jesus even acknowledged this in John 11:9
John 11:9 KJV 1900
9 Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.

II. The Passion Week

Friday 6pm - Saturday 6pm
Saturday during the day was when Jesus was anointed by Mary with the perfume
John 12:1-8
John 12:1–8 KJV 1900
1 Then Jesus six days before the passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead. 2 There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him. 3 Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment. 4 Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, which should betray him, 5 Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor? 6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein. 7 Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this. 8 For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always.
Saturday 6pm - Sunday 6pm
Sunday during the day, Jesus makes the triumphal entry - Palm Sunday
John 12:12-13
John 12:12–13 KJV 1900
12 On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13 Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.
Sunday 6pm - Monday 6pm
Sometime on Monday the chief priests and scribes are seeking an opportunity to kill Jesus
Matthew 26:1-5
Matthew 26:1–5 KJV 1900
1 And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said unto his disciples, 2 Ye know that after two days is the feast of the passover, and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified. 3 Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, 4 And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill him. 5 But they said, Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar among the people.
Monday 6pm - Tuesday 6pm
Sometime during Monday-Wednesday Jesus and the disciples:
See the withered fig tree
Jesus overthrows the money changers (Could have happened on Sunday)
Jesus teaches His disciples a load of stuff in Matthew 21:12-25:46
Tuesday 6pm - Wednesday 6pm
Wednesday 6pm - Thursday 6pm
Wednesday Evening Jesus has the passover with His disciples
Luke 22:1
Luke 22:1 KJV 1900
1 Now the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover.
Luke 22:7-8
Luke 22:7–8 KJV 1900
7 Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed. 8 And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the passover, that we may eat.
It’s at the passover Jesus calls out Judas, and then goes on to teach John 13-18
After the meal, the disciples make their way to the garden of Gethsemane where Jesus prays
He is betrayed by Judas, probably sometime early Thursday morning
Jesus is taken first to Annas and then Caiaphas the high priest
John 18:12-14
John 18:12–14 KJV 1900
12 Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him, 13 And led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year. 14 Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.
John 18:19-24
John 18:19–24 KJV 1900
19 The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine. 20 Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing. 21 Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said. 22 And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so? 23 Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me? 24 Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.
Sometime around 6am Thursday morning, Jesus is led to Pilot
Luke 23:1-4
Luke 23:1–4 KJV 1900
1 And the whole multitude of them arose, and led him unto Pilate. 2 And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King. 3 And Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answered him and said, Thou sayest it. 4 Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man.
Pilot then sends Jesus to Herod around 7am
Luke 23:7-12
Luke 23:7–12 KJV 1900
7 And as soon as he knew that he belonged unto Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem at that time. 8 And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him. 9 Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing. 10 And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused him. 11 And Herod with his men of war set him at nought, and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate. 12 And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together: for before they were at enmity between themselves.
Around 8am Jesus is sent back to Pilot where Pilot scourges Jesus and sentences Him to crucifixion
Luke 23:13-25
Luke 23:13–25 KJV 1900
13 And Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people, 14 Said unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that perverteth the people: and, behold, I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him: 15 No, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him; and, lo, nothing worthy of death is done unto him. 16 I will therefore chastise him, and release him. 17 (For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast.) 18 And they cried out all at once, saying, Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas: 19 (Who for a certain sedition made in the city, and for murder, was cast into prison.) 20 Pilate therefore, willing to release Jesus, spake again to them. 21 But they cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. 22 And he said unto them the third time, Why, what evil hath he done? I have found no cause of death in him: I will therefore chastise him, and let him go. 23 And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed. 24 And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required. 25 And he released unto them him that for sedition and murder was cast into prison, whom they had desired; but he delivered Jesus to their will.
It was at 9am that Jesus was nailed to the cross
Mark 15:25
Mark 15:25 KJV 1900
25 And it was the third hour, and they crucified him.
Jesus hung on the cross and was railed against by everyone
At 12pm the sun turned to darkness and the darkness remained until 3pm
Mark 15:33
Mark 15:33 KJV 1900
33 And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.
At 3pm Jesus speaks His final Words
Luke 23:44-49
Luke 23:44–49 KJV 1900
44 And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. 45 And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst. 46 And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost. 47 Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man. 48 And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, smote their breasts, and returned. 49 And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things.
John’s Gospel tell us He cried out it is finished and gave up the ghost
Immediately the temple veil was rent in twain
There was an earthquake
And the centurion looked up and said, truly this was the son of God
Shortly after they took His body from off the cross and His body was buried before the start of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which was a Sabbath, a day of rest
Mark 15:42-47
Mark 15:42–47 KJV 1900
42 And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath, 43 Joseph of Arimathaea, an honourable counseller, which also waited for the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly unto Pilate, and craved the body of Jesus. 44 And Pilate marvelled if he were already dead: and calling unto him the centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead. 45 And when he knew it of the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph. 46 And he bought fine linen, and took him down, and wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was hewn out of a rock, and rolled a stone unto the door of the sepulchre. 47 And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses beheld where he was laid.
Being laid in the grave on Thursday before 6pm constituted the first day in the grave
Thursday 6pm - Friday 6pm
This Friday was the Feast of Unleavened bread - A Sabbath Day
Thursday night was the first night, with Friday being the 2nd day
Friday 6pm - Saturday 6pm
That Friday Night through Saturday was the Regular Jewish Sabbath day
Friday night was the 2nd night, and that Saturday was the 3rd day
Saturday 6pm - Sunday 6pm
Finally Saturday night after 6pm would have fulfilled the 3 days and 3 nights in the earth
That Sunday morning was the first day of the week.
We know that very early in the morning Mary and Mary came to the grave
Mark 16:1-2
Mark 16:1–2 KJV 1900
1 And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him. 2 And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun.
They found the stone rolled away and angel who gave them the good news
Matthew 28:5-7
Matthew 28:5–7 KJV 1900
5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. 6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. 7 And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.

