On the Night

On the night Jesus was betrayed many things happened.
Passover Meal [Luke22:7-13]
Earnestly desired [14-16]
He washed their feet and
identified his betrayer
And the disciples, so in tune with the moment
argued over who was the greatest of them 22:24-30
So Jesus talks about who is the greatest among them
Only he defined the greatest as the servant of all.
which he soon would be.
Then he told Peter he would deny Jesus three times that night
which Peter couldn’t imagine.
Jesus gave the Disciples a new commandment,
John 13:34–35 NIV
34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
And Jesus takes two items from the passover meal, the
bread and the
wine
Instituted communion as a ceremony of remembrance of Him
we should remember that He did for us and
what he made possible
He died for us
he made our salvation possible because he paid the price
we couldn’t pay,
atoning for our sins by His death on the cross
and rising again, on the third day.
John records much more of what Jesus had to say that night then any other of the gospel writers
Jesus said
John 14:6 NIV
6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit to help us
He said he is the vine and we are the branches, so we/they need to stay connected to the vine
unless we want to wither away as a follower of Christ.
He told them they would be sad for a while but then be filled with Joy
John 16:16 NIV
16 Jesus went on to say, “In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.”
And Jesus prayed that the Father would Glorify the Son to Glorify back the Father.
John 17:1–5 NIV
1 After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. 2 For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. 3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. 4 I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.
Jesus isn’t holding anything back now!
Then He prays for all his disciples. he said
John 17:20 NIV
20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message,
and so on.
Meanwhile what is Judas doing
He is betraying his Lord and Master.

Semi Private prayer

Jesus takes the group to the garden of Gethsemane
He takes Peter, James and John a little farther on and asks them to watch with Him
then he goes a little further and prays by himself
Luke 22:44 NIV
44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.
Three times he asked Peter, James and John to watch with Him and 3 times they fell asleep
And 3 times Jesus prayed.
Then Judas came with many men with swords and clubs.
Fighting broke out but
Jesus put a stop to it. he said
Matthew 26:52–54 NIV
52 “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. 53 Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? 54 But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?”

Jesus Ordeal begins

They take Jesus to Annas house,
he’s interrogated and abused
then to Caiaphas house and the Sanhedrin
Then to Pilate
Herod Antipas and
back to Pilate
Why didn’t he talk or
why did he say so little,
they all wondered but
it was the Fathers will that he be crucified,
if he had caused a Touched by an angle, moment where he glowed like at the transfiguration
with Moses and Elijah appearing,
they might have been convinced
who he was and not sent him to Pilate to be crucified
If Jesus had asked the Father for help, how many angels did he say would be sent?
more than 12,000.
Jesus death on the cross was a willing sacrifice.
And now we will stick from summary to looking very specifically at Jesus death and Resurrection
It begins with taunts and mockings
Luke 23:32–35 NIV
32 Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed. 33 When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. 34 Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up his clothes by casting lots. 35 The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.”
The rulers taunt

He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.

That was not a hopeful, come on Jesus save yourself is ironic because
if He had saved Himself, then
he could not save the rest of us.
Luke 23:36–38 NIV
36 The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar 37 and said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.” 38 There was a written notice above him, which read: this is the king of the jews.
They had no idea what Jesus, the king of the Jews could have done, or what would have been done for Him if he just thought the words.
Luke 23:39 NIV
39 One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”
Reminds me how popular it is to cut down Jesus and Christians today
Luke 23:40–43 NIV
40 But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? 41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.” 42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” 43 Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
Both of these men were convicted criminals,
one proud and rude,
the other repentant.
What does Jesus say will happen to the second man
He is going to be with Jesus in paradise.
Luke 23:44–24:12 NIV
44 It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, 45 for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. 46 Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last. 47 The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.” 48 When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts and went away. 49 But all those who knew him, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things. 50 Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council, a good and upright man, 51 who had not consented to their decision and action. He came from the Judean town of Arimathea, and he himself was waiting for the kingdom of God. 52 Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body. 53 Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen cloth and placed it in a tomb cut in the rock, one in which no one had yet been laid. 54 It was Preparation Day, and the Sabbath was about to begin. 55 The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed Joseph and saw the tomb and how his body was laid in it. 56 Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment. 1 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. 2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. 5 In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? 6 He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: 7 ‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ ” 8 Then they remembered his words. 9 When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. 10 It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles. 11 But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. 12 Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.
We know from John’s gospel that John ran with Peter to the tomb and just after this moment
John 20:4–8 NIV
4 Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, 7 as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen. 8 Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed.
Amen,
John saw and Believed
He was the first male
the first man to believe which just shows how us guys are often slower then the gals to put 2 + 2 together to come up with the right answers.

Two kinds of People

The two theives represent for us the two kinds of people in the world
Those who have fallen short of the glory of God, that is sinners who haven’t received Christ as their savior and
the second group is the other thief, representing sinners who ask Jesus in their lives.
Living in community we have ideas over who is a decent sort of man or women, and
the decent people miss a lot of heartache,
and cause little heartache themselves.
Isaiah was a prophet of God
We would think he was a great Righteous man but when he had a vission of God on his throne in the temple
He cried out
Isaiah 6:5 NIV
5 “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.”
Isaiah’s best could not compare to God’s Holiness, His Standards, he needed help
He needed a touch from God
and God sent him help in the form of a red hot coal
that helped him and didn’t harm him.
Isaiah 6:6–7 NIV
6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.”
Righteous Isaiah needed help
You and I need help from God
To be the kind of man, women or child we need to be
to live the Christian life
and to be on the way to heaven as our final destination.
The bible too, talks about righteous and unrighteous people in the Old and New Testament, but in the new testament we learn that
Romans 3:23 NIV
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
and we learn that the real divide is not comparing good people to bad peaple but all people to God’s Holiness, God’s standards.
The new divide is between unsaved sinner and Saved sinner.
The question to ponder this day is
which kind of sinner are you.
And if you are one of the saved by grace kind, Praise God!
Have you been growing in your faith, or
was receiving Christ the one and only high point
in your walk with Christ.
The choice is yours,
just remember in death your reward or consequence
WILL BE ETERNAL.
Choose wisely.
Thank you for your attention today, let’s sing again
