On Good Friday, the church revisits the final hour of Jesus' earthly ministry, when the Son of God hangs on the cross for the world's sins. After suffering a sinner's death, Jesus' corpse is laid in the empty tomb. The signs all point to the reality of what took place: God-made flesh has indeed died, and we are left all alone.

What did you expect to see on road to Golgotha?
A Roman governor ordering an innocent man to bear his cross?
Pharisees and Sadducees shaking their first demanding the removal of Christ’s Kingly description?
A band of Roman soldiers casting stones in hopes of possessing Christ’s tunic?
A piety party of weeping women and an known disciple gazing at the suspended Christ?
The man on the cross dying and confessing “It is finished?”
Another Roman soldier piercing the side of Christ and blood and water spilling out?
Two religious men fetching the corpse of Jesus and wrapping it with fine myrrh and aloes?
Not one could imagine what would happen on Good Friday!
But I tell you what I saw on the road that leads to Golgotha and ends in a sinking grave.
I saw a man who lived an example of love: “Greater love than this no man has, than to lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13).
I saw a man who choose obedience to the Father: “For just as by the disobedience of one man, namely, Adam, many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one man, many were made righteous” (Romans 5:19).
I saw a man who willing bore my sins upon the cross (The Passover Lamb). As John the baptist said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”
I saw the Word which was erased from the pages of history.
I saw the Light of the world flicker out until darkness consumed the sky.
I saw the Life come to an end and was buried in a cold tomb.
I saw God die on Good Friday.

Before Christ gave us his life on our behalf, he told his disciples in the upper room what he was intending to do for the sake of those he loved.
Matthew 26:26–29 ESV
26 Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” 27 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, 28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”
Let’s pray and remember the death of Jesus Christ.