Application

Tonight, join me in your heart as we see our Savior nailed to that cross.
Watch as the precious drops of blood flow down from his head where the crown of thorns pierces His head
See the the precious blood as it flows from his torn back
Look at that precious blood as it steams down from those pierced hands and feet.
And look into the suffering eyes of the Savior that loves you so much He is giving His life for you.
And hear the words of 2 Corinthians 5:21
2 Corinthians 5:21
2 Corinthians 5:21 KJV 1900
21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
Friend, Jesus did all of that so that you can have the hope of eternal life.
Titus 3:5 KJV 1900
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
Ephesians 2:8–9 KJV 1900
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Friend, if you have never accepted Christ as your Savior, I want you to know that He did die for you… but you have to receive the payment He paid for your sins.
Romans 6:23 KJV 1900
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
You don’t receive Christ by your good works
You don’t receive Him by taking communion as we will do here shortly.
You receive Christ by putting your faith and trust in Him
Romans 10:9–10 KJV 1900
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
If you have never done that before, you can make that decision right now!
As we finish our service this evening we want to take the Lord’s table.
This is an opportunity to reflect back on that sacrifice that Jesus made for our sins.
There are some that would teach that the bread and the cup literally become the body and blood of Jesus, but that couldn’t have been possible when Jesus instituted this on the night before His death.
Jesus hadn’t yet shed His blood or broken His body.
No Paul clarifies what this time is in 1 Corinthians 11:24-26
1 Corinthians 11:24–26 KJV 1900
And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.
It is for remembrance… to “shew” or demonstrate the sacrifice that Christ made.
The bread represents the broken body of Christ.
The great sacrifice and suffering that He went through for you and me.
The cup represents the precious blood Jesus shed for us.
It is through the shedding of His blood that we have the forgiveness of our sins.
This time is a time for those who have accepted Christ as Savior.
There is nothing about this bread or juice that will save you from your sins, that is a decision you have to make with the Lord.
If you haven’t accepted Christ as your Savior, I would encourage you to do one of two things:
Don’t take the Lord’s table.
Paul gives a warning in 1 Corinthians 11:27-29
1 Corinthians 11:27–29 KJV 1900
Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.
Paul makes it very clear, to take of the Lord’s table if you aren’t saved, believing that it saves you, is to take away from the sacrifice of Christ, and to keep yourself in condemnation.
So either don’t take it… or Accept Christ as your Savior right now!
Pray right where you are seated.
